Australian Open
Day Fourteen - Final - Melbourne

Finals

World No.1 Jason Hall has surprised no one en route to the first ever Grand Slam title - lifting the Australian Open cup high above his head after a come-from-behind victory against Czech sixth seed Radek Špidla. The big-serving Czech ace managed to take the first set off the favourite, but struggled to really impose himself on the match from thereon as Hall continued his undefeated streak in the Open era. It was a hot day at Melbourne Park, and the tennis action was even hotter as the big-serving Špidla caused all sorts of trouble early with a number of well-placed serves to Hall's backhand side. The world no.1 looked somewhat off his game as he was broken early in the set and eventually handed it to the sixth seed on a platter with an unforced error.

But in typical Jason Hall style, he fought back into the match by racing to a 4-0 lead in the second set - giving the lethargic Špidla a tennis lesson as he failed to really find his range again. But the Czech ace managed to find his form again in the third set as he pushed Hall right to the wire, but his dependency on his own serve saw him pose no threat to Hall on his own service games - the crowd merely waiting for Špidla to misfire with his right-handed thunderbolts. The mistakes finally came for Špidla in the fourteenth and final game of the third set as he failed to win a point on his own service (which included two double faults) allowing the top seed to edge ahead two-sets to one.

Again Špidla managed to stay close to the favourite in the fourth set, but became more and more predictable on his service as Hall was able to give him the run around. It took him just under two hours to seal the championship with a fantastic backhand winner - lifting the trophy with a superb 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-4 victory.

Seeds Out: 6-Radek Špidla.

EDIT: I'll update the rankings when I can.

Wow. Bloody good stuff already. Not quite sure how I've jumped that high already, but I'm not gonna complain.

I believe Murphy Su'a is a good benchmark by which we should all measure our lives, and Drake's pretty close to being the 3rd CWLander to be better than Big Murph.

Next tournament:

Movistar Open, Vina del Mar, Chile
Prize Money (Winner): $73,500
Ranking Points (Winner): 175
Rumoured to be Competing: Daniel Páez Blanco, Pierre L'Estrange, Sergio Joaquin, Tiago Matias, Sanchez Emelio

I'll take up to the first eight who put their names forth - remembering those who sign up for this one don't get preference for the next group of three tournaments at Marseille, Delray Beach, and Costa Do Sauipe. (Is anyone able to think of a better way to regulate how many tournaments people play?)

Roy Daniels will not take part in this tournament.

Injury Updates
Sam Cunningham (NZL) has suffered a broken foot (92 days) and will be out of action until April 28.
Karl King (NZL) has suffered a broken arm (52 days) and will be out of action until March 19.
Toby Brookes (AUS) has torn his knee ligaments (100 days) and will be out of action until May 6.
Denis Inomov (UZB) has broken his hand (16 days) and will be out of action until February 11.
Martin Reiter (AUT) has cut his hand (8 days) and will be out of action until February 3.

What ranking points & money are available for each of these tournaments??

A decent field. However, I think the Ox need to take advantage of these clay courts. Signs up for Vina del Mar.

Not able to think of a decent way to regulate tournaments - except the IRL excuse - fitness (you get deducted some points for each set you play, and gain some points by resting)

Is the Joburg event still going ahead?

Bowenburg loves the indoor hardcourts and thinks Joburg would be the perfect tournament to crack into the top 100.

I reckon we could set a maximum number of tournaments like 20 perhaps?

Oh dear, working off the wrong calendar it seems.

Give me a bit to try and work out the points for the Joburg tournament, and I'll open up signups for Zagreb, Joburg and Vina del Mar.

You can sign up for any of the three now if you wish.
