Australian test selection thread 2015/16

Think you are way off the money on this one Midwinter. If you want to pick a veteran for a one-off Test it just has to be Bollinger who is the same age as Hogan, but is actually proven in Tests and is performing better at the moment too.

I've had a random thought (although Morgie did mention him in the post above) that Sean Abbott is going to come into the squad. We all know one of the selectors love him and he'll be seen as a good option to bat 8 despite having a mediocre record as a batsman. Also playing for NSW never hurts and with it being the West Indies I'm fairly sure that if someone comes in they'll be in their 20's.

Doug would be great to have around for a bit of a Windies bash.

Even better would be Hopes, a bit of a Windies bash as a thank you and goodbye would be ample reward for a hero of the Sheffield Shield.

They were interviewing Mcdermott on the radio and he was going on about having bowlers coming in bowling 140s (wish someone asked him about Siddle).

He then talked about Coulter-Nile being close/ready as long as he can keep his mouth shut.

Yeah who to pick as the back-up seamer is tough. Bird, Sandhu, NCN and Behrendorff are the standout options IMO, but NCN and Behrendorff have injury/recent playing concerns, I get the feeling nobody rates Bird, and Sandhu might lack penetration IMO. If they wanted a left armer (which I think they will), I'd be looking towards Bollinger. Faulkner also a good option at this point, but he has his own injury concerns too.

thought Hopes retired like 5 years ago lol

Come to think of it, Forkers Faulkner wont be the worst option either. He won't make it as a specialist bowler if every one are fit but at this point i'd certainly take him. Would add huge amount with the bat.

Marsh brothers will make 400+ runs each this series and cement their spots for years to come

Hogan reckons Abbott is a chance. All the options are flawed in some way. Injury or old or doesn't meet the 140kmh limit. I think it might be Fekete. They won't care he about the dropping.

Abbott must surely be someone trolling. Candu has better numbers with bat and ball (and I wouldn't consider him close to a test side atm)

The best bowlers outside the test squad are probably Sayers, Faulkner, Mennie, Bird and Hopes but they're not quick enough apparently

NCN I can come to terms with but Boland must be some sort of joke as he's neither quick or very good

looks like the 140 rule applies with NCN called in.

Boland ? He's a steady bowler, economical, experienced and Victorian therefore always worth a chance.
:)

So what is the message from this news.?
None of the bowlers in the shield games to date have impressed the selectors, because they have picked someone who hasn't played a shield game yet
Match fitness is not a concern, see above.
Taking a bag of wickets the day before the selection meeting is a possible selection criteria.

The real question is did Siddle bowl well enough to keep his place ?

So Boland just jumped what, from rock bottom on the queue to near top? Insanity.

Not entirely sure either what NCN has done to justify selection

Boland's pretty quick when he's in good rhythm; I saw him nudge 150 in a domestic one dayer a couple of seasons back.

I agree it's a silly pick ftr but he satisfies the "quick enough" criteria anyway.
