Can Tendulkar get 100 international hundreds?

Yes, that's what he is saying. Ponting has a longer shot; i.e. his chances are lower than Tendulkar.

Looking at the test calendar I think Tendulkar has a serious shot if he is willing to stick around for those 8 months after the WC presumably after retiring from ODI's. In three years time in 2012 he will be 39 which is around the age Steve Waugh retired. He will have seven home tests against NZ and WI where he will have to cash in: score perhaps 4 hundreds in those two series. At his age he will get injured but if he can get by without missing more than 2-3 tests he will have a real shot. It all depends on how much he wants it. Maybe the BCCI can help him by organzing a series against Pakistan at a neutral venue while he is still around.

My sense is that he does care quite a bit about records and his legacy and if he can reach this extraordinary target, which may never be equalled, he will go for it.

8-) While Ponting "may" overtake Sachin in Tests..he is way behind Sachin in the ODIs.He will not get anywhere near 50 100s in ODIs and the difference is too much to compensate for in Tests. But don't let that get in the way of your India-bashing:ph34r:

It shouldn't matter, ideally. Individual milestones count for nothing. Team wins do. Even a few more scores in the 70s and 80s will do when they result in series wins and tournament wins. When the presenter asked Sachin at presentation ceremony about him missing a century again, he said that it doesn't matter as the Indians had won the series (against Pakistan).

Maybe the ICC should count ODI hundred's as first class hundreds as well - given the paucity of participation in domestic matches

91 now and 9 to go. Would have been 92 if not for that moron: Karthik. If Sachin stays fit in the next couple of years it's looking increasingly likely.

When was the last time he had more test 100's than ODI hundreds? He's on 46 test and 45 ODI now.

I think 1995. He hit his first 100 in ODIs only in 93 or 94 right? By that time he had 4 or 5 100s

Edit : Till 1998 his test match centuries > ODI 100s. At end of 1996 they were equal at 10 each

To the original post...I can only say inshallah (which means God willing, hopefully).
I have always had the greatest respect and admiration for the man..and I really really really hope he gets 100 centuries, 50 in each form...That would be a tremendous achievement. In 20 years time, people would look at it and place Sachin slightly higher than Brian Lara, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting.

7 more to go. At the rate he is going he could get to 100 by the end of the year. Overall it's looking more likely than not.

One thing about Tendulkar though. Be it his march towards his nth 100, he would still be damn nervous in the 90s and make every Indian supporter nervous.

It would be fantastic and it will never happen. Tendulkar is not a person who'd announce his retirement TILL he achieves such a landmark.

8 more right?
Yeah my mistake. And I agree that Sachin won't retire till it happens unless there is some serious injury or a steep decline in form. And once the Indian media gets hold of the story it's going to be obsessed over till he gets it.

Shame he managed to get dismissed in the 90s about 6,000 times in a row in 2007, or he'd be there.
Tendulkar's been out in the 90s in Tests and ODIs 24 times; 7 of them (ie, nearly 1\3rd) came in the space of less than 5 months between late-June and mid-November 2007.
