Cricket Web Red v Cricket Web Black at the SCG
CW Red XI: Marc71178 (C), Bugssy (vc), Ian Markus, A Massive Zebra, Supah Freak, Amit Mookerjee, Samuel Vimes (wk), Zaid Ghansar, Imran Khan Jr., Dave, Mr Ponting.
CW Black XI: Neil Pickup (C), Master Blaster (vc), Rich_2001, Jagaways, Eclipse, Ash Chaulk (wk), C Buts, BK Smith, Superkingdave, Vishnu Reddy, Chris Broadbent.
Tale of the pitch: Slowish pitch due to get slower and slower as the game progresses.
Still not quite confident of his team's brittle batting, Marc decided to field first upon winning the toss. Indeed, in a side with two genuine pace options, the consideration would be that best use of the surface would come first up. Rich_2001 quickly struck concern, however, but schooling Dave for 3 fours and 12 runs in total from his first over. Jagaways didn't find such form though, splicing to Bugssy in the gully position, a wicket for Mr Ponting.
Dave joined the party in his next over and sent Ash Chaulk and his offbail on their way. The new batsman, Eclipse skied a miscue off Khan in the 10th over and Zebra misjudged the play completely, dropping the catch at midon. Eclipse was then on 4 and would definitely make his opponents pay. Rich was batting without any such concerns though and drove the next ball to the cover fence for his 50th, 51st, 52nd and 53rd runs. Khan made amends with his wicket in his next over and then toppled Buts cheaply to break the game open once more - 84/4.
Under immense pressure of a couple of failures, BK Smith looked tentative at the crease in the opening exchanges. He then drove Bugssy for a huge six over longoff and started to gain momentum in support of Eclipse. The two batsmen anchored an impressive recovery and set up a score of 236/5 after 40 overs. In an attempt to slow the run rate, Marc entrusted the ball to his main bowlers, Dave and Mr Ponting. Dave's first spell (4-0-36-1) had featured some wonderful strokeplay from Rich, so he had a lot to prove. Bowling full and straight and keeping the pressure on the batsmen paid off and the Blacks collapsed to 265 all out, courtesy some sharp fielding from the Reds.
It was very much evident that runscoring would not be quite so easy once the ball got soft, so the Reds hoped for a good start in their chase. Things moved along quite nicely in the opening overs until a Pickup masterstroke brought Buts into the attack for the 5th over. Immediate success and Rich held a thick edge at slip off the bat of Mookerjee. Bugssy saw his partner dismissed and decided to up the tempo. He subsequently rattled off 5 fours in 12 balls but the Black seamer Broadbent held his composure and pegged the Reds back again. Alas it was the wicket of Marc71178, but a wicket nonetheless.
Not intent on slowing, Bugssy banged a short and wide first ball from Superkingdave to the fence to get to 50 (51 balls). After reaching the milestone things calmed a bit and Pickup maximized on Bugssy's new mindset with his second delivery. Bugssy was caught behind off the legspinner and the Reds set back again at 104/3. Things were soured further when Ian Markus nonchanlantly chopped on Superkingdave in the next over - 106/4. Bad turned worse and a Pickup googly had Vimes in trouble and back in the pavilion 110/5.
Ghansar and Khan tried to fight back and the latter launched Pickup for a straight six. However, Ghansar did not have the same success and was well-caught by Eclipse at cover point soon after. The enigmatic lower order batsman, Mr Ponting was victim to Broadbent, caught at third slip and the Reds continued to wilt. Dave was determined to stick around with Imran Khan Jr. and batted with good defence as well as attempts to rotate the strike. Both batsmen found it hard to time the ball and Dave struggled with placement. Khan's demise came at the hands of Pickup, who also had Dave dropped at longoff 2 overs later.
Ultimately Dave was Broadbent's 4th wicket and Buts wrapped up the tail with Zebra caught well flicking to leg slip. Disappointingly the Reds faded to another defeat in what has been a difficult opening to the season.

