Biggest jerks in Cricket

Andre Nel and Franklin Rose are two players that hardly seemed too pleasant when they last toured here.

Domestically, I'd probably go with Simon Doull - reports on his love life makes him sound like a jerk.

Again I have to say it - Not Swervyn Mervyn!? The guy was a champion, added some colour to the game! You're obviously going on his on-field demeanour and not his off field personality.....remember he played when attitudes towards sledging etc were a litte more liberal, with the crack-down coming at the end of his career.

Simon Katich!? What has he done?

It'd be nice to see explanations listed with each player mentioned as to why they're considered to be a jerk.....whether there's any real reasoning behind it or players have just been listed at random.

if i remember correctly they found a large sum of money in gavaskars locker not long ago. gavaskar is often said to be the man who started it all in the 80s.
So, if Gavaskar is a crook does it make Cronje's 'deeds' any greater/lesser

Oh.

Gavaskar was something else. The smartest operator in Indian cricket :D

Some very strange selections to the Indian team took place when he was skipper and had more say in selection than any other skipper before or since.

Yeah he certainly had a smerk on his face, its not always fun when you get out and you look up to see Pat Symcox dancing around you and pointing you to the dressing sheds. Its all in the game i guess still got under my skin i loved seeing him get out and then get some of his own..

Many Apologies as I had confused Langer for Katich my mistake .... You might think Mervyn Hughes on field personality is colourful and interesting, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion, how ever many others may beg to differ and describe his "on field" behaviour Crude, offensive, odious, Immeture and tasteless.

Yes we can thank people Like Hughes for contributing to the present plague of sledging ..... but he also was a wonderful bowler who was extremly talented .... pity.

And how does that prove that Gavaskar was involved in anything ? This incident happened probably 15 years after Gavaskar retired and had pretty much no influence in Indian Cricket selections.

it doesnt prove anything for certain, if it did he wouldnt be involved in cricket at the moment. its personal opinion, and a rumour, gavaskar is considered to be one of the ring leaders involved in match fixing. unfortunately match fixing wasnt suspected as much off then as it was after the cronje incident, so we will never know. the money in his locker to me says that he was involved in something crooked, no one carries that kind of money around from place to place.

WTF ?? Gavaskar was considered kingpins of match fixing ?? Says WHO ?? You ? because that is your personal opinion What a load of Horse **** !! :horse:

Do You even know how much money was there ?? 15000 USD. Dude it may seem a lot to you, but for someone as rich as Gavaskar, it is like my penny collector. My Penny collector has about 10000 coins from 20 different countries.

Mr. Gavaskar had admitted that the foreign currency belonged to him. He claimed that the travellers cheques were for $3000 and £ 7,500 received as allowances for personal expenses from Intext group of companies and that the foreign currencies were kept in the locker due to renovation work being carried out at his residence.

I know that explanation may not be enough for you. 8-)

Well, wel, well.

One has heard Gavaskar accused of many things in the past but one has never heard of his involvement in match fixing.

Fixing of selections , yes (allegedly) , settling scores through selections , yes (allegedly) , even taking money from cricketers for taking them on tour (allegedly) but match fixing ??? no one that I know of has ever accused Gavaskar of this.

I understand where you're coming from with Merv and sledging, he was into it in a big way. He was also the first guy into the opposition dressing rooms at the end of the days play with a couple of beers in his hand though, and played the game the way it should be played in my opinion - hard on the field, but all is forgotten once you finish a days play. I know different cultures approach the whole sledging issue in different ways though so each to their own.

I'll sign off with a few gems from the big man though:

* In a game against India Sunil Gavaskar decided he'd try to put Big Merv off his stride by sledging him from the get go. His phrase of choice involved calling Merv a 'Bus Conductor' and as the duel went on throughout the match Sunil was relentless. Merv managed to pick up his wicket in the second innings of the match, and as he ran past Sunil he yelled out 'tickets please'.

*Merv suggested to an umpire in a state match in Australia that his team (Victoria) were going to declare the bowling because they couldn't get a wicket.

*and an excerpt from Merv's book to finish with: (from his last ever tour in SA)

'Taylor gave Hughes the initial over after lunch on the final day and he lumbered in for his first ball, delivered it at three-quarter pace at best, and then doubled over clutching his back. With thoughts that their enforcer had again broken down, Taylor, Healy, and the Waugh twins began charging up from slips to check the big man's health. As everyone approached, including a concerned Cronje, Hughes ****ed one leg and dealt with the remains of whatever flatulence was brought on from lunch, and then headed back to his mark for ball two.

Hughes: " I ran in and bowled the ball and then went 'ooooh', and bent over with my hands on my knees. I looked up and Heals has his hands on his head while Tubby was just looking down and shaking his head. It showed they were still on tenterhooks about me. The slips cordon looked shattered and they all started to run towards me. Tubby got about 5 yards away and I let rip with a monster and just walked off. I bowled the next ball and I was hoping I wouldn't get an edge because they were all laughing".

Err That would be Javed Miandad.

Robin Smith & Merv Hughes

During 1989 Lords Test Hughes said to Smith after he played & missed: "You can't f**king bat".

Smith to Hughes after he smacked him to the boundary: "Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f**king bat & you can't f**king bowl."

Merv Hughes & Javed Miandad

During 1991 Adelaide Test, Javed called Merv a fat bus conductor.

A few balls latter Merv dismissed Javed: "Tickets please", Merv called out as he ran past the departing batsman.

Merv Hughes & Viv Richards

During a test match in the West Indies, Hughes didn't say a word to Viv, but continued to stare at him after deliveries. "This is my island, my culture. Don't you be staring at me. In my culture we just bowl."

Merv didn't reply, but after he dismissed him he announced to the batsman: "In my culture we just say f**k off."

Hahahahaha

Personally I dont think this kind of banter is bad for cricket, Merv was an Entertainer and I enjoyed the way he played his cricket. But the aussie teams under Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh took it too far and gave it a different twist in the name of 'Mental disintegration'. Fortunately Cricket Australia and captain Ponting have taken a stand against it and it is really good.

Ok, i wasn't sure of the name, but couldn't be bothered looking it up.

I'm not 100% convinced that Waugh etc were the ones who took it too far though, they certainly gave it a different name.......certain people seem to have taken offence at the term sledging, presuming that it always contains personal abuse and/or racial taunts, but I was always under the impression that anything said on the field that was intended to have a negative affect on the players form would be regarded as sledging, including the examples given above with Merv.

Merv also came under fire when there was a crackdown in 1994. All of a sudden typical Merv behaviour like some of the examples listed above was considered to be wrong. The possible difference between Merv and McGrath etc is it was obvious to most that Merv was having a bit of fun, whereas the others have committed some serious breaches on occasions.
