• In what is possibly the biggest win of his career, CWLander Jarkko Maxum has come from a set down to stun former world No. 5 Zhijun Sun in three sets in a first round boilover in Bercy. The Chinese teenager has suffered a dramatic dip in form since missing much of the clay season through injury, but looked in dominant touch early as he put the qualifier to the sword to the tune of 6-2. But Maxum was not going to lie down there, and after an impressive qualifying period came back strongly to hurt Zhijun with some counter-attacking tennis that drew errors from the Chinese No. 1. Those errors hurt badly, and Zhijun dropped three service games in a row and found himself in a world of trouble at 0-2 in the third. He managed to scrape one back, but it wasn't enough to avoid a stunning result as Maxum earned a second round clash with the man he beat in qualification, Tal Cohen, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
• Randy Smeltz has overcome a brief scare in the opening set to escape with a confident 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Russia's Dmitry Orlov. The No. 1 ranked Russian looked out of answers in the first set as he slumped to 1-5, before Smeltz blew four set points and allowed him to fire back into the set and into a tiebreaker. But the CWLander held his nerve after the break, and managed to fire down two aces in the breaker to capture the first 7-6. Orlov again started the second set poorly, and there was no coming back this time as Smeltz clung on to a straight sets win to advance to a big second round clash with twelfth seed Henry Charles of Great Britain.
• Completing the hat trick for the powerful nation on Court 1 was Jojo Mustard who survived a spirited display from Marc Carretero to beat the highly rated Spanish youngster in three sets. Mustard failed to convert either of his match points in the second set, and would be forgiven for feeling slightly nervous as the qualifier got the small crowd involved with some aggressive play in the tiebreaker to send the match to a decider. But it was all smoke and no fire as Mustard collected himself and a confidence-boosting 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 win to book a horror second round clash with Jason Hall.
• On Sunday, the up-and-down season of Danijel Micic continued as he was stunned in three sets by French wildcard Jean-Christophe Genghini. After beating the likes of Charles, Blanco and Pascaul en route to the final in Shanghai, the Serb was outplayed by the world No. 66 who made the most of the cavalcade of errors to escape 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In the only other match on the Sunday, Swede Björn Donaldson celebrated his qualification by advancing to the second round 7-6(3), 6-4.
• In perhaps the most hotly-anticipated match on Monday, Carlo Amato put an end to the season for Almen Benaglio in a fizzer 6-3, 6-1. The Indian Wells finalist has done little since his great run at the first ever Masters event, and the Italian star bounced back brilliantly from his thumping in the Vienna final to pick up a straight sets win.

• Vladimir Gryzlov may be contemplating his doubles future, but would be forgiven for leaning against continuing on as he and Björn Donaldson were thumped in straight sets by singles pairing Diego Hurtado & Juan Moreno. Gryzlov, who tomorrow plays his final singles match in the city he once made a European Open final in, and his Swedish partner never got going against two top thirty singles players as they crashed and burned 6-4, 6-0.
• The other match with two singles players saw Wayne Boyd & Jason Hall fall in three sets to János & Zoltán Varga. Boyd, whose normal partner Morgan Carter has announced that he will now focus on his singles career, hoped to earn some much-needed points alongside the world No. 1, but couldn't do enough as the Hungarian brothers secured a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win.

• Jefferson Drake will face his biggest test if he wants World Tour Finals qualification against Rasmus Olesen on Thursday. Drake had little trouble against Li Wang, whilst Olesen came from a set down to escape with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) win against local hope Patrick Pascaul.
• Heath Davis came from a set down to beat János Varga 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to a second round showdown with Daniel Páez Blanco; the second seed who is riding high following a big triumph in Valencia.
• World No. 30 Jojo Mustard hoped to put up a fight against top seed Jason Hall in their second round clash, but looked outmatched in the important moments as Hall won through 6-2, 6-3. He faces compatriot Dwayne Murdoch next.
• Finally, Wayne Boyd played spoil sport as the curtain fell on Vladimir Gryzlov's career 6-1, 7-6(0). The 40-year old exited a singles arena for the last time after emotionally thanking the French crowd (where he made his only Grand Slam finals) and was congratulated by his fellow players.

• Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum will face Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard after a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win over Manfried Manz & Walter Schiller.
• It was a horror day for Marc Carretero & Sergio Joaquín as they were thrashed 6-0, 6-0 by Gai Kai & Lu Xun.

• It was 5/5 for CWLand as they staged their own invasion of South Korea led by a big win from Randy Banks. The youngster came through a tough three-set affair against fourth seed Ivars Emsis in a great display of serve neutralising. Although the trademark serve of the Latvian wasn't quite on, Banks produced perhaps his best performance yet on the Challenger circuit to secure a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 upset. He will face fellow countryman Marcuss Deane who celebrated his debut on hard courts as he smashed Matti Räihä 6-1, 6-4. Deane looked happy to be off of the clay and indoors as he eased past the Fin to secure a big second round matchup.
• In the same half Matt Bre continued his good form of late with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Tu Haifeng, and will now have a big chance at a quarter final after sixth seed Adam Murray was beaten by Knoxville semi finalist Waylon Jones. Bre looked good against the Chinese Taipei player; and although he could not convert one of his four match points at 5-4 in the second, he eventually prevailed in straight sets.
• In the top half, Mat Mitchell for the second week running defeated Brit Scott Whitehouse in three sets. In a remarkably similar match, Mitchell showed it was new continent, same result as he played confidently to surge to a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-0 win over the left-hander. Third seed Spas Delev looked the most impressive as he advanced to the second round by defeating Adul Doungtong 6-2, 6-4. His win hopefully will begin a turnaround after a horror late-season stretch before the CWLand Championships later this month.