England A v Cricket Web Green at Cairns
CW Green XI: Age Master (C), Lord of Darkness (vc), Loony Bob, Biased Indian, Cloete, Blewy, Xavier Rose, Delkap, Nathan Hoy, Adil Dewan (wk), Rob Timewell.
Tale of the pitch: Slowish surface, but good for batting.
Smarting from their missed opportunity against the Australians, the Greens sought to rebound against England A. Back at home, the crowd was packed as per usual and CW Green was inserted upon losing the toss.
Newly announced opening partnership, Loony Bob and Biased Indian were cautious in their approach and put on 29 before they were parted. Indeed, perhaps Indian was a bit too cautious and he half-heartedly pushed an Ian Bell slower ball to short cover. Amazingly enough, Loony Bob was out in the exact same, but to a different bowler an over later. Cloete and Blewy came together and looked workmanlike in their response.
The singles came from Cloete's end and Blewy was more assertive boundary-wise. That assertiveness was ended when Kabir Ali enticed Blewy to play across the line and miss - LBW. Cloete continued to play slowly and then was very well-caught by Pieterson at backward point in an attempt to pick up the run rate. Age Master looked well-balanced in his innings but was ultimately just another start that wasn't carried on.
Now with 31.5 overs gone and just 124 runs on the board, Lord of Darkness joined Adil Dewan and the second significant rebuilding effort was staged. The partnership started slowly but surely with rotation of the stike and twos to the outfield. With time, Darkness began to see the ball better and signalled such with a pull shot into the stands off Chris Tremlett. At the 40-over mark, the score was 166/5 and the Greens were just about set to make their move.
Dewan started off by using his feet to Batty and taking a boundary and a six off the 42nd over. Kabir Ali and Dominic Cork then tightened up, but skipper Cork brought on wildcard Bell for the 48th over and the attack resurfaced. First Dewan drove straight for four and the Darkness chipped down the track and lofted a six over midwicket. In the next over, from Tremlett, Darkness followed up with another six. This time he took a full toss over the midwicket fence and reached a fantastic half-century (50 balls). Not to be left out, Adil Dewan smacked Kabir Ali back overhead for a 50th over six and got to his own half-century, from 70 balls. The Greens ended on a respectable 225/5.
Even though the recovery was impressive (an unbeaten 101-run 6th wicket partnership) 225 was always going to be difficult to defend on a good cricket pitch. The Greens started well, as Xavier Rose found Read's edge and Cloete's hands at slip in the 4th over. Unfortunately Cloete couldn't repeat the feat in the next over, and he dropped Bell off Timewell on 15. To add insult to that injury, Bell uppercut Rose for a six in the next over. He returned to drive wonderfully through the covers for consecutive boundaries off Timewell, but the bowler laughed last and yorked him the ball after.
The Greens then tightened up the bowling and the run rate dropped steadily. Nathan Hoy capitalized on the new pressure in his 2nd over, bowling Pieterson comprehensively - 69/3. No wickets would come for some time then and England A began to increase their run rate once more by taking ones and twos. Just at the point of great concern golden arm Hoy struck again to have Collingwood caught at the lone slip - 110/4. Shah played a decent cameo, but dismissal to Delkap saw the score at 124/5 and the Greens on top.
Delkap's first spell was poor at 3-0-19-0, but he returned nicely to pressure the batting more with 4-0-19-1. Xavier Rose was brought back for a quick 2-over spell, but was wicketless and Blackwell began to settle alongside Troughton. Troughton decided to get after Darkness and knocked him out of the ground and out of the attack with 10 off the 44th over. In the next over Hoy began his last spell and almost had another wicket, except that Dewan just failed to hang on to a full-stretch dive behind the stumps, off Blackwell's bat.
Blackwell didn't benefit though, dragging on Rose's first ball of the following over. The first ball to Batty was yorker-length and dug out. The batsmen set off for a run and Rose charged to field the ball, but ended up giving away 2 overthrows in the end. Batty then handed the strike to Troughton with a single and the game came to a pretty scruffy end for the Green team. A noball from Rose, lined on legstump, was clipped to the outfield for 2 runs and the next ball was cut to Cloete at point, who misfielded and allowed the winning runs.

