Battle of the Legends

I don't look that closely at FC records, even Ashley Giles has a good FC record.
Yeah, but that's all there was in the 1870s. Grace's test record isn't bad by the standards of the time, but his first class record when it was the highest level of competition available in world cricket was extremely good. He was the best batsman in world cricket by a huge margin. It's simply not a case of someone with a poor record having a strong reputation - his reputation was built on being a dominant runscorer. Nobody else was averaging 70+ on the sorts of wickets he played on.

Anyway, I agree he should go a long way in a battle like this. Basically tailor made for earlier cricketers who don't get respect in statistical comparisons.

Preliminary Round, Battle 2

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is not merely defined by cricket records, but rather by aura, impact and legacy.

Warwick Armstrong (all-rounder, captained Australia to 8 consecutive test victories over England)

Malcolm Marshall (fast bowler, 376 test wickets @ strike rate 46.22, average 20.95)

This battle will close at any time with a lead of at least 10. Otherwise, it will close after 6 hours with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 12 hours.

Tough draw for Armstrong he certainly fits all the characteristics of a legend of the game.

Marshall is an all-time great however, and definately a legend - and died too young.

Crap, 128 names? Why so many?

Adhartic you should have had the balls to just chop it to 64, or 96 at the least. :)

Anyway, this is a no contest, Marshall was just a great bowler but Armstrong was a genuine all-round legend.

The 'big ship' Warwick Armstrong for me.

96 would be ideal but cutting down involves additional complications; had I gotten additional input on who should be removed, I would have gone with that option.
Otherwise, I have to apply my own subjection and people may consider that biased. Each battle in this round should only last 6-12 hours so don't worry mate. :)
The preliminary round will weed out those who aren't genuine legends.

Yeah, fair play mate - I can see where you are coming from.

(though I myself would not have minded if you had culled a few, after all, it is your thread)

I just dislike seeing all these wannabe legends.

Armstrong is unlucky to be pitted against Marshall but the big West Indian gets my vote.
