The stage looks set for a finals showdown between fourth seed Danijel Micic and fifth seed Brett Read in Pörtschach as the pair advanced to the semifinals of the Hypo Group Tennis International as the last remaining seeds. The thus far brave Pierre L'Estrange was unable to continue his good form into the quarterfinals; the Frenchman showing that he probably isn't at one hundred per cent fitness after a 6-4, 6-0 loss to the CWLander Read. Despite defeating two CWLanders in a row, L'Estrange was unable to make it a hat trick as he was outclassed by his higher ranked opponent. In his best performance in weeks, Read gave L'Estrange the run around as the Frenchman attempts to become match fit ahead of next week's open. Read faces off against Aussie Toby Brookes in the bottom half semifinal after the world number 78 proved too good for Kim Vollan. Vollan, who defeated second seed Henry Charles in the first round, struggled to impose himself on the contest - his serve faltering en route to a 7-6(4), 6-4 defeat.

In the other semifinal, Viktor Vuriak surprised all with a straight sets boilover against top seed Rasmus Olesen. The world number 77 took the first set in a canter, but it took over an hour to decide the second set which went to a tiebreaker. After 26 long points, Vuriak finally sealed a draining victory to set up a semifinal clash with Micic. Despite the win, the Ukrainian will go into the semis as an underdog following Micic's utter decimation of local hope Zbiginiew Boniek. The unpredictable Serb won in under an hour 6-0, 6-1.

Seeds Out: 1-Rasmus Olesen (DEN).

USA advance to final, CWLand/Croatia to be decided in doubles

The United States have again proven why they are the toughest country in the world to beat as they sewed up a spot in this weekend's World Team Cup final in Düsseldorf. The US took an unassailable 2-0 lead over hosts Germany to seal the tie, and regardless of the final result of the China-Hungary clash they will still be here on the weekend. World number one Jason Hall's scratchy form continued as he dropped the first set to Becker Haas. But whilst Haas stayed competitive in the second set, he was unable to get the better of the man who will be the top seed at next week's French Open - Hall pulling off a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory. In the second rubber, Morgan Carter wrapped up the tie and continued his undefeated streak with a straight sets thrashing of Gunther Heug. Heug, who criticised Carter for not defeating any one of note, was taught a tennis lesson as Carter continued his ominous touch en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win. China and Hungary will play off for second spot in the Blue Group as their tie sits level at one point each. Zoltan Varga was forced to come from a set down to continue Li Wang's horror run - he took the second two sets in tiebreakers to pull off a third-straight win 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(5) to give Hungary the first point. But Imre Medgyessy was unable to pull off his first victory as he was comprehensively beaten by big-serving Zhenyu Fok.

The Red Group's finalist will come down to the doubles rubber between CWLand and Croatia as a stalemate ensued at the end of the first day. Miroslav Brdar ended Sven Oxenstierna's big run of victories with a straight sets victory to hand the undefeated Croats an early leads. The Ox, who had previously defeated Radivoj Daneu and Sanchez Emelio in straight sets, was brought crashing down to earth by a rampant Brdar who finds himself hitting his stride at just the right time. The world number seven took just over an hour and a half to seal a 6-3, 6-3 victory to put the pressure right on Jamee Hancianu. And young Hancianu didn't disappoint as he continued his sensational form with a three-set win over Nilikar Midid. In a tight contest, Hancianu edged past the big Croat to level the scores at a point each with a marathon 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3 win. Hancianu would have hoped to have sealed the match in straight sets, though, after at one stage leading 7-6, 5-1. But Midid managed to fire back into the contest with six games on the trot to head into the decider in rampaging form. Hancianu, however, had enough about him to hold off the Croatian number two in a win which will hold him in good stead for a matchup with Morgan Carter should CWLand win the tie. Said tie will be decided in the doubles between two teams in vastly contrasting forms; the Croatian pair of Brdar and Adem Tadić are undefeated, whilst CWLand pair Jojo Mustard and Heath Davis have lost both matches in the third set tiebreakers. In the other tie, Spain and Serbia are level at 1-1 in their quest for respect. Radivoj Daneu sealed his first win of the week against Sanchez Emelio, whilst Sergio Joaquin levelled the scores against Dusko Milosevic.

Stakhanov ashamed. Lost family heirloom. What now give grandchildren?
A total and fanatical devotion to the dialectic and the eventual overthrow of capitalism!

Perhaps now Vladimir has learnt the perils of indulging in capitalist fantasies. He will emerge from this humiliation a humbler, better servant of the revolution, tennis' own Rakhmetev. Alex de Wet marches on to Paris.

MATCHDAY SIX
USA, CWLand to meet in weekend decider

The small nation of CWLand will face off against the United States in the final of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship in Düsseldorf after a sensational deciding doubles rubber against Croatia's Miroslav Brdar and Adem Tadić. The CWLand pair, Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard, had yet to win a match this tournament, and nothing looked like changing as, for the third time, they dropped the first set. Looking to capitalise on yesterday's win over CWLand's number one, Brdar produced an early break of service to have Croatia on the verge of the final. But the CWLand pair ensured the match would head to a match tiebreaker as they fought back to level the match at one set each. The match tiebreaker has been the bane of CWLand's existance thus far; but, in a marathon encounter, Davis and Mustard picked up the biggest possible win in a 6-7(7), 6-4, 13-11 affair. Meanwhile, Team USA racked up their second consecutive 3-0 victory as doubles pair Wayne Boyd and Morgan Carter took a straight sets win over the German team. Becker Haas and Alex Peters managed to stick with them in the first set to send it to a tiebreaker, before being bagelled in both the breaker and the second set to hand the US a victory.

