World Team Cup: Düsseldorf (First Ties) - May 18-24 Season I

MATCHDAY ONE
Hall, Daneu downed in shock losses

Day one of the Season I ARAG ATP World Team Championship has seen two major upsets as world number one Jason Hall and world number three Radivoj Daneu both suffered big losses in their singles rubbers. Hall, who was a late entrant for Team USA after a second round exit in Madrid, started poorly as his Roland Garros preparation has gone from bad to worse - the world number one going down to Hungary's Zoltan Varga in straight sets. Varga's impressive 6-2, 7-6(1) victory ensures that the tie will be decided in the doubles ranking tomorrow after Morgan Carter clawed back a point for the US with a straight sets win over Imre Medgyessy. Daneu's loss to Miroslav Brdar was less of a shock, as the world number seven ran away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory for Team Croatia. The Croat stitched up the tie against second seeded Serbia; Nilikar Midid proving too good for Savo Petkoviä, as his 6-3, 7-5 victory handed the Croats an unassailable 2-0 lead.

CWLand also started their campaign off well as Sven Oxenstierna and Jamee Hancianu stitched up their rubber against an understrengthed Spanish side. Minus world number two Daniel Páez Blanco, Spain failed to take a set off the strong CWLand outfit - Oxenstierna starting off proceedings with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sanchez Emelio. Hancianu had it even easier as he massacred Sergio Joaquin in straight sets; the nineteen year old running away a 6-0, 6-3 victor in an impressive lead up to next week's French Open. In the blue group, China-Germany will be decided in the doubles rubber tomorrow after Becker Haas started strongly for the home side with a 7-6(0), 6-3 win over Li Wang. Gunther Heug looked like continuing the home side's form, but the Düsseldorf crowd was left disappointed as Zhenyu Fok charged back to claim a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

MATCHDAY TWO
Vargas seal Hungarian triumph

Hungarian brothers Zoltan Varga and János Varga have handed Hungary a big victory over tournament favourites United States after a straight sets win in today's doubles rubber. Fresh off a confidence boosting win over the world number one, Zoltan look buoyed by the prospect of playing with his brother as the pair dominated the early going. The US pair, Morgan Carter and Wayne Boyd, at times had no answers for their opponents - their losses leaving the US with a massive task on their hands to make it to the final. Hungary were joined in the Blue Group winners circle by China who came from behind to defeat hosts Germany in three sets. After dropping the first set 2-6, Li Ming-Wang and Li Wang were forced to fight hard against the inexperienced local pair to level the match at a set each. In a tight match tiebreaker, the visitors disappointed the Düsseldorf crowd for the second time in as many days to seal a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 win.

The outcomes of the Red Group were already decided on day one, but it was Croatia who surged to the top of the table after they completed a 3-0 win over Serbia. Miroslav Brdar and Adem Tadić were on paper the better team than the makeshift Serbian pair of Dusko Milosevic and Savo Petkoviä, but were made to work hard to complete the whitewash. In a long match tiebreaker, the Croats finally sealed a dramatic 3-6, 7-6(6), 12-10 marathon to surge to the top of the Red Group. CWLand pair Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard struggled to cohesively work together, but still took Spain's Sanchez Emelio and Ion Andueza to a match tiebreaker. Their contrasting styles didn't quite gel on clay, but the confidence both men have picked up after recent singles successes helped them to scrape the second set. They weren't able to beat the experienced Spanish pair, losing the dead rubber 7-5, 4-6, 10-4.

WHAT THEY SAID -
"No, I mean, I've got at least two more matches to find some form ahead of next week and I think I can do it. There's no reason I can't win the French Open" - USA's Jason Hall on his loss to Zoltan Varga

"We choked. There's no other way of saying it" - Becker Haas after Germany gave up a 1-0 lead, and two one-set leads in their tie against China

"We were very, very good, and they were not so good" - Croatia's Nilikar Midid on his team's 3-0 rout of Serbia

"It was like watching that movie about the elephant and the mouse" - Spain's Sergio Joaquin was less than impressed with the teamwork between CWLand doubles pair Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard

Rather pleased with beating Emelio. OK, he's "only" 19th, but still the type of player I've been going out to recently. Serbia and Croatia are arguably stronger than Spain though.

Looking forward to Read vs Vollan in a Pörtschach semi. 'mon lads.