• Whilst five CWLanders prevailed in Seoul, Rick Langley was the only CWLander present in South America as he came from a set down to beat Massimo Prodi. It was a horrible start for Langley as he dropped the opener 1-6, but he had little trouble coming back and gaining control of the match as he broke service early in the second. He did the same in the third, and that was enough as he set up a second round clash with fifth seed Néstor Moreno 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

• Randy Smeltz is in a fantastic position to go one step further than Shanghai and make the quarter finals of the Masters event in Paris after making twelfth seed Henry Charles one of four seeds to fall on a big Wednesday at Bercy. The world No. 21 pulled through in three sets in the day's opening match on Court Central; bouncing back from dropping serve late in the second to punish Charles for his lack of penetration in the third. One criticism of the Brit has been his lack of authoritativeness in his groundstrokes, and Smeltz took advantage of that in the decider as he controlled play to walk away with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win. He looked likely to face eighth seed Illya Altman in the third round after the Ukrainian took the first set against Sergio Joaquín 6-3. But after exiting first round in Valencia last week and having a double bagel alongside Marc Carretero in the doubles, Joaquín made an unlikely turnaround to steal a sensational 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) boilover.
• Fifth seed Sven Oxenstierna had little trouble in advancing on Court 1 as he overcame a rusty start to account for Wayne Boyd in straight sets. The Ox was broken early to trail 1-3 before he came back to take the first set with a late break of serve. That proved the catalyst for the World No. 6 to lift and take the second set inside of thirty minutes to set up a third round clash with Juan Moreno 7-5, 6-0 after the Argentine's struggle against Tom Vollan.
• Heath Davis could not join three other CWLanders in the third round as he was easily beaten by a red-hot Daniel Páez Blanco. After claiming his first title on hard courts last week, Blanco looked confident against the big-serving CWLander as he produced some of his best tennis in the straight sets clinic. Davis was broken four times by one of the game's best returners, and didn't have the ability to fire back on the Spaniard's serve as he crashed out 6-3, 6-3.
• Blanco will face Israeli lucky loser Tal Cohen who sensationally bounced back from a loss in qualifying to smash Jarkko Maxum in straight sets. On Saturday, an upbeat Maxum took a confident 6-3, 6-4 win over Cohen and then backed that up on Monday with a huge win over China's Zhijun Sun. But today he lacked that flare and confidence, and was eaten up by the occasion as Cohen eased to a 6-3, 6-2 win to advance to a third round matchup against the second best player in the world.
• Altman's untimely loss wasn't the only upset in a big day of tennis as first tenth seed Rick Henson, who had claimed back-to-back titles in Vienna and Basel, saw his Year End Finals hopes disappear in a stunning three set loss to Diego Hurtado. The Colombian was always going to be a massive threat to the World No. 11, but produced some of his most awesome tennis to come from a set down to shock the American 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. But if Joaquín's win over Illya Altman was going to make a claim for upset of the day, nothing prepared anyone for the final match on Court Central as World No. 3 and one of the favourites Radek Špidlá was shocked by unfashionable Portuguese player Tiago Matías. Matías, who boasts an uninspiring record of 13-11 on hard courts this season, looked like cannon-fodder early as Špidlá took the first set 6-2. But he rallied to produce perhaps the biggest upset of the year in Masters tennis to escape with a shocking 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
• Losses to Illya Altman and Rick Henson meant that József Boros' 6-1, 7-6(6) win over Björn Donaldson earlier in the day sealed his spot at Flushing Meadows.

• World No. 5 team Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen were on the winners list in the doubles, but it could very well have been completely different but for an awesome run in the first set tiebreaker. Trailing 1-6, the CWLanders took seven points in a row against János & Zoltán Varga to snatch the opening set 7-6. Had the Hungarian pair converted one of five set points, they would have taken the match as they steamrolled the CWLanders 6-2 in the second, but it wasn't to be as the fourth seeds clung on in the match tiebreaker to secure a big 7-6(6), 2-6, 11-9 win.
• The last time Antonio & Sandro Bachunelli met on opposite sides of the net, it was the older brother Sandro & Hicham Hadir who won a thriller 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 against Antonio & Vladimir Gryzlov. This time, however, Antonio teamed up with Carlo Amato and it was the all-Italian duo that secured a win; coming from a set down to advance 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Elsewhere, fifth seeds Andrej Konc & Evgeniy Maximov suffered a big loss to Gai Kai & Lu Xun to jeopardise their World Tour Finals chances; the Chinese looking in ominous touch with a 6-2, 7-5.