Elsewhere, Hungary and Spain picked up consolation victories in their respective groups. The Varga Brothers proved far too good for the Chinese pair, Li Ming-Wang and Li Wang; whilst Spain picked up their first point of the tournament with a come-from-behind victory over Serbia.

In a massive shock, it will not be the fourth and fifth seeds facing off in the final in Pörtschach, rather it will be the world number 78 and 79 doing battle for the Hypo Group Tennis International crown. Ukraine's Viktor Vuriak and Australian Toby Brookes both came from a set down to defeat Danijel Micic and Brett Read respectively. First up was Brookes' big upset of fifth seed Read - despite dropping the first set 3-6, the Aussie came storming back into the match to level match at a set each. The pair have similar styles, and in a battle of baseline play it was Brookes who emerged victorious in a massive boost to his Australian Open hopes as he took a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Brookes' appearance in the final marks the second time an Australian has appeared in an International Series final, and the world number 78 will hope his final turns out better than Dubai did for David Champion.

In the other semi, raging hot Danijel Micic was unable to overcome Viktor Vuriak as the Ukrainian's giant killing run continued. Having already defeated the world number one in the quarters, Vuriak started sluggishly against a fired up Micic. But after taking the first set, Micic tightened up considerably and looked a shadow of the player who smashed Zbiginiew Boniek in the quarters. The fourth seed drew the ire of the crowd as he disputed a call with the linesman late in the second set; the powerful Serb losing four points on the trot as Vuriak levelled the match at a set each. The decider went down in a similar way as the two traded bombs from the back of the court. But it was the volatile Serb who cracked first to hand Vuriak three match points - the world number 79 advancing to his first career final with a massive 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Seeds Out: 4-Danijel Micic (SRB); 5-Brett Read (CWL).

Maxum and Trumper-Smith set to battle for wildcard

Jarko Maxum and Lawrence Trumper-Smith will face off on Sunday for a wildcard into the Roland Garros main draw after picking up convincing semifinal victories. As part of a reciprocal arrangement with the French Tennis Federation, one CWLand player will receive entry to the French Open. Trumper-Smith dropped the first set to Joe Walker in the first semifinal in a tiebreaker, before storming home with twelve games on the trot to seal a 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-0 win. The world number 298 overcame an early stumble before rampaging home in his best performance yet. In the other semi, Maxum proved too good for Alex de Wet and heads into the final as favourite to earn the wildcard. Maxum, a clay court specialist, has matched it with some of the best players in the world this season and had little trouble in stitching up a 6-2, 7-5 victory against the unpredictable de Wet.

It's going to be a tough encounter against the States, and we'll have to be at our best. Great game from Heath, was super tense going deep into the tiebreaker.

Dissapointed to drop a set, though thankfully the hangover and after effects of viagra had cleared by the 2nd set.

Hall falters again, but Carter levels the score for USA

CWLand's Sven Oxenstierna has continued his big run ahead of next week's French Open after defeating a top three player for the second time this week; this time world number one Jason Hall in the final of the first ever ARAG ATP World Team Championship. In a blockbuster day of tennis in Düsseldorf, CWLand and the United States ended level at one point each heading into the doubles rubber after two entertaining matches. First on court was the Oxenstierna-Hall match; and with Hall coming off two straight wins, many expected the United States to take an early lead. But looking to fight back from his straight sets loss to Miroslav Brdar in the tie against Croatia, Oxenstierna started brightly as he controlled play against a somewhat average Hall. In a completely uncharacteristic passage, Hall dropped the first set with a double fault, and warning bells were sounding in the American camp. Hall, however, wasn't going to play dead, and came out more aggressively in the second set to break a rather meek service game from The Ox first up. Ahead 3-2 and serving, Hall looked like running away with the set until the CWLand number one fought back to level the scores. It was in vain, though, as Hall prevailed in the tiebreaker 7-2 to level the match at a set each. But it was Oxenstierna's day, and not even a late loss of service could stop his charge after he ran to a 4-0 lead in the decider. Hall avoided the bagel with a late comeback, but ultimately fell to an Oxenstierna who was playing perhaps his best tennis this season - the CWLander sealing a 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 upset.

Jamee Hancianu and Morgan Carter have yet to lose this week, and for one man that would have to change. It was 19-year old Hancianu who was on the end of a straight sets defeat in a disappointing end to an otherwise promising week; Carter continuing to stake his claim for a good showing in next week's Grand Slam as he continues to improve on clay. In a tight contest, Hancianu was unable to hold onto his serve at cruicial times; a problem which plagued him late in both sets and ultimately resulted in his downfall. Despite showing flashes of the form that helped him to three wins this week, he was overawed by the biggest crowd of the week as he capitulated in the ninth game of the first set - dropping the game to love. It was a similar story in the second set when down 15-40 on service, Hancianu was unable to claw his way back into the game to hand Carter a match-winning 6-5 lead. Carter would go on to seal the leveller 6-4, 7-5

The title will therefore be decided tomorrow in the doubles showdown, presumably between the teams of Carter and Wayne Boyd, and Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard. Carter and Boyd managed to bounce back from their defeat to the Vargas earlier in the week to post back-to-back victories against the teams from China and Germany. Davis and Mustard, however, managed to finally shake off their match tiebreaker blues against Croatia yesterday, but will find themselves against probably the form pair of the competition in tomorrow's blockbuster clash.

Gone down to the wire. Hopefully the coach has faith in the developing doubles partnership of Davis & Mustard.
