Awesome result for Smeltz, should just about get me a top 20 world ranking at the end of the season I think.

BNP Paribas Masters
3rd Round (Thursday) - Paris, France (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
  • Jefferson Drake's chances of qualifying for the World Tour Finals are now firmly in his own hands after the ninth seed accounted for current world No. 8 Rasmus Olesen in straight sets. The equation is simple for Drake; win the tournament and qualify for a big payday in Flushing Meadows. The Dane looked to be showing the effects of a lengthy season and was outclassed by the super-fit Drake who has played more matches than any other player on the tour combined. His 6-4, 6-3 victory puts him in good stead for a battle against the world No. 2 after Daniel Páez Blanco crushed Tal Cohen 6-3, 6-1.
  • CWLander Randy Smeltz continues to silently mow his way through the draw as he advanced to a third Masters quarter final of the season with a 6-4, 7-6(6) win over Spain's Sergio Joaquín. Smeltz, alongside Tiago Matías who continued his stunning run through to the quarter finals with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 upset of Zoltán Varga, is one of two unseeded players into the quarters and did it easy against the Spaniard who lacked the quality strokes that earned him a win over Illya Altman in the second round. Smeltz now faces world No. 5 Darcy Cowan in the quarters who has also made it to just his third Masters quarter final of the year with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over 13th seed Miroslav Brdar. Smeltz's record at this point isn't too flash; 0-2 with losses to Sanchez Emelio (5-7, 4-6) and Radek Špidlá (1-6, 2-6).
  • An awesome second set from Sven Oxenstierna looked like making it three CWLanders into the quarters, but the fifth seed was rocked by a great reversal of form by Juan Moreno. Moreno looked a certain top ten finisher after a semi at Roland Garros and final at Wimbledon before a big slump has seen him fall out of the top ten with three first up exits in Montréal, Clowich and Shanghai and just the one title in Gstaad. After taking the first in a tiebreaker, Moreno looked to have crumbled as Oxenstierna returned to normalcy with a bagel in a second set that lasted just twenty-eight minutes. But Moreno still had some gas in the tank, and staged a dramatic fightback to secure an unlikely 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-4 win over the sixth best player in the world. He looked set for a quarter final against world No. 1 Jason Hall before compatriot Dwayne Murdoch knocked off The King in a tense third round affair 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(4).
  • In the eighth third round clash and marquee match on Court 1, sixth seed József Boros ended the fine run from Diego Hurtado 6-3, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out:
    Miroslav Brdar;
    Jason Hall;
    Rasmus Olesen;
    Sven Oxenstierna;
    Zoltán Varga.
  • Second seeds Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard put singles disappointments behind them as they surged into the quarter finals of the doubles draw with a three-set win over Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum. In an all-CWLand clash, the world's third ranked team continued some good preparation for the World Tour Finals in a week's time with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory over the third ranked team of their nation. Bowenburg and Maxum have engaged in some entertaining contests with their compatriots, but couldn't pull off the upset as Davis and Mustard advanced to a quarter final clash with Gai Kai & Lu Xun.
  • Ion Andueza & Sanchez Emelio's World Tour Finals hopes have been threatened after a disappointing 7-5, 7-6(3) loss to Brazil's Dênis Rodrígues & Roberto Santos. It is big fall for the Spaniards who were seeded one at the French Open, and they were joined by Artem Krohmal & Merab Shvelidze who also fell out of the race with a straight sets loss to Mikel Fosdike & Christian Mary. Andueza and Emelio still look likely to qualify for the finals, but will drop out if Gai and Lu claim the title in Paris.
  • The Spaniards' loss meant that the last match on Court 1 took on an all new meaning for Tal Cohen & Raz Teper as a win would guarantee the sixth seeds the final spot at Flushing Meadows. Despite dropping the first set and being forced to save two match points, the Israeli duo secured a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 win and a spot in the World Tour Finals regardless of Gai & Lu's performance from here on.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ion Andueza & Sanchez Emelio;
    Artem Krohmal &
    Merab Shvelidze.

