The Wheel is Forever
He can probably make just as much money, and probably more, if he gave up Tests and played T20s only for a couple years longer.D) There's that much money in cricket now, and Sehwag's going so well, he'll keep going anyway.
I didn't know that not letting someone retire was an option.Okay, Sehwag is on record saying that he prefers batting at 4, but he won't get the opportunity until Sachin retires. He's even said he'll retire after a 100 tests (on 76 right now).
So, presuming Sachin is still going on like the duracell bunny when Sehwag plays test #100, and Sehwag is still top dog Sehwag, would you:
A) Let Sehwag retire like he wants to, and continue playing Sachin at 4.
B) Play Sehwag at 4 and tell Sachin to pick another number or get lost.
C) Keep Sachin at 4, try and convince Sehwag to play at 5, and go back to playing musical chairs with the opening berth?
And no, Sehwag will never be a middle order batsman. He would be a better batsman at #4, but India need him to open much more.
Sehwag is crazy destructive against spin, and when the ball gets a bit older. It's almost certain he'd do better there than he has opening, which is saying something. But India won't go back to the revolving door at the top of the order as long as he is around, whether he outlasts Sachin or not.
And if he wants to retire in 24 more Tests, he'll probably retire only a year or so after Sachin.
