I don't get how Sarfraz Nawaz taking a 9-fer in Australia in the fourth innings, including a spell of 7-1, to get an overseas win somehow ranks number 76? It should be in the top five.

He did it against one of the poorest batting lineups ever fielded by Australia.

I only do innings analysis, not spells.

Thanks for the requests!

I'm currently working on a new version of the ratings. I'm changing the method of rating the opposition. Previously I rated the opposition bowlers and batsmen by their ICC rating at the end of each series. But I realize this has some disadvantages, especially how a batsman or bowler who has not played for a period of time loses their rating. This effects the ODI ratings in a big way since a lot of the best players now miss JAMODIs.

So I have decided to rate each opposition batting lineup or bowling attack by their current averages at the end of the series in question. I played around with home/away to date averages but I ran into sample size LOL problems. I could do career home and away averages but the drawback of this is that players such as Richard Hadlee and Tim Southee would be rated by their career averages in the 1970s and early 2010s respectively when they were nowhere near the bowlers they would become later on. On the other hand, it would be better to rate Ravi Ashwin separately as both a home and away bowler.

Let me know what you think of this conundrum.

Anyway, the averages of the Australian top 7 at the end of the series vs. the West Indies were as follows:

SPD Smith 58.03
M Labuschagne 50.82
UT Khawaja 46.63
TM Head 43.11
C Green 32.54
AT Carey 31.12
MR Marsh 30.48

That is an average of 41.82 for the top 7.

The overall average for top 7 batsmen since 1920 is 36. So to calculate the rating of the Australian batting lineup, I do the following:

36/41.82 = 0.8608

0.8608 *-1000+1500 = 639

Joseph's performance should sit him between no.11-20 when this is all done.

India's bowling attack average was 23.01. It is the career-to-date averages of the top 5 bowlers and those who have bowled 10% of the innings, weighted by balls bowled.

Would a rolling average of say 10 games or something work better? No idea on the implications of the different methods, but feel like career averages in the above case seriously overrated marnus and underrates marsh, given recent form. Maybe that doesn't have too much of an impact and it all evens itself out, IDK.

It’s a good idea but it would involve a lot more work. I’m going it all manually at the moment.

What you are going to do about five man attacks? Say current Indian attack of Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja?

BTW do this bowling line up rate among top 10 in test cricket?

I'm not sure I understand either question.

As I wrote in an above post, the bowling attack rating is based on the career-at-completion of series bowling averages of each of tthe op 5 bowlers in the innings, based on overs bowled. In rare cases, a 6th bowler is counted if they bowl 10% of the total team overs.

As for the bowling attacks I have checked, the highest so far have been the West Indies attack that Kim Hughes scored his century against, and India's attack in the last completed test match. Both have ratings of 781.

Thanks.

So I am correct to say that this Indian line up was among the best test cricket has seen.
