Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Whatever it takes!!!
Was pretty good from what I recall of him as a bowler in IPL. Thought ll be a lock in for ODIs esp since ur selectors seem to wanna rotate the test bowlers in ODIs.

Yeah I'm surprised they're even playing both of Starc and Hazlewood in the middle of 2 Test series. They must really be worried about ratings?

You'd obviously want to play Starc in the ODIs if he's right, but I thought they might've given Hazelwood a break for this series.

But I guess if they want Cummins back around the set up, and they have Starc and Haze, then Faulkner and MMarsh both in the team as well, plus Maxwell and possibly Zampa, Hastings isn't required.

David Warner

I guess Finch and Warner are locked in at openers. Really think Smith is best suited at 3, and after that there's Bailey and a heap of ARs. Probably not room for Khawaja because he has to bat top 3/4

Reckon Hastings is a better ODI bowler than most of the change bowlers they've picked tbh.

Chris Rogers was interesting talking about the two new batsmen - Renshaw getting his head in line with off stump so that he can know when to leave as many balls as possible, having to get through the new ball at the Gabba. While there's a lot of reverse swing in Melbourne, and so Handscomb tries to ensure that he's in a good position to play in front of his front leg, protecting the LBW.
Thought Khawaja left the ball very well in his innings.

Think Renshaw in that respect is also aided with his front foot movement. Even though its a bit shoddy, his front foot always comes down across in front of the off stump as well to align himself. Anything super wide gets hammered with a clean swing and anything over the wicket in line with that pad or leg side gets mauled.

If he brings his back foot to life and works on his weight transfer to fast men on his back foot as well (Was expecting some bouncers from Rabada) he should be right. Hussey might be someone good for him to contact actually. Huss had a similar forward lean but was so nimble on his feet and weight transfer with his trigger movements I can't ever recall it causing him issues.

I am not sure that Finch deserves to be locked in as our opener. He wasn't strong in RSA and 50 over cricket often feels about 30 overs too long for him.

Also for the quicks, I think Australia will definitely rest Starc in one match, Haze in the other, so the 3 NSW quicks won't lineup together unless maybe we have a decider.

I like Bailey as a batsman but I always keep going back to the fact that he was basically our reserve batsman last World Cup and If as Harsh says Khawaja was to bat 4 (he wouldn't though as he'd bat top 3 for sure) the number 5 spot can be left for Head/Marsh/Maxwell/Handscomb.

Khawaja can be a decent no 4 in ODIs. Bailey can be no 5.
Khawaja has to be top 3. Smith can be 4.

Khawaja should be a priority ahead of even Finch and Warner IMO. If you need to bat Warner at 4.

The fact that Khawaja is left out for Finch & Bailey is absurd

If I was picking a first XI I'd go:

Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Bailey
Maxwell
Wade +
MMarsh / White
Faulkner
Hastings
Starc
Hazelwood

I would go:

1 Khawaja 2 Warner 3 Smith 4 Handscomb+ 5 MMarsh 6 Maxwell 7 Head 8 Faulkner 9 Cummins 10 Starc 11 Hazlewood
12 Hastings 13 Zampa 14 Maddinson

Batsman 4 through 7 would be flexible though. There would be situations where Head at 4 would make more sense and other times Maxwell higher too.

If Shaun Marsh is fit for the next test, is he a straight swap for Maddinson? Seems the most logical thing to me.

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
S.Marsh
Wade (although I'd re-instate Nevill)
Starc
Hazelwood
Lyon
Bird/Pattinson