Lima and Seoul to come.

2nd Round - Seoul, South Korea (Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • There's guaranteed to be two CWLanders in the semi finals of the Tretorn Serie+ Challenger in Seoul after the country's players continued their domination of the field in the South Korean capital. Randy Banks continued his good form in the bottom half of the draw by coming from a set down to defeat qualifier Marcuss Deane in three sets. The big-serving Deane posed another test for Banks, but fell away as the match progressed as Banks advanced 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Banks' victory earns him a well-deserved rest against the giants of serving with Matt Bre waiting in the quarters following his confident 6-3, 7-6(0) win over Knoxville, TN semi finalist Waylon Jones.
  • In the top half, Mat Mitchell is spending the most time on court out of everyone after a three hour slugfest against seventh seed Niko Ulemek. The Croat took the first set 6-4, but it was Mitchell who proved he has ice in his veins as he played inspiring tennis in the second and third set tiebreakers to secure a brilliant 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) win. Opponent Spas Delev had it easier as he eased past British qualifier Michael Posinović 6-4, 7-6(0).

  • Seeded players out: Heinz Hainisch; Niko Ulemek.
  • There was less success for CWLand in the doubles as both Matt Bre & Mat Mitchell and Randy Banks & Marcuss Deane fell. Deane and Banks, after meeting in the singles, fell in straight tiebreakers to third seeds Grigory Khuagev & Alexey Korskakov, whilst Bre and Mitchell fell in a tight three-setter against Donovan Burbach & Benjamin Turner.

  • Seeded players out: None.
Lima Challenger I (C)
2nd Round - Lima, Peru (Clay)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • A strong start for Rick Langley in Lima has been all for nought as the qualifier fell in three sets to fifth seeded Ecuadorian Néstor Moreno. Moreno dropped the first set 3-6, before fighting back ruthlessly to post a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win.

  • Seeded players out: Emelio Cobos.
  • Just the one seeded team fell in the doubles as two-time Challenger champs Juan-Pablo Serrano & Xavier Suarez fell to Aussies Rod Bosnar & Steve Cole fresh off their final in Knoxville last week.

  • Seeded players out: Juan-Pablo Serrano & Xavier Suarez.

Take that Maxum! Couldn't even beat myself and Jojo in a 3rd set tie-break. Every man and his dog have achieved that (except yourself, of course)

  • World No. 88 Spas Delev will look to finish his season on a high when he competes for a spot in the final of the Tretorn Serie+ Challenger in Seoul tomorrow. The third seed is the highest seeded player left after overcoming a tired compatriot Mat Mitchell in straight sets. Mitchell lacked the spring in his step that saw him eek out three-set wins in the first two rounds, whilst Delev was all class as he put a disappointing 11-18 ATP level record behind him to pick up a 6-2, 6-4 win. He will face Henrikk Henrikkson in the final following the Swede's come-from-behind win over Pat Hewitt, and now boasts a 10-3 record at Challenger level.
  • There is the prospect of an all-CWLand final as Matt Bre continued to quietly mow his way through the bottom half with a straight sets win over Randy Banks Banks and Bre were neck-and-neck right throughout the match, but it was Bre who had the polish in the tiebreakers as he stole a 7-6(4), 7-6(6) win over his countryman. Standing in his way of a final is Russian teen Boris Denisov who also beat a countryman; second seed Oleg Puder 7-6(4), 6-0.

  • Seeded players out: Pat Hewitt; Oleg Puder.
  • The semi finals pit all four seeded doubles pairs against each other, though Nico Hoffman & Benjamin Rabin did it the hard way as they save four match points in a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win over Donovan Burbach & Benjamin Turner.

