Jamee Hancianu has moved one step closer to a dream finals appearance at an ATP Masters Series event, but has world number three
Daniel Páez Blanco standing in his way after a
7-5, 1-6, 7-6(1) victory over German
Becker Haas. The world number 38 is all but assured of edging inside the world's top thirty and earning a seeding at the French Open in a fortnight after pulling off a sensational win. Despite a poor performance in the second set, Hancianu was able to match it with the highly rated German; the two grinding out punishing rallies throughout their near three-hour showdown. But it was the 19-year old who got the better of Haas at the most opportune times as he ran away with the third set tiebreaker to seal the biggest victory of his career.
Unfortunately for CWLand, Hancianu will not be joined in the semifinals by
Randy Smeltz, as the world number 29 fell to local talent
Sanchez Emelio. Smeltz fought valiantly against his higher ranked opponent, but was unable to play his best tennis when pitted against a hostile crowd and a rampant Emelio. Despite trading breaks with the Spaniard in the first set, Smeltz was first to crack as he dropped serve late in the opener to hand the world number 25 the first on a silver platter. It was a similar story in the second as the always consistent Smeltz stuck close to Emelio, but was unable to impose himself on the match as he was again foiled on his own service. Emelio's
7-5, 6-4 victory sets up a surprise semifinal showdown with red-hot Argentine
Juan Moreno, who upset second seed
Radivoj Daneu in the fourth quarterfinal.
Seeds Out: 2-Radivoj Daneu (SRB); 5-Darcy Cowan (USA).
BSI Lugano Challenger
Semifinals - Lugano
Draw
It will not be an all-CWLand clash in the final of the BSI Lugano Challenger, after
Rob Bowenburg was upset in his semifinal show down with Chinese fourth seed
Li Ming-Wang. Bowenburg, who had dropped just one set this tournament, struggled early against the consistent Li - the world number 102 storming to take the first set 6-1. Keen not to be embarrassed, Bowenburg fought back in the second and looked in control as he claimed an early break to take a 3-1 lead. Despite being broken back, Bowenburg still claimed the second to send the match to a decider. But the clay court took its toll on the CWLander as Li began to control the points convincingly as he surged to a 3-0 lead. The lead was too much for Bowenburg to overcome; Li prevailing in three sets
6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Top seed
Heath Davis will compete in his first career final after he came from a set down to knock out eighth seed
Tu Haifeng. Davis hadn't dropped a set all tournament, and was surprised early by the Chinese Taipei youngster who took the early break. Davis, who has been untroubled on service this tournament, regained his steel as he broke back right away - but was shocked by the consistent 23-year old who ensured that Davis wouldn't have his own way on service. Down a set, Davis rallied to take an early 4-0 lead in the second, but was again foiled by the ever-persistent Tu who forced the CWLander deep into the second. But it was there that the 21-year old from New Zealand found momentum to take the second, and then control the play in the decider. Whilst Tu persisted, he was unable to break the will of Davis who, despite all fitness worries, booked his place in the final of the Challenger thanks to a
4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Seeds Out: 2-Rob Bowenburg (CWL); 8-Tu Haifeng (TPE).
Draw open wide for Blanco
As
Radivoj Daneu fell in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrilena Masters Madrid, many pundits were saying that there is little that could stop world number three
Daniel Páez Blanco claiming an unprecedented sixth title on clay. Their thoughts may be true as Blanco knocked out fifth seed
Darcy Cowan in a clinical straight sets performance to coincide with the fall of second seed Daneu to Argentine
Juan Moreno. Despite four remaining the tournament, many are licking their lips in anticipation of a finals showdown with Blanco and the red-hot Moreno; the powerful 24-year old has dropped just one set this tournament in a rampant display. "[Moreno] has no doubt been one of the best players this tournament," Blanco told Spanish television station
Teledeporte, "He's a big man - very powerful - and has beaten some very good opposition." But Blanco wasn't keen to talk any more about a possible finals showdown with Moreno; "I am focussed on my match with
Jamee Hancianu and am not thinking that far ahead. I am sure [Moreno] is thinking the same when he plays Sergio [Joaquin]".
