ROUND TWO ----- ----- BATTLE EIGHT

AC Gilchrist (Australia) (LHB, WK)

GD McGrath (Australia) (RHB, RFM)

A battle of the 2005 Ashes losing Australians.

Ouch. Nightmare match-up. Two all-time greats I've had the privilege to watch in their primes. Bet the Aussies have definitely got the whiff of an anti-crim conspiracy in their nostrils now! :D

I'd say McGrath has arguably been more important to the Aussies in their decade + of dominance, so that leans me towards him, but Gilly is unquestionably the best wicketkeeper/batsman of all-time (as distinct from best wicketkeeper) whereas Glenn isn't arguably even Australia's best seamer. So I'm going for

Gilchrist

Mcgrath IMO the principle person (along with S. Waugh) behind Australia's decade of dominance.

You're joking ... I'll have to go McGrath though. To have such longevity as a fast bowler is unbelievable. Also, I feel bowlers have had it tougher than batsmen in recent years

And Warne.

It's gotta be McGrath, just the mind blowing consistency of him and the fact that he doesn't rely on sheer pace to get his wickets like many other modern players, not to mention the fact that he's still around today and going strong. One of my all-time favourite players.

if it aint mcgrath and s waugh who then?
I was saying that Warne, along with Steve Waugh and McGrath were the players responsible for Australia's rise and dominance.

In some ways yes but im kinda biased in my opinions admittedly. Y? Because as great a spinner as Warne is I'll forever have nightmares of what Mcgrath and Waugh did to take the title of Worlds best from us the WI. The thing about Mcgrath (in particular) although i hate to compare a spinner to a seamer, is that i cant think of anywhere on earth or anyteam where Mcgrath has struggled.

So Lillee, Chappell, Miller and Davidson all go, and now this? Paytner, Hutton and Trueman continue on their merry way, mind you. :p

Anyway, this is incredibly hard. Neither of these two deserve to go in the second round, and both are all-time greats. I think I have to go for Gilchrist, because a) he's unquestionably the greatest ever in his position, while McGrath is only a candidate for such, and b) he would therefore make a World XI before McGrath would.

So, Gilchrist.

I am actually really surprised by all the votes for Gilchrist in this matchup - even though Gilly is my second fave player to watch in the Australian team, after Warne.

Surely, in an era in which bat dominates the ball to such a degree, with so many batsmen with very high averages, a bowler like McGrath is more indispensible - he can bowl fantastically well on any surface, and more often than not successfully dominates the best batsman in the opposition.

Also, Gilchrist's stocks have dipped a lttle in recent times, with some recurrent weaknesses being exposed and ordinary test performances against England and India in particular.

Glen McGrath for me.

Paynter was knocked out by Aravinda de Silva.
Hutton will face Sunil Gavaskar
Trueman will face Shane Warne.
