Wait a minute is this whole thing just because he won't do TV ads?
It's been brewing for a while now since Cummins made it clear that he's worried about climate change is willing to speak out publicly about it. This is just the latest trigger for every conservative to start whining about celebrities being worried about climate change, because only the morally pure get to care about climate change, apparently.

There's been a lot of vitriol directed his way for a while now because of this.

Idk anything about the Cummins thing either but literally 99% of humans are hypocrites. I’m sure Bumrah is a massive one too.
99% of humans are lots of negative things though. Hypocrisy is still allowed to be criticised. It's still a thing

What's your point though? Do you expect him not to tour or not to drive a car at all?

What if he catches a petrol powered bus? is that ok or not?

I have no beef with Cummins tbh. I'm aware you can push for a good cause while not wanting to turn your own personal life upside down. It's cleary more the governments and big businesses of the world that should pick up their act before one dude has to re climate change. I still like John Lennon's "Imagine" for example!

My point is merely I can see why perceived hypocrisy gets people's goat. Big believer in actions speak louder than words. I guess with climate change in particular, it's really hard to not be perceived as a hypocrite. But with other issues I'm less forgiving. And I guess I get triggered by the "everyone's a hypocrite so I guess I can say whatever and do whatever" logic

One issue in particular I see a lot now is people claiming to be mental health advocates while being insult happy if there's a chance for a good joke. And every insult probably leads to a victim's mental health being slightly affected

Whatever it takes!!!
@Line and Length while I agree with your point about hypocrisy, this kind of stuff and stance does help in the broader context. I can tell you one example.

In India back in 1994 or so, the sponsors of all test cricket were Director's Special, an alcohol brand, and the sponsors of all ODI cricket were Wills, a cigarette company. They were the first ones who brought big money to the BCCI and as part of the deal, they got to get most of the players to do ads for them. But the then 21 year old Sachin was approached and he categorically refused to do alcohol or cigarette ads because of the fact that he is seen as a role model by people in India. By 1997, the Government brought in regulations that made it impossible for the BCCI to have anything sponsored by these companies.

So if Cummins really feels strongly about the topic, and there is enough scientific evidence to support such a stance, then he should do something in his power towards that. I mean, I am sure Sachin still drinks socially etc. but it is one thing to do it personally as a choice, but another to basically champion it when you are in an influencing position.

It is one reason I rate Sachin very very high as a sportsperson, tbh.

Cummins is best bowler in the world.

Rabada and Bumrah are 2a & 2b. The most awesome thing is uncle Jimmy at 40 is #3.

One thing that's making this world shitter and shitter is people taking pot shots at people who want to make things better because they equate any view that's contrary to their own as hypocrisy and they can justify that opinion with a few oversimplified examples of behaviors.

I care about climate change/world population/the state of the world for my kids. I also drive a petrol car and I fly in planes. I drive a petrol car because my work requires an on call component and I work shifts and I need to be at my workplace at times within 15 mins and I am 8kms away. I ride my bike more than I used to, but sometimes I also drive cos it's wet and cold, and I'm lazy. Am I a hypocrite? By some people's metric, yes. When an electric car becomes affordable for me, I will likely buy one.

I am conscious about using less **** and making less landfill. The human population of the world has grown from 1.6 billion in 1900 to almost 8 billion now. Resources are not finite. Whether you believe in climate change or not, in the next few generations we will reach a tipping point in terms of population sustainability and resources.

So if Cummins is a "hypocrite" because of his current behaviors is largely irrelevant. Almost everyone is forced to be by the circumstances we are all in. But if he can use his profile to create some change in big energy companies to move more towards renewables and be better for future generations, isn't that a great thing? Because that's where the real change needs to happen, in big industry, which then trickles down to us and benefits us and future generations. I respect his stance far more than people just taking cheap pot shots at his (and my) hypocrisy.

it's great that (supposed) debate about who the better bowler is has reduced to bickering about the respective parties carbon emissions

a very productive use of bandwidth if ever I saw one

Like, could Cummins do more at a personal level to reduce his emissions? I'm sure he could (I honestly have no idea and I'm not particularly interested to find out). But I appreciate that he uses his very significant public platform to try and make the world better on this particular issue; and the specific thing he's done here is well-founded as a strategy for affecting change.

Driving a V8 is definitely hypocritical though. It's not quite the same as having to travel via airplanes because he could just get an electric vehicle. He's loaded.
sure but in the grand scheme of things it's a red herring - if cummins was going around slashing people's tyres for not buying a prius while himself driving around in a dodge ram or whatever sure, but you don't have to be living off the grid to be able to reasonably call out or draw attention to attempted greenwashing by a company which is the fifth (?) biggest polluter in the entire country
