World No.1 Jason Hall has surprised no one en route to the first ever Grand Slam title - lifting the Australian Open cup high above his head after a come-from-behind victory against Czech sixth seed Radek Špidla. The big-serving Czech ace managed to take the first set off the favourite, but struggled to really impose himself on the match from thereon as Hall continued his undefeated streak in the Open era. It was a hot day at Melbourne Park, and the tennis action was even hotter as the big-serving Špidla caused all sorts of trouble early with a number of well-placed serves to Hall's backhand side. The world no.1 looked somewhat off his game as he was broken early in the set and eventually handed it to the sixth seed on a platter with an unforced error.
But in typical Jason Hall style, he fought back into the match by racing to a 4-0 lead in the second set - giving the lethargic Špidla a tennis lesson as he failed to really find his range again. But the Czech ace managed to find his form again in the third set as he pushed Hall right to the wire, but his dependency on his own serve saw him pose no threat to Hall on his own service games - the crowd merely waiting for Špidla to misfire with his right-handed thunderbolts. The mistakes finally came for Špidla in the fourteenth and final game of the third set as he failed to win a point on his own service (which included two double faults) allowing the top seed to edge ahead two-sets to one.
Again Špidla managed to stay close to the favourite in the fourth set, but became more and more predictable on his service as Hall was able to give him the run around. It took him just under two hours to seal the championship with a fantastic backhand winner - lifting the trophy with a superb 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-4 victory.
Seeds Out: 6-Radek Špidla.
EDIT: I'll update the rankings when I can.
