The lads were next in action at home to Yorks***e in the National League. A healthy crowd had turned up in anticipation of the thrashing they're opponents rightly deserved. Unfortunately there would be no DJ for this match as the local residents had complained to the council and we had been banned from playing any music. Stupid neighbourhood watch.

On a nice pitch and a lovely day (as it always is at the CW Arena) we batted first, but Chubby England paceman Hoggard managed to get rid of star man Bennett early and followed it up by dismissing England Teammate Vimes cheaply as well. Ferd and Weber added a half century partnership before 3 quick wickets, including that of Ferd for 67 left CW 137-5. Scott Craze looked in fine form however and with good support from Age Master(23) and Kearsley(39*) his unbeaten 61 led CW to a very competetive 259-6.

Right from the start Kearsley and Hall were causing problems and Mcgrath, Vaughan and Wood were bakc in the pavilion in no time. Thomas then came on and he took 4-39, assisted by Halsey and Cloete, and the farmer boys were all out for 134, a huge win.

After a shower the boys all went out to throw stones at the local houses, if we cant have a DJ, they cant have any windows.

Whilst the boys are clearly in good form in the one day game, the same can not be said of the longer vareity. The inability to bowl sides out twice is clear as the sides in the top divsion are not rolling over as easy as they were in the second division last year. The poor form of last years stars, Bluefox, Nichani and Chapman has also been a problem.

The next County Championship game was against Somerset and upon winning the toss CW decided to bat and get a total they could attack from. Unfortunately it didn't start well, Bennett and Ferd going early as CW slumped to 29-2. What followed showed why many pundits are tipping CW to challenge for the title next year, Jellett(in for Vimes) and Cloete added 191 for the 3rd wicket and both scored centuries to set CW up for a big score, unfortunately a mini collapse ensued, the Web falling from 220-2 to 256-6 only to be rescued by an Age Master half century which enabled them to pass 400.

The bowling couldn't match the batting however and Marcus Trescothick took advantage as he and A Thorpe(82) and Turner(67*) powered Somerset to 458 all out and a 56 run lead, with the game in the evening session of the 3rd day there looked only one winner. Malone was the pick of the CW bowlers with 3-87 but no one had anything to write home about.

While the bowling srtuggled the Batting again proved strong enough to save the draw, Ferd(85) and Bennett (74) built a 163 run opening partnershiip and Cloete and Weber put on an unbroken half cnetury partnership as CW declared at tea on 250-3.

Kearsley took 2 quick wickets and Cloete added a 3rd but it was scant consolation for CW who really need to get a couple of wins under their belts.

The squad was announced for the 1st test against South Africa and it contained a few surprises, the likes of Malone and Vimes were left out but Age Master was selected and Sean Bennett is inline for his test debut after receiving a call up.

Disapointed at getting dropped but our batting looks very good at the moment and I'm sure with some dedication the bowlers can form good partnerships.

Next up was one of the toughest tests of the season with an away trip to Cardiff to face Glamorgan in the county championship. Miraculously the Cricket Web team were still in contention for the title despite only winning 2 of 10 games. Glamorgan were surprisingly battling relegation, even though they had won a game more than CW. The main reason for the relative success of the CW team was that they had 41 batting points whereas the team with the second highest batting points had only 25. A testement to the solidity of the batting line up, if not to the bowlers.

With Bennett and Age Master on England duty (Scores to come later) The web were forced to make changes and Blewy came in to open the batting. Vimes was recalled and Pickup was included.

Glamorgan won the toss and took the game away from CW in the first 2 sessions, an opening partnership of 206 between Powell(94) and James(166) blunted the Webs attack and although Pickup fought back with 4 wickets, and no other player passed 50, Glamorgan posted a formidable 433.

The reply began badly with Ferd and Blewy both gone and the score 13-2. Vimes(29) dug in and With Jellett added 84, Jellett was the next man out for a composed 79. Cloete hit an uncharactaristicly slow 39, but Eclipse was the batting star hitting 94 as Craze and Kearsley helped to boost the score to 363 all out.

Needin quick wickets, it didn't happen, Powell(108) and James(78) adding a further 175, before Maynards 83* gave Glamrogan a massive lead with time to spare. 326-3 declared.

CW knew they would have to bat out a lot of overs, 99 to be precise on a worn pitch and it was essential they got a good start. Ferd and Blewy made up for their poor 1st digs with half centuries in an opening stand of 118 made in 40 overs. Just as things looked solid for the Web though they lost 7-56 to collapse to 174-7 after 65 overs. Only 3 wickets left and a lot of time to go. Kearsley hit out for 35 from 33 balls but he was out in the 75th over and was followed by Thomas in the 80th. 19 overs to play and only Neil Pickup and Buggsy Malone left! Pickup nicked a single off his first ball but 2 balls later Buggsy, trying to keep the strike, nearly gave it away being dropped behind. Pickup played the next over taking a 2 but surviving a close LBW shout. And Buggsy could only take a 2 off the next over meaning Pickup had the strike. The ginger battler promptly took a 3 off the first ball to give the all rounder the strike, Buggsy then played and missed. It continued in this cat and mouse manner for another 10 overs before the CW players began to visualise the draw Malone almost got 2 ****y and was lucky to get away with a leading edge which went for 4. Amazingly Pickup decided to attack Wharfs last over and smashed the Yorkshire reject throught the covers and midwicket as his confidence grew. The final over from Thomas was duly played out and CW had secured a famous draw - an unborken last wicket stand of 47 from Malone(49 from 129) and Pickup(18 from 40) was to go down in the legends. Pickup was the fans man of the macth allthough James got the official version.

At a critical stage of the season, several of the CW squad were exhibiting signs of exhaustion and the coach had to shuffle his resources around. Pickup was rested after his exertions, though the after match celebrations of his highest first class score were perhaps more to blame, others also had a breather as CW took on Notts in the National League. At home again, but still without a DJ, and no equipment either as the stone throwing incident obviously didnt go down well with the locals and a breakin left the DJ booth empty. Halsey said he knew some pikey's he could get to sort them out.

Nottinghamshire chose to bat first and Malone struck with the score on 3, but a 76 partnership between Bicknell and Afzaal put Notts on track. CW didnt let them get away though and steadily got the upper hand with Nath and Thomas excellent in particular. 6 wickets between them they restricted Notts to a poor 177-8 from the 45. Thomas 3-33 and Nath 3-38 but the others were tight.

Four quick wickets rocked the reply but Ferd's 59 and and unbroken partnership of 89 between Eclipse (46*) and Craze(37*) led CW home with 8 overs to spare.

Responding to recent unrest and criticism of the selection process. The managment would like to ask its team member for opinions.

This season the managment has selected the best team available to win the matches. This is the current policy which has led the CW team to the top of the National League, the final of the Super Cup, third in the County championship and to the semi final of the C & G.

However, the managment has received a complaint that the team should not be selected on merit and that it is 'unfair' and everyone should get a game, regardless of individual form and the consequent results.

The managment would like to ask if other squad members would welcome the 'give everyone a game' approach or whether the current policy should be continued

Cheers

No way! The team should be selected on merit. You don't see national or state selectors chopping and changing the team just to give everyone a go. If this was a sim for junior cricket or local park cricket I might agree, but we have county championships to win, etc. I say keep it the same. Whoever is whinging should hit the nets or the centre wicket for some much needed practice. I for one, would not want to take ths spot of someone who is performing better than I am.
