well I def think this could be thread worthy depending on what happens in the next couple of days, albeit with a need for strict moderation....

May: Yes, his supporters probably had a sinking feeling yesterday

In other news someone has uploaded highlights of five of the six tests of the 78/79 Ashes.

That is absolutely brilliant. Have to sign that one about Boycott, absolutely perfect summary of the man.

Interesting. I wonder how that works at the urinals. I could see lines doing laps of the stadiums because people hold it in to all go at once during the breaks.

A socially distant crowd at a test in NZ wouldn't look any different to a normal one.

(or more seriously, in WI and maybe Pak and SL as well).

While searching for newspaper articles from the 1977 Ashes I found a line I quite like:

One of the nice things about watching cricket televised from England is that we are spared Norman May, but one of the unhappy things about it is that we must suffer Jim Laker.

Whatever it takes!!!
Why the hell was Lara batting at #9 in this game?

I've been watching a bunch 80s ODI highlights recently. I know Burgey bangs on about it, but the number of wickets Botham gets with really crap balls is just extraordinary. The long hop well wide of off, hit to anywhere between third man and square leg, is his specialty.

**** gets wickets

had a guy at an old club of mine win the competition bowling award by taking 35 wickets of putrid finger-spin, about 30 of which were caught at deep mid-wicker from half trackers.

meanwhile the professional Sri Lankan first-class spinner at the other end took half as many despite being at least a 35529519 times better bowler

Shahid Afridi, never known for his consistency with the bat, had a 20 inning period in test cricket from Feb '02 to Jan '06 where he hit 970 runs @ 51.

Included in this were 4 centuries, 4 fifties and 4 ducks

If you cut off the beginning and end of his test career, there is a large middle portion where over 22 tests and 40 innings(from 27/48 total) he averaged 41

Also, there's nothing like large amounts of John Emburey or Geoff Miller to dampen down a 'highlights' package.

Only having 20 innings in 4 years is interesting

Can only assume he wasn't a regular selection which is a surprise if he's making 4 tons and 4 fifties in that time along with his bowling

Beats me, but then again it is virtually impossible to attempt to comprehend the logic of the Pakistan selectors at the best of times

3 of those tons (and a 92) were scored in the final 7 innings of this period from mid '05 to early '06. Later that year ('06) I think he actually retired from tests and then made a one-off comeback in 2010 before retiring again. So part of this is down to Afridi's own personality. In that one off test he actually got 31 off 15 in the first dig lol

The '06 retirement came right as he was actually starting to become a good test batsman and probably would have a stable spot in the XI, against all odds really considering his batting style, but yeah he pulled the plug on that.

Would have been interesting to see if he could have sustained that good form over a long run in the test side. Surely not but we'l never know

Just because it obviously makes it that tiny bit more impressive, his strike rate during this 20 inning period where he averaged 51 was exactly 100.
