DoG's Test Innings and Bowling Performances. Updates thread.

I don't think it's as easy as 5 quality bowlers, no respite, therefore credit. If you have Hadlee who bowls all day, he is worth two ********s who don't give respite. But if you are weighting things now, I think that's probably a non issue.

Anyways, when you have resolved it all, I'd love to see a ranking of strongest bowling attacks. In that top 100 Windies had 800odd with garner, holding, croft and Roberts. I'd like to see if that was ever beaten. 800 odd ranking average is ludicrous.

Pakistan's overall bowling attack ratings were let down by one subpar bowler in almost all their innings.

West Indies attacks were rated highest when Carl Hooper was not bowling loads of overs.

Here is the updated top 100. Now bowling attacks are assessed based on the ratings (at the end of the match and career peak) of the FIVE bowlers who bowled the most overs in the innings, along with any other bowlers who bowled at least 10% of the overs. In my opinion, this gives a clearer indication of the quality of bowlers that each batsmen faced. It's not perfect (that would be having access to the data for number of balls a batsmen faced from each bowler). However, it is better than the last version (average rating of the bowlers who bowled 10% or more of the innings). I like the look of the top 20 in particular.

Let me know what you think and whether there are any absent innings that you think could make the list.

Love how Kusal Perera’s knock stands tall with a rating of one more than the next best which is the biggest rating gap between any two spots (assuming that the last column is the final rating). Truly outstanding knock and was privileged to manage to catch it live

Still doesn't sit right with me that the attack Laxman faced is rated 650 while what Parera and Lara faced are rated 750. But Laxman is back in top 5 so that's good!

Just checked the scorecard of the Kim Hughes innings at #20. Never knew of this one. Looks like quite a game. Has the highest bowling attack rating in the list. Trundlers like Gomes and Richards were not used so that would have helped. The top 4 cleaned up rest of Australia.

EDIT: Did WI only manage to draw that series because Lillee broke down in the 3rd test (bowled only 8.5 overs across 2 innings)?

The percentage of overs bowled by Lillee that game wow

Still doesn't sit right with me that the attack Laxman faced is rated 650 while what Parera and Lara faced are rated 750. But Laxman is back in top 5 so that's good!
Let's look at Australia's attack from Kolkata 2001 again. These are the five members who bowled the most overs.

Warne was nowhere near his career peak. He was still in his late 90s-early 2000s slump. Kasprowicz was still relateely inexperienced, having had a stop-start career up to that point. Gillespie was also slightly off his peak. This four-man attack peaked around 2004/05 before the ashes. Of course, Mark Waugh drags down the overall rating but you could argue that Australia were a spinner light, relying too much on an out-of-form Warne.

Overall, it's a very good attack, but not up to the standards of other attacks that are rated 700+

Let's compare it to the attack that Lara faced in the 4th innings at Bridgetown in 1999. McGrath, Gillespie and Warne have similar ratings to their Kolkata 2001 versions. The difference is that MacGill was a much higher rated bowler in 1999 that Kasprowicz was in 2001. And Steve Waugh bowled much less overs than his brother did in Kolkata.

I don’t have time to go through all the innings one-by-one, so could you offer some suggestions?
Let's try these Tests:

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense that attack in Lara test should be rated higher based on contrast between ratings of Kasprowich and Macgill. It's just the influence 5th bowler has that marks down Kolkata attack a bit too much for my liking. If it was upto me I'd use top 4 bowlers only.

I mean Australia were coming off a record streak of 17 or so test wins and they had their best attack available for the Kolkata test. They had also dismissed India for mere 170 in first innings of the same test. So that was a pretty potent attack. A difference of 720 vs 750 would be closer to where I'd imagine those attacks, not 650 vs 750.

Whatever it takes!!!
It still somewhat oversells the Kusal Perera innings IMO. The bowlers of that attack had great records but were in varying degrees of slump, career end downward trajectory there. He was also doing a lot more of CBF slogging with #11 for company (a la Stokes Headingley) which was never the case with Lara's knock, which is why i rate it as the easily better knock.

This is a difficulty with your current system DoG. Still this is the best one we have for comparing innings for sure though. ?
