I know very little about Paynter except that he averaged something like 59 0ver a handful of tests so Da Silva for me.

Lillee and Chappell got knocked out in the first round, and Paynter gets a free pass?

Anyway, Paynter for me.
Unduly harsh on Aravinda there, Faaip. Arguably Sri Lanka's best ever batter.

Very hard to compare the two for me, Paynter sounds a wonderfully gutsy character (obviously epitomised by his 83 in the 4th test of 32/33) but aside from that footage I've seen v little of him & he played surprisingly little test cricket, possibly a reflection of our batting strength in his era. De Silva was amazing to watch in full flow, but was sometimes attacking to a fault. Looking at his profile on cricinfo I was surprised his test average wasn't higher (it's still more than acceptable, but doesn't do his talent justice IMHO), which is possibly testament to that.

On the grounds that he did it at the highest level for longer & is probably a more important figure in his country's cricketing history than Paynter it's

De Silva for me

Ok, so that's that farce over with, and Dale sneeks Aravinda in 6-5.
