Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Maddinson's form barely keeps him in the Bl00s side. FFS. I ranted for years that Smarsh was utterly undeserving of a Test cap. I'm actually disgusted by this call. And Mad Dog is a NSW player. That tells you all you need to know about this call.

The gimps that came up with this side should be dead set shot. A few weeks of torture before execution probably wouldn't be excessive. Where's Negan and Lucille when you need em?

i think i'd probably more upset with mad dog's selection if they had kept Burns (ie if he was the second of two batting changes).

Mad dog is the combination of the part time bowling and the T-20 reputation. Has to be.

What's particularly interesting about this is that I think he's bowled worse the last couple of months than he ever has before in Test cricket, and his record is still much better under Nevill.

I'd started thinking that there might not be any point in playing Lyon while Smith was captain.. adding Wade into the mix just makes it even worse.

So Wade is getting the benefit of the doubt around his Test average over recent evidence despite the fact that was 3 years ago.

Yeah, considering he has, what, 2@120 so far in this summer, I'm amazed the difference is that large.

OK. Deep breaths taken:

Handscomb and Renshaw - no arguments. Young guys with goodish records stand up and make maximum impact when the selectors are obviously ready to pick the best young guys with goodish records. Easy picks. Strengthen's side.

Sayers - fair enough. Obvious conclusion is that the idiots mistook Mennie for him last test. No other conclusion for his selection can be made. A glaring error corrected. Strengthens side.

Lyon retained - SOK's injury probably saved his butt. Would be no surprise to see him carrying drinks in Adelaide. If not must surely be under immense pressure. At least the dopes didn't go for Holland or Zampa. Neutral pick.

Wade - Nev wasn't making enough runs to make his space secure, so they'd be looking at options. Wade is an option. Therefore Wade. In at least as dire form with the bat as Nev. At best a neutral pick. Looks better if Lyon is 12th man.

Maddinson - WTAF? Essentially this test's Mennie selection. They knew they wanted the young left hand middle order bat from NSW. Just mixed up which one. Ferg has been averaging 50+ the last 3 seasons and because he had a tough debut he gets axed for Mad Dog? Hanging with Ferg or going with KPat would both have been defensible selections. Maddinson? Not even close to a serious call.

bad call. they're almost opposite selections. Mennie's selection rewarded performance, despite the fact that Australia cricket over the past 5 years has frequently picked fast bowlers based on the eye test, regardless of stats. like Hastings (against SA too!), this selection was illogical based on them turning their backs on that recent successful history. Mad Dog, as shown above, does not have performance to reward. This is all about #intent, aggression and gut feel.

Maddinson's place is a reward for for his Matador Cup performances, where he made runs and bowled a bit.

We know Mark Waugh was there watching him.

And he is from NSW

Squad is for 1 test so anyone who fails should know they could be immediately ejected like Ferg.

ferguson almost isn't a dropping so much as a correction to a selection mistake

gonna need to hear Rensahw speak before any judgement is made there

Don't think Nevill dropping can be a surprise. You can't bat that poorly as a WK nowadays and keep your place. Heard great things about Patterson so looking forward to watching him.

Mennie - easy to think of several players with far more to reward and far more likely to succeed at the next level.
Maddinson - easy to think of several players with far more to reward and far more likely to succeed at the next level.

Same-same.

The worst thing is that they have indicated 'pick and stick'. That's fair enough if you've made the right calls. If you've ****ed it up (and they have) then you are stuck with backing a guy you never should have backed in the first place and denying a chance to the better options you overlooked. We know how this song goes. Maddinson will probably come out and bang a run a ball ton on debut and then revert to his usual disappointments. Just when the selector's patience is just starting to wear out he'll bang another ton and buy himself another summer which he will promptly underperform in again.

I've been crossing my fingers on Mad Dog finally coming good for years. I'd love him to prove me wrong and become a ten year test player. But he won't.
