Pörtschach (Round of 32) - May 18-24 Season I
The Hypo Group Tennis International
Round of 32 - Pörtschach
Draw - Seeds
Draw - Top Half
Draw - Bottom Half
The Hypo Group Tennis International organisers have suffered a blow as two of the top three drawcards of the clay court event in Pörtschach fell in a chaotic first round of action. Joining second seed
Henry Charles on the scrapheap was
Randy Smeltz; the CWLander suffering a big blow to his French Open aspirations just one week out from the pinacle of the clay court season. The third seed fell in three sets to injury prone Frenchman
Pierre L'Estrange despite heading into the deciding set with a torrent of momentum behind him. L'Estrange, in one of his first appearances since he badly injured his back earlier in the season, looked to find form on clay ahead of his home Open; and stuck with the in form CWLander right throughout the first set. Neither man was intent on giving up serve, but it was in the tiebreaker that the 24-year old Frenchman drew first blood as he surged ahead early. But the 28-year old Smeltz was not going to lay down without a fight, and, in yet another scrappy fightback, he took early breaks of service against the French serve to take an unassailable 4-0 lead. With the match level at one set each, Smeltz should have continued his form into the decider - but L'Estrange pulled off a remarkable comeback against the gritty CWLander to seal an emotional
7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3 victory.
Smeltz's loss sees L'Estrange book a second round clash with another CWLander,
Martti Korpinen, after the qualifier picked up his first victory on the pro tour against fellow qualifier
Johan Ortiz. After what was an impressive qualifying period, Korpinen continued his good form into the main draw as he looked to level his 0-1 International Series record. In a tight contest, the determined Korpinen showed the guts that many in CWLand have showed throughout this season as the import picked up vital breaks of service at the most opportune times. He will, however, need to step up his game against L'Estrange who has been ranked as high as 16 in the world. Nevertheless, the
7-5, 6-4 victory will fill him with an abundance of confidence.
In the same section, fifth seed
Brett Read continued his late resurgance of form in the clay season after a three-set win over Brazil's
Roberto Santos. In an even start to the match, both men traded sets thanks to late breaks of service. But it was Read who produced the expected victory against the experience Brazilian to set up a
6-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory in impressive style. The fifth seed now faces Ukraine's
Roman Dorogan in the second round after he produced a straight sets win against veteran Japanese player
Ninteh Doh. Doh's good friend,
Rob Bowenurb. has struggled at times this season on clay, but seemed to take heart from his semifinal appearance in Lugano last week as he also picked up a three set win against
Václav Zeman. The highly rated Czech youngster has yet to produce his best tennis this season, but at times looked a class above Bowenburg. But the German-born Lob managed to fight back from a 2-6 deficit in the second set to turn the match on its head in the third; running away a
6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victor. Bowenburg, though, has his work cut out for him in the second round as the unpredictable fourth seed,
Danijel Micic, advanced following a straight sets thumping of Cypriot
Takis Georgilas.
Seeds Out: 2-Henry Charles (USA); 3-Randy Smeltz (CWL); 7-Dmitry Orlov (RUS); 8-Diego Hurtado (COL).
Draw opens for Read as no. 2 seed falls
In an amazing first round of tennis, the bottom half of the tournament opened wide for fifth seed
Brett Read as he was left as the only seed remaining after shocking upsets in Pörtschach. Joining third seed
Randy Smeltz and seventh seed
Dmitry Orlov on the sidelines was second seed
Henry Charles; the Brit a shock three-set loser to Norway's
Kim Vollan. The match started as most would expect; Charles looking too good for a the younger Vollan brother who has had severe trouble on the clay courts this season. But the two meter giant was not going to simply lay down for the second seed; he threw caution to the wind as he blasted thirteen second set aces en route to a tiebreak victory. A stunned Charles could only watch on in the decider as Vollan ran rampant to seal a dramatic
2-6, 7-6(6), 6-1 victory to set up a second round clash with local wildcard
Martin Reiter.
