World Team Cup: Düsseldorf (Second Ties) - May 18-24 Season I
MATCHDAY THREE
Red Group to be decided in Croatia-CWLand showdown
The finalist for the Red Group will be decided on the third set of fixtures as both
CWLand and
Croatia extended their records to 2-0. Regardless of the results in the doubles rubber tomorrow, it will be the winner of the Thursday-Friday fixture who will advance to the final of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. Following their opening 3-0 victory over Serbia, Croatia wrapped up yet another fixture on the first day - this time against
Spain. World number seven Miroslav Brdar was forced to come back from a set down in the opening tie to account for Sanchez Emelio in three sets to hand Croatia the early break, but it was Nilikar Midid who brought it home with a straight sets thrashing of Ion Andueza. Andueza, who replaced Sergio Joaquin as the second singles competitor, never really got going in his showdown with the Croat; his
6-4, 6-4 defeat only made worse by the fact that Spain's winning doubles outfit from the first tie has now been split up. Much like they did on Sunday, CWLand also wrapped up their tie against
Serbia with a pair of straight sets victories. Sven Oxenstierna continues to shine against highly rated opposition; he proved too good for world number three Radivoj Daneu to the tune of
6-4, 7-6(6). Jamee Hancianu then continued his re-emergence after he took a
6-4, 6-4 win over Savo Petkoviä to ensure the pressure will again be off for the team of Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard in tomorrow's doubles rubber.
In the Blue Group, it is all square in one tie heading into tomorrow's doubles rubbers.
Hungary's Zoltan Varga continued his roaring form by taking a three sets victory over
Germany's Becker Haas; Varga, who accounted for world number one Jason Hall on Sunday, continues to look the goods ahead of the French Open next week. But the Hungarians will need to seriously consider the composition of their side as Imre Medgyessy fell in straight sets for the second consecutive time, leaving the Varga brothers the task of sealing the tie for Team Hungary. In the
USA-
China showdown, Jason Hall's return to form has handed the tie to the United States as the world number one and Morgan Carter both recorded victories. Hall, who hasn't won a singles match since his win in Estoril a fortnight ago, produced some fine tennis to dispatch Li Wang in straight sets, whilst Carter proved too good for the powerful Zhenyu Fok as he produced his second win in as many matches.

MATCHDAY FOUR
Blue Group race hots up in four-way tie
Düsseldorf is no closer to finding out the finalist in the Blue Group as they were when the tournament started on Sunday, as a four-way tie emerged in the lead up to Thursday and Friday's deciding fixtures. The Group will be decided on matches and sets after the
United States and home team
Germany both recorded their first victories of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. The USA ensured they would climb to the top of the group for now after Wayne Boyd and Morgan Carter combined to seal the tie 3-0 against Chinese team Li Ming Wang and Li Wang; but the crowd were more intent on cheering on Becker Haas and Alex Peters to a surprise upset of János and Zoltan Varga. Haas and Peters lost the first set 3-6, and it looked to be business as usual as they slumped to 0-2 in the second. However the packed Düsseldorf crowd got right behind the new look German pair who rallied to claim the second set 7-5 and then a match tiebreaker 10-3. Following the second matches, the US sit on top of the table with a match record of 4-2 (8-4); closely followed by Germany 3-3 (8-8),
Hungary 3-3 (6-8) and
China 2-4 (4-10).
In two doubles matches that meant absolutely nothing in terms of results,
Croatia stitched up a second straight 3-0 victory whilst the
CWLand doubles pair against bottled it in the match tiebreaker. Miroslav Brdar and Adem Tadić were clinical for the Croats in their victory over new look Spanish pair Sanchez Emelio and Javier Villaneuva; Croatia maintaining their undefeated streak with a
6-4, 6-1 win over the pair from
Spain. CWLand pair Jojo Mustard and Heath Davis weren't as clinical, though, as they slumped to a second straight defeat. No-name Serbian pair Dusko Milosevic and Savo Petkoviä took the first set in tight circumstances, before the Davis-Mustard pairing rallied to bagel the Serbs in a dominant second set. But where most would expect the side to carry on their dominant touch into the match tiebreaker, they would not as Team
Serbia picked up a consolation
7-5, 0-6, 10-8 victory.
WHAT THEY SAID -
"It isn't ideal, but we aren't at the stage of the competition where we can afford to experiment" -
CWLand captain James Nixon rejects claims that doubles pairing Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard will be prematurely split.
"First stop Düsseldorf; next stop the world!" - Alex Peters has slightly inflated hopes after
Germany's 2-1 win over
Hungary. How about you focus on beating the USA first, Alex?
"It is very frustrating, but it shows where I really am in the world. It is better to find out now than at the French Open" - A dejected Li Wang of
China finds a positive in the wake of two straight set defeats.
"He has played some very good tennis so far, I hear. But he's not beaten any one good, so I'm not too worried" - Gunther Heug remains unfazed ahead of his match against the unbeaten Morgan Carter. Does he forget that he lost to Zhenyu Fok on Sunday?
"It is out of our hands, now, and I can't help but thinking we let the team down" - Zoltan Varga reflects on he and his brother's loss which made qualifying for the final very hard for
Hungary.
"I think it was a team effort" - Winless Imre Medgyessy wryly adds to Varga's comments.
