Australian test selection 2019-2020

I dont wanna speculate and I dont want this to turn into a speculation thing, but I'd love to find out eventually what's actually going on with Pukovski. There's never been a better time to be a young player with immense talent, and I had hoped this summer would see him and Patterson establish themselves as our middle order for the next however many years.

Define world class? I define it as a batsman who would be picked in most sides around the world if they aren't in a huge form drought.

It's a bit strange to say Australia have no decent batsmen when the last test series Australia played was a draw against England at home, and in a series where two of Australia's best batsmen had a horrid series as well.

I think some people confuse pushing for a world XI space with being a good test cricketer.

With the exception of India and possibly New Zealand, the batsmen I listed would be in the first XI, barring a run of bad form.

For example, the worst of the five, Head, would be competitive with Buttler, Warner would be picked to partner Burns and Khawaja and Labuschagne would be battling each other for England's non-Root 3/4 position (assuming Stokes bats 5).

South Africa have even more batting holes and the only thing that would be stopping them from picking any of those players I listed would be quotas.

Obviously cricket isn't played in a vacuum, but to me "world class" and "test class" are nebulous terms, but basically in my mind mean "wouldn't look out of place in most sides around the world". None of those players would.

When Travis Head plays grade cricket he is seen as a different class (because he stands out at that level) and its appropriate to that standard
I've also heard Renshaw has made mountains of runs in grade too, so this could be applicable to him too

You can apply this to international cricket. Steve Smith stands out by a mile in this Australia team, and his average would tell us that he is world class. Head, Khawaja, Labuschagne are not there.....yet

As an aside, Renshaw I really do like and hope he's back in the setup soon. Just the sort of opening bat Aus will need post-Warner

It's being openly stated that Bancroft is in the squad as a flexible concussion sub. I guess this makes sense because he can also fill in for Paine as keeper and batsman since he has a lower test batting average than him ;)

I guess this means Neser would sub for Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood bowling, but could he sub their batting given his batting ability as FC #7? What an uproar if he scored a ton?

They might need Richardson there just to be the 8-11 batting sub lol

Labuschagne is now the 2nd best Aussie bat in the ICC rankings (1. Smith, 14. Labuschagne and 17. Warner).

Also, can't believe Cummmins and Starc are ranked 6 and 7 as Test Allrounders so who needs Mitch Marsh

Finally, I heard on the radio that Starc is staying in Sydney to be with family while Pattinson flown into Adelaide as cover. If Starc can't play does Neser get a debut instead of bad boy Pattinson?

I hope Pattinson gets to play if Starc isn't. He's easily in the top 4 quicks around the country.

I don't mind Neser as a cricketer, but there is no way on the face of the earth he should get a game ahead of Pattinson, not a chance. Of course this is only relevant if Starc is unavailable, if he is available I see no reason to make any changes at all.

Since its a pink ball game does that give Neser's claims more validity? To even exceed Pattinson in this instance? I mean the swing factor might make him a good choice here. Whats up with Starc's family btw?
