Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Hoping for a good run at Zagreb to build on my relative success in the Aussie Open. The surface should suit me and after a couple of tough 5 setters in Melbourne, I should be match fit and raring to go.

The only CWLander in the qualifying draw for Jo'burg was Sven Svensson, and his run didn't last long as he faced the tough task of second seeded South African Oliver Thursfield. On the indoor courts in Johannesburg, Svensson put up a decent fight against the world number 146, but was unable to build up a significant head of steam. In the opening set, the pair went toe-to-toe for the first four games, but Svensson dropped serve in the fifth game of the set and would then fall behind 4-2. After edging the first set, the second seeded hometown favourite looked untroubled in the second set as he cruised to a convincing 6-4 6-3 win. Svensson would miss out on a wildcard, whilst Thursfield would advance to the main draw with a 4-6 6-1 6-3 win in his qualifying final against Maarten Bak of Denmark.

Qualifiers: Michael De Kinsele (ITA); 5-Savo Petkoviä (FIN); WC-Adam May (RSA); 2-Oliver Thursfield
Wildcards: Robert Isaacs (RSA); Lucky Mazibuko (RSA); Bogdan Maurer (ROU).

In Chile, CWLand's Yngve Fjermestad also failed to advance past the first round of qualifiers on clay despite fighting bravely against Holland's Thomas Velten. In his first match for CWLand, Fjermestad looked an even match for the unseeded Dutchman as he claimed a very even first set in a tiebreaker. But the man known as the "One Shot Wonder" began to falter on service as Velten began to expose his lacklustre backhand and pillaged him at the net. The weakness in Fjermestad's game resulted in an impressive second set from Velten to level the match at a set each."OSW" fought back in the third as his serving prowess returned to the fore, but he was unable to take a substantial amount of points off Velten's serve and conceded the match with a double fault - Velten advancing 6(4)-7 6-3 7-6(6).

Qualifiers: 1-Jefferson Quezada (CHL); 4-József Boros (HUN); Antonio Bachunelli (ITA); 7-Emelio Cobos (ARG).
Wildcards: Patricio Sánchez (CHL); Renato Varas (CHL); Tom Velten (NED).

In Zagreb, CWLander secured their only qualifying spot into a tournament as Billy Spleen made it through an impressive run of three-set victories. Made to work hard in all three matches, Spleen first began with an impressive come-from-behind victory over fourth seeded Latvian Ivars Emsis - Spleen taking a 2-6 6-1 6-4 win. Again, Spleen was made to come back from a set down in the second round as he defeated unseeded Czech Pavel Polak in three sets. But his toughest match came in the final against Chinese seventh seed Kai Gai - for the third straight time the CWLand journeyman went down in the first set. But where on any other day he might've been eliminated in a qualifying final, Spleen rallied to take claim the next two sets in thrilling tiebreakers to advance to the main draw 3-6 7-6(2) 7-6(6) where he will face fifth seeded Almen Benaglio of Switzerland.

Fellow CWLander Raghav Suryadevara didn't have nearly as much time on court as his compatriot as he bombed out in the opening round. Pitted against Kazhakstan's Ilja Nesterov, Suryadevara was unable to make too much of an impact as Nesterov barely raised a sweat. After sticking close but ultimately faltering in the first set 4-6, Suryadevara lost confidence and quickly fell behind 0-3. From there it was all academic for Nesterov as he sealed a 6-4 6-3 win.

Qualifiers: Victor Zsasz (SUI); 3-Ivan Cesljar (CRO); Billy Spleen (CWL); 2-Andrej Konc (SVK).
Wildcards: Stipo Vučemilović (CRO); Ivan Genov (BUL); Pavel Polak (CZE).

Mustard was in the Auckland Open on page four, and in the AO qualifiers. I assume you'll be involved in one of Costa do Sauipe, Rotterdam, or San Jose. :)

CWLand Matches

Johannesburg
  • Rob "The Lob" Bowenburg faces a difficult first round clash against sixth seed Václav Zeman of Hungary. If somehow makes it through to the quarterfinals, he faces a tough prospect in the form of Zhijun Sun of China.
  • Eighth seed Roy Daniels comes up against Luxemborg's Oliver Engel - a victory there could see him in a quarterfinal clash with third seed Ross Onwye.
  • Unseeded Brett Read should get through his first round clash with wildcard Bogdan Maurer, but might face a tougher round of 16 opponent in the form of seventh seed Oneil Stewart.

Vina del Mar
  • Jamee Hancianu faces a tough first round clash with sixth seeded Sanchez Emelio. If all goes to plan for the CWLander, he faces a looming clash in the quarterfinal against top seed Daniel Páez Blanco.
  • Second seed Sven Oxenstierna faces an interesting clash in the round of 32 against qualifier Emelio Cobos of Argentina. If he makes it through to the quarterfinals, he could face seventh seed Eric Henson of the USA.

Zagreb
  • Mat Mitchell faces a difficult round of 32 clash against eighth seed Becker Haas, and it won't get any easier as a possible clash in the quarters looms against Nilikar Midid or even the unseeded Danijel Micic.
  • Seventh seed Heath Davis faces a round of 32 clash against local qualifier Ivan Cesljar. Expected victories could set up a quarterfinal clash with Heinz Hainisch (or even Jefferson Drake).
  • If the latter clash is to take place, Jefferson Drake will have to overcome fourth seed Heinz Hainisch of Austria, and then either Mark Harmel or Vladimir Gryzlov. A tough ask for the youngster.
  • For qualifier Billy Spleen to advance, he will have to defeat fifth seed Almen Benaglio. It gets tougher as János Varga is on the same quarter of the draw.
