Battle of the Cricketers

Steulen

International Regular
In the full realisation that I'm falling prey to recent over distant past, I can't look beyond the magic displayed during that sequence of just a few balls last week in Sydney.

Muralitharan

I would have voted Murali against most other cricketers - but the man who redefined batsmanship and opened the door to countless powerful, strokeplaying batsmen worldwide deserves recognition. Without Sir Viv, we may never have had a Pietersen, a Gilchrist, a Slater or an Afridi.

Viv was a fantastic player. I think Wisden once ranked him as third best test batsman ever behind Bradman and Tendulkar - based on an analysis of every single test match played, including strength of opposition, importance of innings, etc. Of course, it's a subjective analysis, and I probably wouldn't have ranked him that highly, but it's still going to more trouble than most of us do in our overall judgements, I guess. :) There's certainly little doubt though, that he's one of the very top ODI players ever, if not the best.

And Murali is most certainly one of the greatest bowlers we've seen - I won't bother repeating what's been said a lot already regarding the hardships he's faced.

I guess I'm going to vote Murali here, on the fairly arbitrary basis that I treasure great bowlers a little more, as I think they win more matches and are generally harder to find.

19-14 to Viv.

Here are the semi finals:

GS Sobers vs BC Lara
DG Bradman vs IVA Richards.

So, an Aussie and 3 West Indians in the final 4, and 4 of the finest cricketers ever to boot.

SEMI FINALS ----- ----- BATTLE ONE

GS Sobers (West Indies) (LHB,LFM/SLA/SLC)

BC Lara(West Indies) (LHB,LBG)

It doesn't get any easier, does it? As I've said before I think Brian Charles is simply the greatest player to watch when he's in the zone, but I think I'm going to have to vote against him for the first time simply because Sir Garfield was such a phenomenon: unquestionably the greatest all-rounder of all time & one of the top half-dozen or so batters as well.

Sobers

Three West Indians in the semi's, huzzah. Be nice to see them become a real force again one day.

Anyhoo back to the voting, well it has to be Sobers for moi, not far off the perfick cricketer, lots of bowling options and a splendid bat to boot.

Wow never expected to see this many West Indians go through anyway Sobers it is. Lara still my favorite batsman though.
