Battle of the Test Innings

Has to be Lara, once again. Had it have been up against McCabe's other immortal knock (first test of 32/33) I'd have gone for that one tho.

Based on the series situation, the fact that it was a live Ashes test and the quality of the bowling in that series, I'll go with Ponting. Sobers innings was no doubt a fine one, and facing Lillee is significant enough in and of itself, but you'd have to say that 1-1 in the Ashes in the fourth innings of the third test had far more riding on it than a World XI match, and the pressure had a large hand in defining just how brilliant Ponting's innings was..

Ponting.

Gotta go Ponting. Sobers was, from what I've read, more a masterclass in batting whereas Ponting's knock is pretty much known more for the situation of the series and how well he handled the pressure he was under, him being captain of an Australian team under siege looking at a 2-1 deficit in a series they were strong favourites in. The only thing between a 2-1 deficit was Ponting's wicket, and it was amazing.

Would his knock still be as memorable if Ponting or McGrath got out and England won? Not sure, but they didn't, so technically his match was a match-saving one despite his dismissal late in the innings.

Punters.

After watching the super series (thats what it was called?) debacle i am not willing to believe that people genuinely give their best in these sortof matches.

I second Xuhaib's opinion. Test cricket is test cricket.

Ricky Ponting for me too.

The dual between Lillee and Sobers in this series was legendary, and I believe Bradman said this Sobers knock was the best he had seen on Australian soil. Your point stands, but I think it's fair to say that someone as competitive as Lillee would have been giving his all under the circumstances.

It doesn't remove the fact that Ponting was under immense pressure while Sobers was not, but I do think that the Australian attack would have been giving everything.
