Can Sunil Narine become an all time great?

No, he's employed by the WICB. They gave him an NOC to allow him to play the IPL under certain terms. If he decides to breach those terms then it shows how little regard he has for them and it's quite right he's not selected.

The terms should've become obsolete when KKR made the final, it's a ridiculous choice they gave him.

This is like SL threatening to send a second string side to the World T20Is because the players wouldn't sign the contract - in the end common sense prevailed and they did what was best for SL cricket and postponed the deadline. It seems like the WICB does not have the best interests of WI cricket in mind.

The whole thing is madness...i'm still holding out hope that Narine will rush back to the Caribbean after the final and demand a meeting with the board so that common sense can prevail..leave him out for the game at Sabina by all means but let the man play the two other tests ffs :@ . If nothing positive comes to pass then i'm hoping Sunny can use this window to go and play county cricket for a month...at least he would be developing his four day skills at a decent level...i could actually live with that but for him to just be at home sitting on his backside would just be pathetic.

Well given he had already left halfway through the IPL season that would be an easy decision for anyone

You sound so matter of fact in your response. I think Narine is employed by KKR too and since he is currently playing for them, he is currently employed by them.

My reading of that, FTR, is that the WICB shouldn't have issued Narine a NOC for any date past the 31st of May. If he's staying on with the KKR, it looks like he has been given one for the entirety of the IPL. Poor planning on their behalf tbh.

The link stipulates, quite clearly, that international commitments are prioritised ahead of domestic commitments. Therefore his obligations to the WICB outweigh his obligations to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Whether he is 'employed' by KKR is utterly immaterial; the ICC regulations explicitly set out how conflicts between domestic tournaments and international commitments are to be resolved -- with the player representing his or her country.

He has contracts with both WICB and KKR, yes. But the ICC regulations state that his WICB commitments outweigh his KKR ones. The WICB should never have allowed this to happen by ensuring the NOC to play in the IPL expired before the date they wanted him back.

If it's an ICC regulation, then it's up to KKR to abide by the ICC as his employer and decide not to employ him for that match.

This is where we disagree. I simply said he is being loyal to his current employer, the question as to whether he is employed by his IPL franchise is important to what I'm actually saying. I have a full grasp of International > IPL in terms of contracts, but it doesn't mean he is not being loyal.

Or otherwise, it's up to the ICC to sanction against KKR for playing him.

But neither of those things will happen.

Yes, he could have made a decision to prioritise test cricket, but there are at least 3 other parties not prioritising Test cricket here.

1. KKR for playing him.
2. WICB for scheduling a series that potentially conflicts with the IPL.
3. ICC for allowing (lol) an IPL series to be scheduled that potentially conflicts with Test cricket.

But NUFAN, he's also currently employed by the WICB. So with this conflict, by being 'loyal' to one of his current employers he, by definition, has to be 'disloyal' to the other.

Oh if only we had a regulation to suggest which team takes precedence...

At the end of the day, I can't believe that nobody in the WICB is capable of reading a calendar. Utter incompetence to issue a NOC for the entirety of the IPL when you want him back the day before the end of the IPL. The WICB ****ed up and they're paying the price for it, though admittedly it would be nice for Narine to voluntarily reaffirm his commitment to Test match cricket and the West Indies as a whole.

Well, tbf to the WICB, they originally wanted him back about a week ago, but then extended it to the end of the season when it looked as if KKR wouldn't make the final, they then won 8 games in a row or something like that and qualified, leaving both Narine and WICB in a difficult position. While this posed a unique problem, the solution was to compromise due to the exceptional circumstances rather than remain inflexible.
