Battle of the Test Innings

I'll have to go with VVS Laxman here. "Unbelievable" is an overused word in sport, but it definitely applies here. Turned the test &, moreover, the series on its head.

&, FWIW, the greatest innings I've ever seen is Astle's 222. I've never seen a player more totally "in the zone" in any sport. I really thought yer Kiwis were going to win the test.

VVS Laxman's knock triumphs 22-5.

Next up:
Graeme Smith's 259 against England, Lord's, 2003

Garry Sobers' 254 for the World XI vs Australia, MCG, 1972

All right, all right, so Sobers' innings wasn't in a Test match. There, I've acknowledged it. Happy?

Smith's knock was good, and the fact that he hit 2 doubles is what is really memorable about him in that series. But Sobers' knock was amazing. He had been struggling all tour IIRC, and he just came in and went bang, finally showing the people of Australia what he's capable of. So I have to vote Sobers

Sobers, easily. To take on Lillee at the height of his powers and inspire such awe was truly great.

I don't think Smith's knock was any better than many other double centuries one could name.

I'm actually going to have to do the unthinkable & vote for my old chum Fat Gray Smith. Sobers's was a great effort, especially when one looks at the illustrious names who failed around him, but it's not a test innings. Sorry.