Australia A v Cricket Web Blue at PDV Dome
CW Blue XI: Mr Mxyzptlk (C), StUEy, Craig, Jason Toogood, Nath Patrick, Broncoman, Adam, Daniel Muhaffy, Dylan Jellett (wk), Paid the Umpire, Tom Halsey.
Tale of the pitch: Consistent bounce and average pace - perfect for batting.
Once again the conditions favoured the Blues as they headed into their 3rd OD game of the season high on confidence due their recent success. Things started very well despite Mr Mxyzptlk's loss of the toss. He stated to the media afterwards that he wanted to bat first and was pleased when Blewett consented to insert his team.
Craig didn't last long and was bowled between the gate in the 3rd over. As such StUEy was met by Broncoman - a man on a mission. Broncoman entered the season with intentions of forcing his way back into pyjamas for the CW XI, but entered this particular game with some ordinary OD form on his back. Not looking to power the ball about in his natural game, Broncoman calmly worked the bowling around in a mature century stand with StUEy. In the form of his life, StUEy reached 50 from a relatively restrained 66 balls and then launched into Clarke for 2 fours and a six.
Bichel dealt him the finger though and he was out LBW. Righthander replaced righthander as Toogood took guard. He wasted no time in getting set and immediately took a liking to Clarke, as evidenced by him taking a ball into the longon seats. Inspired, Broncoman hit his 76th ball for his first boundary of his innings in the next Bichel over. He was mistumped off Hauritz's first ball of 30th over and then cut the next ball to the fence for four. Using the rule of 'if at first you don't succeed', Broncoman then went down the pitch again and this time made good contact with the Hauritz offering. The ball was last spotted heading toward Sydney.
The partnership between Broncoman and Toogood passed the century mark and then Broncoman edged Tait into Hussey's lap at slip. Hussey dropped the ball stunned and the batsman smirked. However, Broncoman, the sporting individual he is, gave Hussey a replica chance 3 balls later and that time he was made to walk. Paid the Umpire, in his first service of the season, drove delectably down the ground for a boundary first ball he saw. He then held the pose with the expectancy of none-existent flashbulbs. A couple balls later he looked for the same shot, but played too early and scooped a catch to Hogg at midon. Jellett and Toogood batted out the remainder of the innings in contrasting styles. While Jellett struggled to get the ball off the square, Toogood plumped up his half-century to an unbeaten 80 from 89 balls - 263/4.
After the innings break a very spirited Blues team took their positions. Quickly Nath Patrick had Maher pouched by Broncoman at slip and then beat Clarke with consecutive deliveries to end the 2nd over. Things looked well in hand for the Blue crew, but Clarke and Hussey counterattacked. An almost run-a-ball 93 snuck past the home side and suddenly Australia A was 102/1 and needing less than 5 runs per over. Mr M, whose first over went for 11 runs, yorked Hussey and suddenly it was game on... at least until David Hussey knocked Mxyzptlk out of the attack with figures of 5-0-34-1.
Australia A didn't seem to lose momentum with the Hussey swap and it seemed the Blues had let one slip when Michael Clarke was gifted life by Umpire off the bowling of Halsey. Clarke then had 59 and would thankfully add no more, caught at square leg in the next over - 162/3. Still, only 102 runs were needed from 132 balls and still 7 wicket in hand - the Aussies on top. That is, until Halsey had his say.
Clearly not in his best form this season, Halsey got what may be the break he needed. David Hussey drove a full toss on legstump back to the bowler and it deflected off Halsey's palms to Toogood at short cover for a spectacular dismissal. An over later Halsey delivered a topspinner to take care of Blewett and it was 181/5. Strike bowler Patrick was recalled to the crease to bring a wicket immediately. The dangerous Symonds got into a tangle and simply fended to Broncoman at backward point - 192/6. A googly from Halsey - 197/7 - then a missed full toss - 202/8. The tail fought for a few more overs but eventually the Aussies fell short by 22 runs.
