Australian test selection 2019-2020

They will discuss wednesday after the A game is finished and announce the teams thursday morning giving the team a week. Seems pretty normal to me when the A game is the most important game for selection.

Whats your non-dumb suggestion?

They should simply decide now. If they don't knows who the best XI are at this point they haven't been doing their jobs. One big score/ failure shouldn't make a difference. We've all played cricket before and know how easy it is to miss out.

FFS, it's going to be Harris again, isn't it?

I don't care how many runs he scores at Shield level, he should be blacklisted for at least 12 months post-Ashes.

Unfortunately, I think Harris keeps his place because Burns’ start to the season has been poor.

With Labuschagne, Smith and Wade locked in that leaves the last batting spot to one of Pucovski, Khawaja, Head or Smarsh.

They have all scored runs recently (although Khawaja hasn’t really against a red ball) and none of them are the incumbent. I think Smarsh would be a step backwards so it’s really a coin toss between Pucovski and Head.

^give it to Head I think. Despite a hundred in his first game, Pucovski is averaging 34.00 this season. Last thing we want to do is another Maddinson whereby a promising batsman is brought in when out of form.

Burns has mostly played on a spicy Gabba wicket this season and has done ok. Harris has played on absolute roads. I say give it to Burns. Harris has continuously shown he's not up to test standard.

You would have to be Victorian or a bigger idiot to not want Travis Head as an overqualified lower order batsman.

If it's between Head and Pucovski I honestly don't mind who plays. Head would likely score more runs but Pucovski should be blooded soon. This is the lowest stakes test summer in the cycle (although, when do the WI tour?).

You've sure changed your tune. Not a criticism, for the record I agree entirely, but interesting none the less

I actually think WI will do a fair bit better than they did last time tbh. Batting is still hot garbage but that actually have a pretty good attack these days.

Low bar, I know

If their attack is Gabriel, Roach, Holder, Joseph and a spinner then you'll note a rather large discrepancy between home v away records. To offset they could defy that trend as our batting remains trash.

To an extent yes, but it's still a notable improvement on what they have typically sent over. Roach now v Roach last tour is absolute night and day, now that his shoulder actually works again the bloke is world class

His name should literally be changed to Wil Singh-Pucovksi. He literally can't play the short ball. He's worse at it than even Harris. You can't hope to succeed at test level in Australia if you can't cope with it up your snout. Unless he improves that aspect of his game, he should not be picked in a month of Sundays.

"Coach Justin Langer and chief selector Trevor Hohns will sit down on Wednesday to pick their squad for the Gabba"

Why wouldn't they wait until the A game is over? And Vics/Qld only have 1 day to impress. Good thing Vics are bowling so Pattinson and Siddle at least get to show something (not that Siddle will get picked but he is the incumbent)
Seen the scores from that game? It'll well and truly be over by Wednesday night Perth time.

Yeah the gap between Burns and Harris's stats isn't that big when you standardise the wickets they played on. Don't see the selectors being that nuanced though.