  • Seeded players out: None.
Lima Challenger I (C)
Quarter Finals - Lima, Peru (Clay)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • In Lima, top seeded local José Navarro suffered a disappointing 3-6, 5-7 loss in the upset of the day against Austria's Martin Reiter. In the bottom half, second seed Aldo Marín also bowed out after giving up a one-set lead against Fernando Aguero of Spain.
  • In the doubles draw, top seeded Brazilian pair Marzio Claverini & Flávio Augusto Martins were humbled in straight sets by Faizal Al-Quireshi & Sunil Colaco, whilst seconds seeds John Engström & Erik Viksten also surprisingly crashed out to local wildcards Wilton Almeida & Vítor Padilla 6-4, 7-5.

  • Seeded players out: Aldo Marín; José Navarro.
  • Seeded players out: Marzio Claverini & Flávio Augusto Martins; John Engström & Erik Viksten.

Building tension and all that jazz...

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
  • World No. 21 Randy Smeltz has assured a spot in the Year End Top 20 after probably the biggest win of his season as he shocked World No. 5 Darcy Cowan in straight sets. Smeltz, after two unsuccessful quarter finals at Masters level, finally got the breakthrough he desired by smashing the inconsistent Cowan 6-4, 6-3 whose ranking seems to have only stayed where it is through the 1000 points he gained from his shock Wimbledon triumph in July. Smeltz has quietly accounted for his opposition with the loss of just one set, but saved his best tennis for the American teen who quickly lost patience with the flurry of unforced errors coming off his racquet as Smeltz stayed cool and calm in a strong win.
  • Ninth seed Jefferson Drake's chances at a singles entry at the World Tour Finals in Flushing Meadows have been flushed down the toilet as he produced an uninspiring display against World No. 2 Daniel Páez Blanco. Needing to win this tournament to snare the eighth spot, Drake was not on as a roaring Blanco continued his sensational run of form after claiming a maiden hard court title in Valencia last week. Drake will still be present in New York in the doubles draw, but would have hoped for a better showing against the Spaniard to finish the year inside the top ten. As it was, he fell 6-3, 6-2 to give Blanco a date with fellow natural clay courter Smeltz.
  • In the final singles match on Court Central, Rasmus Olesen's spot in Flushing Meadows was sealed as eleventh seed Juan Moreno became another victim on Dwayne Murdoch's hit list. Fresh off stunning the World No. 1, Murdoch continued his unlikely charge towards the semis with a 6-3, 6-4 win. The American fourteenth seed has been a poor performer outside of the Slams where he has been a regular competitor in the second week, and will now look to advance to just his second ATP final against sixth seed József Boros who finally ended the great run of Portugal's Tiago Matías 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3.

  • Seeded players out:
    Darcy Cowan;
    Jefferson Drake;
    Juan Moreno.
  • The day went from bad to worse for Drake as he and partner Martti Korpinen were ousted in the quarters of the doubles draw as wildcard entrants Mikel Fosdike & Christian Mary kept the French torch burning in a 7-6(6), 6-1 upset. Although they were on the entry list for this tournament as alternates, the French pair played attractive tennis in their win as they curbed the influence of Drake's powerful groundstrokes with some keen volleying. Korpinen looked a match at the net for the pair, but struggled at the back of the court as he was routinely attacked by the French pair. They'll face Israel's Tal Cohen & Raz Teper in the semis after the sixth seeds finally looked like producing the form that got them to the Roland Garros final with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over top seeds Hayden & Ross Onwye.
  • In the bottom half, Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard ended Gai Kai & Lu Xun's New York chances with a confident 6-2, 6-4 win. The Chinese pair looked in awesome form, but were undone by the CWLand second seeds who advanced to a second Masters Series semi final, and will look to rectify their loss in Clowich. They'll face quality singles duo Carlo Amato & Antonio Bachunelli who continued their amazing run of form with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 win over Dênis Rodrígues & Roberto Santos.

  • Seeded players out:
    Hayden Onwye &
    Ross Onwye;
    Jefferson Drake &
    Martti Korpinen
