Battle of the Australians

a massive zebra

International Captain
I will cast my vote for the bad track bully, VT Trumper. Made more of an impression upon the cricket watching public of his time than Healy could ever hope to do, and was almost universally considered the single best Australian batsman before Bradman.

another tough first round battle! I'm going to have to go with Trumper though. I've heard lotsa good stuff about him and he's been mentioned in the same breath as the don by a few cricketing people who I know who I think know a lot of stuff.

i dunno i always though that term was a compliment to how great his glovework was.
Do you think that iron gloves would help you to catch a ball? He got the nickname because early on in his career he dropped a lot of catches.

ha, well never really followed it up, but i've never heard he dropped a lot of catches early on in his career.

Yes. Wasn't Marsh's nickname Iron gloves?
Yes, but that was at the start of his career. However, he developed as his career progressed and had far softer hands. He was unrecognisable as a cricketer at the end of his career compared to the early part.

Marsh made himself a great cricketer. Dont let the fact that he dropped a few early cloud your view of his career.

i think chappelli gave him the nickname, and his view of nicknames tended towards the cruelly harsh - but complaining would only make it stick with the guys... :)

Trumpers a bit of an interesting fellow, seems really mysterious... He died really young, didnt he, which is really tragic.
Plus, being one of those guys who people flock to watch is always pretty special, so Trumper it is.

Yeah, that's all fine, but he's still wasn't a better keeper than Healy.

Trumper takes it 14-6. Too bad as I wanted Healy to go forward. Oh well...

Border - 2nd highest run scorer of all time, very good batting average and excellent captain who led the Australian revival in world cricket.

Gee, is this a no contest or what? I pushed for MacGill to be included, and now he faces Border. Tough luck.

Border is my pick.