Not quite sure I like the cut of Sergio's jib. And what movie is he on about anyway?

Still, Monsignori Mustard and myself were taking it easy due to the fact WE WERE ALREADY THROUGH, JOAQUIN YOU ****.

Spain should trounce Serbia. They've only got Daneu who will play singles - Micic is their second ranked player and is in Pörtschach.

And yep, a welcome return to form for Ox.

Victory is always sweet when I finish on top of Zemen.

Micic the second ranked Serb who SBI has just mentioned is my next opponent and he will be tough, I will probably tank the match if I lose an early service break or two just to conserve energy for Paris.

Pörtschach (Round of 16) - May 18-24 Season I

The Hypo Group Tennis International
Round of 16 - Pörtschach

Draw - Seeds
Draw - Top Half
Draw - Bottom Half

Fifth seed Brett Read will face off with Frenchman Pierre L'Estrange in the quarterfinals of the Hypo Group Tennis International in Pörtschach, following a straight sets win over Ukraine's Roman Dorogan. Read, who was the only remaining seed in the bottom half of the draw following the first round, struggled early against the Ukrainian before finally finding form when on the brink of a first set defeat. Down 2-5, Read rallied to break service and find himself back in the set - the fifth seed finding form late in the first to sneak the first set. After not looking like holding service for the first six games, Read didn't look like dropping service for the rest of the match as he won eleven of the final twelve games to romp into the quarterfinals. His opponent could so easily have been fellow CWLander Marrti Korpinen after the qualifier went agonisingly close to taking his second International Series victory. In a three set marathon, Korpinen was caught short in two tiebreakers against a ginger L'Estrange. In his first tournament back since suffering a slipped disc in January, L'Estrange produced an extraordinarily gutsy performance to seal a 7-6(1), 4-6, 7-6(1) victory.

In the top half, Rob Bowenburg was easily accounted for by fourth seed Danijel Micic in their second round clash. Micic was at his volatile best as he engaged in a fiery showdown with the chair umpire on just the fourth point of the match. Despite the early fireworks, the world number 26 proved too classy on clay for The Lob as he ran away with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Seeds Out: 6-Jason Bradley (USA).

Surely gambling is against Stakhanovite principals?

No way is de Wet losing to a Communist. His people already lost the Chimurenga to the reds. I fear this might get personal for him. Not that most things aren't personal to him- angry, angry young man.

Think that's the first time Mustard has played doubles, it was a tough game, but unfortunately we went down. Mustard really felt that he and Davis were finding a combination towards the 2nd set, it was disappointing to lose the tiebreaker, but we'll be better off for the experience.

MATCHDAY THREE
Red Group to be decided in Croatia-CWLand showdown

The finalist for the Red Group will be decided on the third set of fixtures as both CWLand and Croatia extended their records to 2-0. Regardless of the results in the doubles rubber tomorrow, it will be the winner of the Thursday-Friday fixture who will advance to the final of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. Following their opening 3-0 victory over Serbia, Croatia wrapped up yet another fixture on the first day - this time against Spain. World number seven Miroslav Brdar was forced to come back from a set down in the opening tie to account for Sanchez Emelio in three sets to hand Croatia the early break, but it was Nilikar Midid who brought it home with a straight sets thrashing of Ion Andueza. Andueza, who replaced Sergio Joaquin as the second singles competitor, never really got going in his showdown with the Croat; his 6-4, 6-4 defeat only made worse by the fact that Spain's winning doubles outfit from the first tie has now been split up. Much like they did on Sunday, CWLand also wrapped up their tie against Serbia with a pair of straight sets victories. Sven Oxenstierna continues to shine against highly rated opposition; he proved too good for world number three Radivoj Daneu to the tune of 6-4, 7-6(6). Jamee Hancianu then continued his re-emergence after he took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Savo Petkoviä to ensure the pressure will again be off for the team of Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard in tomorrow's doubles rubber.

In the Blue Group, it is all square in one tie heading into tomorrow's doubles rubbers. Hungary's Zoltan Varga continued his roaring form by taking a three sets victory over Germany's Becker Haas; Varga, who accounted for world number one Jason Hall on Sunday, continues to look the goods ahead of the French Open next week. But the Hungarians will need to seriously consider the composition of their side as Imre Medgyessy fell in straight sets for the second consecutive time, leaving the Varga brothers the task of sealing the tie for Team Hungary. In the USA-China showdown, Jason Hall's return to form has handed the tie to the United States as the world number one and Morgan Carter both recorded victories. Hall, who hasn't won a singles match since his win in Estoril a fortnight ago, produced some fine tennis to dispatch Li Wang in straight sets, whilst Carter proved too good for the powerful Zhenyu Fok as he produced his second win in as many matches.

