Core Six Influence

aussie tragic

International Captain
Ian Chappell has just written that a succesful team needs a core of six outstanding players "core six influence" .

The basic theory is that this core of players influence result of matches; if they perform well then victory is within reach but if the bulk of them struggle then it won't matter if the other five play out of their skins.

He stated that the make-up of the core six is two top-class bowlers, two top order batsmen, an all-rounder and a good wicket-keeper.

So the question is, who has the best "core Six" in International Cricket at present?

I'll have a go at the Aussie Core six:

Two top-class bowlers: McGrath & Warne

Two top order batsmen: Ponting & Hayden

An all-rounder: ummm Watson, no Symonds, ummm can Hussey count????

Good wicket-keeper: Gilchrist

I guess a Core five is good enough for the World No. 1 :)

So who was this allrounder who was in Australia's "core six" during all that success in the nineties, then?

England's I guess would be:

Batsmen: KP and Trescothick/Strauss
Bowling: Jones [can we include him in stuff like this now? If not, Harmison] and maybe Panesar.
All-rounder: Freddie
Wk: Erm, *cough*, *scratches head*........nope.

Are you sure this isn't Deano's work? This has Deano written all over it.

Um, if the bulk of your best six players all fail, you'll probably lose, but if they play well, victory will be within reach. OK then.

Gilly? Not wishing to open the whole "are keeper/batsmen real allrounders?" debate, but he's unquestionably worthy of a place based on his batting alone.

Not in tests, that's for sure. Only played for two months out of the whole decade.

I'm pretty sure Chappelli means allrounder in the conventional sense anyway.

That's a pretty irrelevant article.

Grouping a whole coutnries side into 6 players is just wrong, Where was Australia's all rounder??

It makes no sense, sure, the good countries probably have 2 world class bowlers and batters, but that's not exactly rocket science is it?

New Zealand:

Top Order Batsman: Fleming and Astle.
Bowlers: Bond and Vettori.
All Rounder: Oram.
Wicket Keeper: McCullum.

All of these palyers are pretty good test players but none of them are really "world class" with the exception of Bond when he is uninjured and sometimes Vettori and Fleming. Oram can't be too far away now that his back is coming right, he is a good test batsman and his bowling is coming along well.

India:

Batsmen: Irfan Pathan, Uthaapa, Wasim Jaffer, Guatam Gambhir.

Bowlers: Irfan, Munaf, Murali Karthik, Nehra.

Wicket Keeper: We are lucky we have TWO world class ones (Dhoni and Parthiv Patel).

Allrounders: Sehwag

We have more than six, and you can see what happens to the team in that situation.

Right, Dravid, Tendulkar and Sehwag aren't world class batsman anymore?

1. LOL. This is like being at the zoo.
2. Irfan is in your bowlers list and batsmen one. Why not just put him in "allrounder"?

Hes a bowler and a batsman, but not an allrounder dang it.

To be a true allrounder implies a towering competence with the ball and bat, a kind of mastery that can only be ascribed to a certain Virender Sehwag.

You stole the words right out of my mouth.

But just in case anyone didn't know I am obviously being sarcastic and am just joking around with that list.
