Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

The Battlers Prince

The form he's in he could probably do that no worries. The batting is too fragile yet to warrant it IMO but I'd love to see it.
A player like Faulkner or MMarsh can probably handle 7 better anyhow if we change our team make up slightly

I don't see any real reason for Smith not to go to 5. He's made runs everywhere in the order and doesn't seem to be a guy who cares where he bats, or who is better suited to one position or another.

He probably could, it's just he can't catch.
When he was dropped he deserved to be because he was a rubbish keeper. His improvement with the gloves is marginal but the selectors may be kidding themselves he's up to it now. He's got a massive job ahead if they pick him for India

We've just mothballed the 5 bowler team bcos we need as many runs as we can get. So can't see Faulkner going to six just to accommodate Cummins. Especially in DN conditions where run getting is harder and the side we are playing isn't as strong in batting as the one Australia just beat.

I dont even think that it is clear that K-Pat was/is next in line.

I get the feeling that Head must have been considered since you'd have to say he is similar to Maddo or he has attributes that exceed such as being a current ODI player, leadership expierence, a better spinner, used to Adelaide Oval.

The weird part of Trav Head's game is ive heard people complain he often makes low scores and heard that he gets out in the 90s heaps too. I think that he makes lots of scores around 35..

He must literally go 4, 92, 35 on repeat.
The more and more I think about Maddinson over Head the more I think it was the wrong call. This could actually be a problem if the selectors show too much faith for the new Test guys after coping criticism for dropping Ferguson (who can't make any runs for SACA) so quickly.

The only justification I have is that Head did not set the world on fire for Australia and the selection panel wanted him to prove himself a bit more before throwing him in. Renshaw is far less experienced though so hmm.

The Head talk is on the back of 2 1 day 50s right. He needs better Shield stats. But so does Mad dog. KPat would have been my choice.

Head being ahead of Maxwell in the discussion for the Test side makes no sense whatsoever.

Well no, I said it before his two ODI knocks. I like K.Part too, but i feel like at 6 it is a very close decision. If the only spot in the Test team was at say 3, that would help the NSW bat more.

I guess I don't buy into the need for icing at 6. Our top order needs as much cake as possible till they prove otherwise. As such the discussion around which aggressive 6 interests me less. I just get annoyed by the assumption that the format the runs were scored in doesn't matter. I'm not saying your doing this but the media and M Waugh do.

I have seen literally nothing from Head that suggests he is a test player in waiting

No doubt he has a good eye but his technique is all over the place and if the Kiwis could catch/ball hadnt lobbed between fieldsmen, his place in the odi team would be in danger

I agree with others that say that I can imagine Head being good enough at Test level and surpassing his FC records quite easily - Vaughan/Trescothick style.
