Lara but both have underwhelming padded away records.
Padded? Oh you mean because Lara didn't make runs vs Donald or the Wws away? Instead he made runs away vs Murali, Pollock/Ntini, McWarne (2005) etc. The man averages 48 away which is more than enough to be considered very good. Not on the same level as his great contemporary, which is why he's usually ranked lower. And don't tell me he played depleted teams either. He never played a depleted Aus team and he never got to feast on the likes of Bangladesh away either.

So it's early, but Lara is burying Sunny, but Viv, who's better than Lara is much closer.

This place is wild.

I think the "not close" comments for Viv agitated the Gavaskar voters, just shows you how saying the truth can be hurtful.

Viv

1974-1981 : 45 Tests. 3917 runs. Avg of 60. 13 tons

1982-1991 : 76 Tests. 4569 runs. Avg of 43. 11 tons
1982-88 – 57 Tests, 3591 runs, Avg of 46.64 with 10 tons

1982-88 — 44 Tests, 2845 runs, Avg of 49.05 with 8 tons

he was really only poor for his last three years, and even then, Lara's 1996-1998 was just as bad

Viv 1989-1992 – 19 tests, 978 runs, Avg of 36.22 with 1 ton

Lara 1996-1998 – 26 tests, 1693 runs, Avg of 38.4 with 3 tons
