His FC stats are incredible, enough to make him a candiate for great in either batting or bowling, let along being an all-rounder.

Miller for me. Harsh on AB, but I think it's only right to favour the all-rounder when one's assessing a player's worth as a cricketer.

As a bemused onlooker (who's not read through the entire thread), can I ask why each round of comparisons is between players of different types (here, gritty batsman v extravagant all-rounder v bearded keeper)?

I struggle to see how any meaningful comparison can be made.

Anyhow Border gets my vote because I saw him play and he was bloody good.
To sum it up simply and shortly:

- What they meant to their team
- What they meant to the opposition of the time
- What they meant to their discipline(s)
- What they mean to Australian cricket in the overall picture
