Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Think Australia are shaping up well for the India tour tbh. With Smith, Handscomb, S Marsh and with Warner being unpredictable, they have a decent enough nucleus to get a lot of runs, esp. if the tracks remain flat like they did against England. And with Starc being Starc and Haze supporting him with a couple of spinners doing their bit and with Cartwright being as good as he seems to be from posters here, they should give very tough fight to India in India. Will be a tough series and a good test for India which seemed so unlikely when they were getting bundled out by Philander and Co.
I'll be surprised if we dont lose by at least 3-nil

Yeah, we'll struggle big time to save a test let alone win any. The last time we even drew a test in Asia was the 2011 Sri Lankan tour, and the last time we won a test in India was 2008. We're 13-1-4 in Asia in the last 10 years. Would be a huge shock for us to bag even 1 win against an Indian side that is in murderous form in home conditions.

One of the curious things to come out of the scheduling is that Australia plays SL in T20s at home while the test side heads off to India. I suppose it's unavoidable to an extent, but I wonder which T20 specialist spinner can tweak their way into a test call up when SOK inevitably breaks a fingernail in the first tour match and has to come home?

Just quietly thinking the same thing, though I think we'll be well beaten this time. Apart from Smith and Warner we have some hope that Handscomb will play well against spin. Though I'm not a fan you'd have to pick Marsh in India. If Renshaw can show ability against spin then we have potentially 5 batsman who could fight in Indian conditions. Much better than recent tours.

I kind of see this series coming up as a tour where we will hopefully improve and maybe be a threat next time. However while our batting is unexpectedly showing some hope I can't see where our spinners will be anywhere near competitive to win us the series. Hell a match would be good.

Whilst SOK deserves a spot through sheer weight of numbers, I would not be all that upset to see Agar get a gig as I have a feeling that he will turn out to be the better test match bowler

Wades error list:
Adelaide: Renshaw drop, Renshaw half volley, seem to recall an actual drop also
Gabba: stumping, leg side catch, didnt see all the play

Feel free to add. We could start an error tracker thread.

Won't matter he plays till he scores which will then be used as proof of selection.

If our batting pans out things could get interesting if Pattinson is fit and in form. While conditions won't favour pace he produced a good spell last time and Starc did well in Sri Lanka. Hazlewood might not be effective but if those two are threatening all he needs to do is keep things tight and wait for an error. O'Keefe as the spinner (can't be worse than Lyon IMO) and we might be able to nab a test.

Will be interesting to see if/how we fit S Marsh into the side for the Indian tour. I reckon he's a must for those conditions and would be tempted to drop Khawaja.

Warner
Renshaw
S Marsh
Smith
Handscomb
Cartwright/Maxwell (maybe even Head but we've got enough left handers for Ashwin already)
Nevill +
O'Keefe
Starc
Pattinson (if fit) Bird/Lyon otherwise
Hazlewood

Who are your spin options besides Lyon?
O'Keefe, Holland, Agar probably the main three as things stand.

Some people like Zampa, but he's not good enough with the red ball AFAIC. Swepson might be an option in the future, but probably not now.

I remember Warne talking-up Zampa. Agar is more famous for his 98 at Trent Bridge batting at 11.

Woodhill, a man who has spent a lot of time in India coaching cricket, is pumping the **** out of Zampa. He does bowl with a lot of sidespin, which might make him harder to play there than what he is in Australia, where most of the balls slide straight on.

Think O'Keefe will get first crack in India, simply because he doesn't bowl with as much overspin as the others, which ensures that the LBW option is in play far more often. And it would also allow them to play Maxwell at 6 - they don't want to play two off-spinners as the two spin options.

uh I think you mean it allows them to play Maxwell at 7.

i think they should probably do sok and holland from the get go but i doubt they will.

They are still interested in Maxwell? I feel the reason Cartwright has been drafted in for these two tests shows the selectors are drifting towards the 3rd seamer being the all rounder than one of the spinners, right?
