Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Could be why Lyon is always in the gun.

Is there a cultural disconnect between Boof and his Gen Y players ?
I'm more thinking the issue is between Smith and the older players. There's enough articles about the changes that were made making this "his" team to make me think he didn't have players he wanted. Seems like he may have had influence with Mad dog which makes me question his judgement tbh. Battings folding hard and he wants a power player at 6?

I get where the issue is with Mad Dog, but tbh if you're going to gamble on a young bloke he's the type you'd do it with for that role. I'm gonna go against about 130 years of orthodox cricketing history here and say he will perform better and more consistently at test level than he does at FC level. And I think the way he plays is perfect for number six at this stage. It'll be ugly at times and he'll be one of those blokes we shake our heads at for appraently daft dismissals, but then he'll play a knock which is utterly sublime while everyone else looks inept. The 21st century Doug Walters.

I can only hope he ends up averaging 48 or so.

But I'm seriously excited about these new blokes in general. I hope they get a decent run at things. If they do, it'll be a hell of ride watching them (hopefully) develop into test players.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Mad Dog will be just fine

Not expecting miracles but he is insanely talented so hope he backs himself

We're also dealing with a ****ing low bar here so something to work on for the future would be nice

I've been a Mad Dog fancier since his fc debut and know that if he does get going on his day he'll tear it up.

But with Warner and Smith do we really need another guy who can make batting look ridiculously easy when they get going?

Give me #starch over #intent at the moment. With our propensity for #lolcollapse every second innings or so we need KPat's grim determination to build an innings over Mad Dog's wild adventure.

Wade and the tail ain't any more likely to stop the rot than Nev and the tail were. It will need to come from the top 6. If you ask me to choose a young Shield bat for that job Nic (and Travis) wouldn't be on the list. Conversely if we had a solid top order those two would be prime candidates to liven **** up and turn a start into a big score in quick time Gilchrist style.

I don't know that you do want that at six though. I don't know that you should necessarily pick players on the basis that the batting will collapse every time they play (as devoid of reality as that seems atm). They need to pick a line up on the basis that the blokes in it will be coming in to bat in circumstances where it's slightly functional.

Won't have to wait long for KPat imo. Khawahhhhhja will find a way to lose form and he'll get a gig sooner rather than later. I really hope all three of the new blokes make a go of it and force the selectors into leaving out Darsh on his return from his hitherto unheard of absence through injury. Not because I necessarily dislike the Stoner, just it's good to have blokes take their chances.

I wouldn't have batted KPat at 6 with Handjob in the side tbf.

Agree that we both want to see young guys grab it with both hands. Just that I like to see the opportunity go to those who've done most to deserve it.

The real problem is that 'making a go of it' is subjective. Lyon definitely 'made a go of it' I have nothing but the highest respect for the guy and admire how much he has developed as a player. But that doesn't change the fact that O'Keefe had more than earnt the shot Lyon was given and I've no doubt given the same opportunity would have produced even more. Nothing in either's record since provides any evidence to the contrary.

That's the real fear I have with going Mad over KP. If Maddinson turns up a beautiful ton and averages about 35 will that be 'making a go of it' enough to keep a better player out of the side? Especially with the selector's looking to pick and stick? Look at how long it took for them to work out that MMarsh wasn't working out.

Obviously we can't know the counter-factuals, and perhaps Kurtis would have failed miserably, but records do mean something. The guys with the better records generally have them for a reason. Going for Maddinson was a better call than say going for Arun Funch, but that's not the same thing as being the best selection.

I'm excited to see the new guys bat and hope they can bring some spine to the batting. I get the argument for a flashy 6 but guys like Ponting started at 6 so we could have put KPat there along the same lines.

I'm curious where Darsh stands now but the best thing for the team is the young guys taking there chance and keeping him out.

Whatever it takes!!!
Not very confident on how he will go against Shamsi to be perfectly honest. Does not look comfy at all there. And was getting squared up a bit with the others too. Wonder how he has done facing Starc or Bollinger in Shield cricket.

But yeah, looks to have a good head on his shoulders and if he can keep improving as a batsman, def. long career ahead opening for Aus in tests.

Chris Rogers was interesting talking about the two new batsmen - Renshaw getting his head in line with off stump so that he can know when to leave as many balls as possible, having to get through the new ball at the Gabba. While there's a lot of reverse swing in Melbourne, and so Handscomb tries to ensure that he's in a good position to play in front of his front leg, protecting the LBW.

Since there's no ODI-Selection thread, where else to post about the Hastings ODI omission?

Leading wicket-taker in ODIs for 2016, been batting pretty well too. Not sure about that one.

It'd be nice for some reasoning about that. He's currently playing his first FC game back, so he's fit for the series.
