Kevin Pietersen's making a fairly good stab at this...
Again I have to say it - Not Swervyn Mervyn!? The guy was a champion, added some colour to the game! You're obviously going on his on-field demeanour and not his off field personality.....remember he played when attitudes towards sledging etc were a litte more liberal, with the crack-down coming at the end of his career.Legglancer said:Macgrath

So, if Gavaskar is a crook does it make Cronje's 'deeds' any greater/lessertooextracool said:if i remember correctly they found a large sum of money in gavaskars locker not long ago. gavaskar is often said to be the man who started it all in the 80s.
nope someone just couldnt believe that gavaskar was in anyway involved in it......SJS said:So, if Gavaskar is a crook does it make Cronje's 'deeds' any greater/lesser![]()
Oh.tooextracool said:nope someone just couldnt believe that gavaskar was in anyway involved in it......
yes. I can see what you mean but wasnt there a mischevious glint to it ? It didnt leeok malicious or nasty but like someone having fun. No ?ijaz said:I dont know if he has been mentioned but one player that always got under my skin was Pat Symcox from South Africa, such a smart ***
Many Apologies as I had confused Langer for Katich my mistake .... You might think Mervyn Hughes on field personality is colourful and interesting, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion, how ever many others may beg to differ and describe his "on field" behaviour Crude, offensive, odious, Immeture and tasteless.Son Of Coco said:Again I have to say it - Not Swervyn Mervyn!? Simon Katich!? What has he done?
It'd be nice to see explanations listed with each player mentioned as to why they're considered to be a jerk.....whether there's any real reasoning behind it or players have just been listed at random.

And how does that prove that Gavaskar was involved in anything ? This incident happened probably 15 years after Gavaskar retired and had pretty much no influence in Indian Cricket selections.tooextracool said:nope someone just couldnt believe that gavaskar was in anyway involved in it......
it doesnt prove anything for certain, if it did he wouldnt be involved in cricket at the moment. its personal opinion, and a rumour, gavaskar is considered to be one of the ring leaders involved in match fixing. unfortunately match fixing wasnt suspected as much off then as it was after the cronje incident, so we will never know. the money in his locker to me says that he was involved in something crooked, no one carries that kind of money around from place to place.Sanz said:And how does that prove that Gavaskar was involved in anything ? I understand where you're coming from with Merv and sledging, he was into it in a big way. He was also the first guy into the opposition dressing rooms at the end of the days play with a couple of beers in his hand though, and played the game the way it should be played in my opinion - hard on the field, but all is forgotten once you finish a days play. I know different cultures approach the whole sledging issue in different ways though so each to their own.Legglancer said:Many Apologies as I had confused Langer for Katich my mistake .... Yes we can thank people Like Hughes for contributing to the present plague of sledging ..... but he also was a wonderful bowler who was extremly talented .... pity.
Err That would be Javed Miandad.Son Of Coco said:* In a game against India Sunil Gavaskar decided he'd try to put Big Merv off his stride by sledging him from the get go. His phrase of choice involved calling Merv a 'Bus Conductor' and as the duel went on throughout the match Sunil was relentless. Merv managed to pick up his wicket in the second innings of the match, and as he ran past Sunil he yelled out 'tickets please'.
Ok, i wasn't sure of the name, but couldn't be bothered looking it up.Sanz said:Err That would be Javed Miandad.
Robin Smith & Merv Hughes
During 1989 Lords Test Hughes said to Smith after he played & missed: "You can't f**king bat".
Smith to Hughes after he smacked him to the boundary: "Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f**king bat & you can't f**king bowl."
Merv Hughes & Javed Miandad
During 1991 Adelaide Test, Javed called Merv a fat bus conductor.
A few balls latter Merv dismissed Javed: "Tickets please", Merv called out as he ran past the departing batsman.
Merv Hughes & Viv Richards
During a test match in the West Indies, Hughes didn't say a word to Viv, but continued to stare at him after deliveries. "This is my island, my culture. Don't you be staring at me. In my culture we just bowl."
Merv didn't reply, but after he dismissed him he announced to the batsman: "In my culture we just say f**k off."
Hahahahaha
Personally I dont think this kind of banter is bad for cricket, Merv was an Entertainer and I enjoyed the way he played his cricket. But the aussie teams under Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh took it too far and gave it a different twist in the name of 'Mental disintegration'. Fortunately Cricket Australia and captain Ponting have taken a stand against it and it is really good.
