Australian test selection 2019-2020

They also would have won matches with Marshall's grandmother in for him in that side but it doesn't mean it would've been a good idea.
Its not about good ideas, its about how can we actually enjoy any of the cricket this summer?

Because we're off to a terrible start.

Do you think an 8 man XI of this could beat the Bangladesh ATG XI?

Hobbs
Hutton
Bradman
Gilchrist +
Imran
Wasim
Marshall
Warne

Victorian batsmen clearly don't have the mental application for cricket it seems.

Something fishy is going on here, especially when it leads to Bancroft being selected because of his weak and malleable character thats apparently test material.

Based on the warmup game, Australia will need all the batting depth they can get.

The test squad is missing Kurtis Patterson instead of Bancroft, pity he is not available.

Hopefully Warner and Burns can score some runs at the top but I have my doubts that this is a good opening pair.

5 quicks and strong tail

6. Wade (c) (+)
7. Neser
8. Pattinson
9. Cummins
10. Starc
11. Hazlewood
If it was a three test series and Aus were 2-0 up then I'd like to see the five bowler policy (with Cummins at 7) to decrease their workload. Otherwise, this is asking for trouble

Bancroft being selected seems bizarre given his shield form, however when you look deeper.

(1) Maddinson, Pucovski and Maxwell not available

(2) leading shield bats are all over 30 and their ship has sailed (Cooper, Smarsh, Doolan, Henriques, Hughes, Stoinis)

(3) they wanted to balance the LH / RH bats in the order, so Khawaja and Harris out (stupid logic from selectors)

(4) the only other under 30 batsmen considered ready to play tests is arguably Handscomb.

Australia really needs to develop the U25 bats quickly (Renshaw, Street, Solway, Hunt, Phillippe) and allrounders (Green and Sutherland).

Would far prefer Khawaja for a home summer opening the batting than Bancroft.

Usman's papers must really be stamped: when a guy averaging over 40 in his test career is left out for someone averaging 26 after 18 test innings.

Khawaja is Australia's third leading run scorer in the last three years, and his test stats over the last three years are virtually identical to Warner's

I don't even like Khawaja, but seriously...Bancroft?

I guess if Langer thinks you're the heartbeat of the team though, fmd

Khawaja is woefully out of form. He hasn't made any runs in a year. I think he will be back but only after hitting a few shield hundreds. Then again Australia don't play many tests this year so he might not get a shot until 20/21 by which time he'll be mid 30s.

I've been the first to bleat on about how Bancroft is undeserving and should have had his cards marked after Newlands, but he's still relatively young and has a penchant for randomly making runs against strong attacks. If he can become more consistent then he's a long term project. I can understand a little the logic for bringing him in when literally nobody else is putting their hand up.

He shouldn't play though.

* Just not at test level.

The only thing that makes me not completely write-off Bancroft is that he hasn't played a great deal of opposition yet. Yeah he sucked against England but he did fare pretty well against South Africa, maybe England just seem uniquely poised to exploit his weaknesses? Still wouldn't pick him regardless but maybe he might surprise.

(I don't think that's really the case, but it is worth considering)

I think we just need to accept that India is the only country with the depth to have a proper world class batting line up at the moment. There simply aren’t 5 world class batsman that deserve selection for Australia. I can only think of one.

There's really 4, but one got dropped due to form issues.
