Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Midwinter

State Captain
Looking at the performances in the last round of Shield games, even tho it may be redundant after the selectors said they would stick with people for a while and they wouldn't change a wining team.

Vic Tremain 20, 4/91 &1/11, Holland 28no, 1/68 &4/25, Harris 18 & 34, Maxwell 6 & 29, 0/28 & 1/9

SA Head 130 & 52, 0/14 & 0/18, Ferguson 5 & 24, Mennie 4/64 & 2/44, Sayers 2/81 & 0/59, Richardson 2/95 & 3/36

NSW Patterson 71 & 26 no, Henriques 115, 1/19 & 0/13, Neville (wktk) 179no, 5 catches

Tas Faulkner 6 & 100no, 2/35

WA - Bancroft made a century, Cartwright 84 & 41, Marsh 14 & 0, 2/72 & 4/38

Qld Burns 68 & 38, Hartley (wktk) 33 & 53 no, Labuschagne 79 & 35, 0/30 & 0/26

Patterson still looking good, Harris and Bancroft in the runs
Mennie steady as always

Burns made runs as did Neville
Marsh took wickets but no runs
Head did his chances no harm,

Cartwright continues to make runs and is looking good for the future

HTH

If Shaun Marsh is fit for the next test, is he a straight swap for Maddinson? Seems the most logical thing to me.

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
S.Marsh
Wade (although I'd re-instate Nevill)
Starc
Hazelwood
Lyon
Bird/Pattinson
What is the reasoning behind batting Handscomb ahead of Marsh? I don't really have an issue with the Victorian at 5 but I just can't see Marsh being told to not only give up his opening spot, but also be pushed all the way down to 6. I would have thought that Handscomb was a more natural stroke maker who doesn't take as long to get going and since the team is full of LH bats, it wouldn't be the worst option to split up the 2 right hand bats slightly. Also when you consider the age and experience of the pair and I think Marsh is 5, Handscomb 6 in that lineup.

Well yeah Marsh at 5 and Handscomb at 6 is obviously what they'd go with if the 2 played together and Renshaw stayed at the top

TBH I'd probably put Marsh at 4, Smith and 5 and Handscomb at 6, but I didnt overthink the order in that post, just replaced Maddinson with Marsh.

Yeah while there would be nothing really wrong with this order IMO, no way is Smith sliding down

I don't see any real reason for Smith not to go to 5. He's made runs everywhere in the order and doesn't seem to be a guy who cares where he bats, or who is better suited to one position or another.

lol

He'd be fine at 5 IMO, but it's not going to happen

Yeah unless your Michael Clarke and you're scientifically proven to be **** at any other place than 5 the cap'n batsman shouldn't be that low, especially one with as much ability as our talented idiot captain.

It's not about his preferences, it's about what the team needs. You want your best bats scoring the hardest runs and in terms of wainning games, he's wasted that low.

Well, Clarke, Waugh and Border all spent plenty of time batting at 5/6.

Actually feel like he provides some nice stability at 5, esp with a few kids in the team
