Core Six Influence

Ian Chappell has just written that a succesful team needs a core of six outstanding players "core six influence" .

The basic theory is that this core of players influence result of matches; if they perform well then victory is within reach but if the bulk of them struggle then it won't matter if the other five play out of their skins.

He stated that the make-up of the core six is two top-class bowlers, two top order batsmen, an all-rounder and a good wicket-keeper.

So the question is, who has the best "core Six" in International Cricket at present?

I'll have a go at the Aussie Core six:

Two top-class bowlers: McGrath & Warne

Two top order batsmen: Ponting & Hayden

An all-rounder: ummm Watson, no Symonds, ummm can Hussey count????

Good wicket-keeper: Gilchrist


I guess a Core five is good enough for the World No. 1

Not in tests, that's for sure. Only played for two months out of the whole decade.

Grouping a whole coutnries side into 6 players is just wrong, Where was Australia's all rounder??

It makes no sense, sure, the good countries probably have 2 world class bowlers and batters, but that's not exactly rocket science is it?

Top Order Batsman: Fleming and Astle.
Bowlers: Bond and Vettori.
All Rounder: Oram.
Wicket Keeper: McCullum.

All of these palyers are pretty good test players but none of them are really "world class" with the exception of Bond when he is uninjured and sometimes Vettori and Fleming. Oram can't be too far away now that his back is coming right, he is a good test batsman and his bowling is coming along well.
