Webheads head to Mumbai
The series lost, the Cricket Web XI moves into the final Test of a series in a familiar position. Pride is the only thing left to play for, and even that seems out of grasp.
A team bruised and broken since a positive first Test showing, the XI will try to muster up some urgency with a new look team that features two major changes and an entirely different make-up. What from history can we forward to for this last Test match?
CW at Mumbai
The last time the Webheads took the field at Mumbai, it was a batting feast that was at hand. Meeting Pakistan as the guest team in the Asian Test Championships, only 28 wickets fell in the match, with 20 of them in the first innings.
Contributions of 3 wickets apiece by Corey Taylor and Rueben Verghese in the first innings and Neil Pickup in the second "limited" the Pakistanis to scores of 429 all out and 349/6 declared. In their time at the crease, all the CW batsmen chipped in, but no one stood out, as Verghese (83) and Fitzsimmons (85) were the only ones to break into the 80s amidst scores of 424 all out and 231/2.
CW's exit strategy
The CW XI has thrice won the last Test match of a series:
v South Africa - lost by 9 wickets
v West Indies - draw
v Sri Lanka - won by 7 wickets
v England - lost by 7 wickets
v Australia - draw
v New Zealand - draw
v Pakistan - lost by 28 runs
v Bangladesh - won by 6 wickets
v Sri Lanka - won by 322 runs
v South Africa - draw
The record in those matches is an overall 3 wins, 3 losses and 4 draws. Thus, half of Cricket Web's Test wins have come in the final Test of a series.
Brendon Goff's exit strategy
The much-criticized CW XI captain, Brendon Goff has a career Test average sub30, but in the final Test of a series as captain, he has an average of 47.64. This indicated a tendency to take the final available opportunities, but will the trend continue on this occasion?
