Can Tendulkar get 100 international hundreds?

Yes he really missed out on ODI hundreds in 2007 and he had three 80+ test scores that year as well. He will probably be disappointed that he couldn't get a second test hundred against NZ after getting three good starts. But looking at the last couple of years there are reasonable grounds for hope. From Jan 2007 to today is roughly the amount of time he will likely have left. In that period he scored 8 test hundreds which is exactly what he needs. He only scored 3 ODI hundreds but if he converted just 4 of his 7 90's he would have gotten 7 which is what he needs to get. So based on current form it's entirely reasonable to think he could do it.
Correction: he has scored only 7 test hundreds since 2007; still the general point remains.
India will not play the same no. of tests that they did since 2007.

3 Tests vs. SL in November 09, then 3 Tests vs. SA in February 2010 - so only six Tests in the next 12 months. After that, NZ visits in November, followed by a visit to South Africa in December. Tnen it's the World Cup in February 2011. So as of right now, he only has 12 Tests between now and the World Cup.

There are tours to/from Zimbabwe during that time, but no doubt they will be replaced by some random ODI engagements.
Considering 9 of those tests are in India, there is a reasonable chance he might score well enough to reach the higher 40s in terms of test 100s. I have a feeling he is going to miss out on the tour to SA due to injury etc.

12 tests is almost certainly not going to be enough so it depends on whether he wants to continue playing tests after the WC. Do you know what the schedule is after the WC. IIRC the Australia tour is in 2011/12 so that could be an incentive for him to continue. I wonder if there is any possibility of a Pakistan series at a neutral venue before the WC. That could be good for a couple of hundreds.
The year of the world cup is usually the year a team plays the least amount of Test cricket.
intrestingly we will play 12 test upto world cup from now and will then play 12 test in the world cup year 4 aganist WI 4 aganist england and 4 ahganist Aus in 8 months time

If he was to play all these 24 Tests he could get 6-7 hundreds if he does as well as he has done since his resurgance in the last three calendar years (2007-2009) when he has scored 7 hundreds in 25 games.

That should take his tally to 91 or so. PLUS what he does with odi's and the World Cup. It IS possible and I suspect once he gets into the nineties and beyond, he will not want to retire and the nineties of Tendulkar will take away ten billion finger nails !

Tendulkar scores more 100s per innings outside India than at home.

Yeah, I agree. He might retire from ODIs after the WC, but imo he'll carry on in tests as long as it takes to keep his records safe.

Fair enough. I can smile at the thought of Tendulkar deciding to play till Ponting announced his retirement from test cricket.

I dunno, I get the feeling he doesn't actually care that much about his records these days, he seem a bit too zen.

Personally I don't think anything can motivate him better than an opponent breathing down his neck, except perhaps the fact that he is playing for his country. I think all Indian supporters must actually be thankful to Ricky Ponting for giving the master a close chase in this wonderful contest.

Frankly with 63 international hundreds till date, I dont think Ponting has a whiff of getting to that 100 centuries mark. Since january 2008, in 42 matches (24 ODI's and 18 Tests) he has just 5 hundreds (4 in Tests and 1 in ODI's). He is a long way from 37 more.

He may still do it but its a very long shot.

The second Indian innings in the Wellington Test featured an event symbolic of what happened through the series and what could be expected in the years to come. Tendulkar walked off to a warm reception from the crowd, who suspected this could be the last time they would watch him bat, but Tendulkar didn't make a special acknowledgement of that reception. "Perhaps they think this is my last tour," he had said earlier during the tour, when asked about the standing ovations wherever he went. You never know with Tendulkar, and who would complain if he came here again? He entertained the crowds to the fullest: wholesome and innovative at the same time, while scoring a century each in the two formats he played in.
From Sid Monga's article in Cricinfo. Great to see Tendulkar hardly thinks it is his last tour to NZ.

Oops, I was referring to the test centuries alone. It is obvious that his records are going to be untouched in ODIs.

Yeah, but he's just 5 behind in tests. Biased_Indian pointed out earlier that he was just 2 behind Sachin at one point, but Sachin has pulled away of late. The long break that India have might work to Ponting's advantage.

Five tests in England to be exact. Given Ponting has not exactly set Ol' Blighty on fire even during his peak, I don't think he might hit more than 1 100 in the whole series. That said, these are English bowlers.......

Tendulkar has a long shot at the 100 100s, and Ponting has an even longer shot.
8-) While Ponting "may" overtake Sachin in Tests..he is way behind Sachin in the ODIs.He will not get anywhere near 50 100s in ODIs and the difference is too much to compensate for in Tests. But don't let that get in the way of your India-bashing:ph34r:
