Battle of the Cricketers

nick-o

State 12th Man
This is a difficult one.

Headley averaged 60, but played only 22 tests. I guess the war got in the way, so no one can know what his career would look like if he'd played 50 tests, or a hundred?

Pollock has done his time and is coming close to 100 tests, and still his figures look good, bowling at 22, batting at 30+

The pundits say Headley was the black Bradman, but without having seen footage of him...

Going for Pollock here, with regret.

As much as carrying a team on your shoulders should be appreciated, I cant help but feel that Pollock might have done so too, if the situation arose ( now doesnt count, he isnt in his prime). So I'm going for the bowler whos almost an all-rounder, Pollock.

Headley, by a fair margin. I've expressed my doubts about Pollock in a previous battle (that he must have friggin' won, dammit)....

He beat Bob Willis 18-6
Oh yeah.... I actually voted for Willis in that one (and a real one, too - not a pity vote, I liked the way he played the game). Somehow I'd gotten it into my head that Pollock's path up to this point had been tighter.

This is one of the closest battles so far. Headley gets my vote fairly comfortably though. Carried his team to a greater extent than just about anyone else in the history of Test cricket. If a Test average of 60 isn't enough, his FC average is almost 70, which is (for all intents and purposes) third behind Bradman and Vijay Merchant.