Blue Group

Hungary 1 - 1 Germany
Zoltan Varga (HUN) def. Becker Haas (GER), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
Gunther Heug (GER) def. Imre Medgyessy (HUN), 6-2, 7-6(3)

United States 2 - 0 China
Jason Hall (USA) def. Li Wang (CHN), 6-2, 6-4
Morgan Carter (USA) def. Zhenyu Fok (CHN), 6-1, 6-2

Red Group

Croatia 2 - 0 Spain
Miroslav Brdar (CRO) def. Sanchez Emelio (ESP), 2-6, 6-2, 6-4
Nilikar Midid (CRO) def. Ion Andueza (ESP), 6-4, 6-4

Serbia 0 - 2 CWLand
Sven Oxenstierna (CWL) def. Radivoj Daneu (SRB), 6-4, 7-6(6)
Jamee Hancianu (CWL) def. Savo Petkoviä (SRB), 6-4, 6-4

MATCHDAY FOUR
Blue Group race hots up in four-way tie

Düsseldorf is no closer to finding out the finalist in the Blue Group as they were when the tournament started on Sunday, as a four-way tie emerged in the lead up to Thursday and Friday's deciding fixtures. The Group will be decided on matches and sets after the United States and home team Germany both recorded their first victories of the ARAG ATP World Team Championship. The USA ensured they would climb to the top of the group for now after Wayne Boyd and Morgan Carter combined to seal the tie 3-0 against Chinese team Li Ming Wang and Li Wang; but the crowd were more intent on cheering on Becker Haas and Alex Peters to a surprise upset of János and Zoltan Varga. Haas and Peters lost the first set 3-6, and it looked to be business as usual as they slumped to 0-2 in the second. However the packed Düsseldorf crowd got right behind the new look German pair who rallied to claim the second set 7-5 and then a match tiebreaker 10-3. Following the second matches, the US sit on top of the table with a match record of 4-2 (8-4); closely followed by Germany 3-3 (8-8), Hungary 3-3 (6-8) and China 2-4 (4-10).

In two doubles matches that meant absolutely nothing in terms of results, Croatia stitched up a second straight 3-0 victory whilst the CWLand doubles pair against bottled it in the match tiebreaker. Miroslav Brdar and Adem Tadić were clinical for the Croats in their victory over new look Spanish pair Sanchez Emelio and Javier Villaneuva; Croatia maintaining their undefeated streak with a 6-4, 6-1 win over the pair from Spain. CWLand pair Jojo Mustard and Heath Davis weren't as clinical, though, as they slumped to a second straight defeat. No-name Serbian pair Dusko Milosevic and Savo Petkoviä took the first set in tight circumstances, before the Davis-Mustard pairing rallied to bagel the Serbs in a dominant second set. But where most would expect the side to carry on their dominant touch into the match tiebreaker, they would not as Team Serbia picked up a consolation 7-5, 0-6, 10-8 victory.

WHAT THEY SAID -

"It isn't ideal, but we aren't at the stage of the competition where we can afford to experiment" - CWLand captain James Nixon rejects claims that doubles pairing Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard will be prematurely split.

"First stop Düsseldorf; next stop the world!" - Alex Peters has slightly inflated hopes after Germany's 2-1 win over Hungary. How about you focus on beating the USA first, Alex?

"It is very frustrating, but it shows where I really am in the world. It is better to find out now than at the French Open" - A dejected Li Wang of China finds a positive in the wake of two straight set defeats.

"He has played some very good tennis so far, I hear. But he's not beaten any one good, so I'm not too worried" - Gunther Heug remains unfazed ahead of his match against the unbeaten Morgan Carter. Does he forget that he lost to Zhenyu Fok on Sunday?

"It is out of our hands, now, and I can't help but thinking we let the team down" - Zoltan Varga reflects on he and his brother's loss which made qualifying for the final very hard for Hungary.

"I think it was a team effort" - Winless Imre Medgyessy wryly adds to Varga's comments.
