True, but I did make this call about a year ago, where guys like James Pattison, Mitchell Starc, Jon Holland, Usman Khawaja, Moises Henriques, Alaister Mcdermott were hyped up just as much.
Not that impressive.

You say that a year ago you picked out Marsh, Hazlewood and Hughes to be stars? That makes you what, no different to anyone else on this forum or any half respecting journalist who knew the same thing.

The other names you mentioned have hardly gone backwards (maybe Holland) in further progressing to becoming members of the Australian team.

An impressive call would be Steve O'Keefe to make the A team (called 1 year ago), I would applaud that.

Pretty easy call to make a year ago (before you were a member of the forum ), unless...

I had a look at last year stats and apart from Hastings, I can't see another fit seamer who was that far ahead. Geeves maybe a tad unlucky.

Looking forward to this series now and I'm hoping that the wickets up at the gold coast or wherever the games are being played aren't total flat tracks, George to carve up.

Hazelwood is out, so who will be his replacement for both the OD and FC squads?

Copeland? Unless Cutting or Hastings have recovered of course.

From memory, he got stress fractures in his back, so he'd be going through rehab for most of winter I'd say.

Locate UsTWO BULLS IN AIS SIDE

Thursday 10 June 2010

Explosive keeper-batsman Ben Dunk and highly-rated all-rounder Jason Floros have been named in the AIS side to play Sri Lanka A in a three-day game at Allan Border Field, starting on Sunday.

The match is a warm-up for the Sri Lankans for the first unofficial Test against Australia A the following week.

Dunk made a huge impression during the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, where he opened at times and later played a valuable role down the order.

His blazing 70 not out in the preliminary final gave the XXXX GOLD Bulls a total to defend, and his 142 runs were the second most by a Queenslander in 2009-10.

Dunk dropped back to Grade ranks following gloveman Chris Hartley’s return from injury and continued to impress in the Futures League competition, where he was the State’s leading runscorer.

Floros has been on the national selectors’ radar for the last 12 months following a string of eye-catching performances at Under 19 level.

He captained the national under 19s on occasions and scored a brilliant 96 against South Africa during the recent World Cup, which Australia went on to win.

Floros was also the player of the championships at the national under 19 titles, where he scored back-to-back centuries and was the leading runscorer.

A tidy off-spinner, he will be pushing for XXXX GOLD Bulls selection at some stage next season.

The Queensland duo are joined in the AIS team by a number of players who will suit up for Australia A in the first unofficial Test at AB Field from 18 June.

Pacemen Peter George, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc.

New South Welshmen Steven O’Keefe and Usman Khawaja are also in the 14-man squad, with every player expected to get an opportunity at some stage during the game.

The AIS side is:

Sean Abbott (NSW)

Nathan Brain (NSW)

Ryan Carters (VIC)

Ben Dunk (QLD)

Jason Floros (QLD)

Peter George (SA)**

Nic Maddinson (NSW)

Glenn Maxwell (VIC)

Mitchell Starc (NSW)**

Josh Hazlewood (NSW)**

Usman Khawaja (NSW)**

Steve O’Keefe (NSW)**

James Pattinson (VIC)**

Luke Pomersbach (WA)

** denotes players who are also Australia A squad members

Looks like they drafted James Pattinson into the 4 day squad following Hazelwood's absence.

AIS start strongly against Sri Lanka
14 June, 2010

James Pattinson in action against Sri Lanka A The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) side has started well against Sri Lanka A after the opening two days of play in the tour match at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

The tourists are in town as part of the Australia A Series which gets underway later in the week and are warming up with a match against the Scholars.

After winning the toss yesterday, AIS skipper Ben Dunk elected to field and it proved a wise decision as the hosts got through Sri Lanka for 224.

Peter George was the pick of the bowlers, the South Australian picked up 3-34 while Mitchell Starc also picked up 2-26.

Sri Lanka started promisingly, scoring at four an over they moved to 3-152 before George got together with spinner Steve O'Keefe (1-55) to put the stops on.

Other solid contributions came from Sean Abbott (2-26) and Nathan Brain (2-33).

The hosts were left with a period to bat before stumps and finished at 2-42 one day one.

Day two started to get away from the AIS after they slumped to 7-119 before Luke Pomersback (58 not out) joined Abbott (49) to rescue the innings with a 91-run partnership.

Dunk then declared the innings at 9-238 and the Scholars quickly got stuck into the visitors who were 2-71 late on day two.

FLOROS PLAYS PART

Wednesday 16 June 2010

Dashing middle order batsman Jason Floros smacked a quickfire 42 to help the AIS to a tight one-wicket victory over the visiting Sri Lanka A team in their three-day match at Allan Border Field yesterday.

Floros spanked two sixes and four fours in his 49-ball innings before being stumped for the second time in the match. He made 15 off 24 balls in the first innings.

Australia were cruising at 3-163 chasing 234 for victory but a flurry of wickets saw them scrape home courtesy of Glenn Maxwell’s 18 not out.

Fellow XXXX GOLD Bulls squad member Ben Dunk was elevated to opener for the run chase and made 13 off 13 balls before being caught.

Nic Maddinson (57 off 38 balls) and Luke Pomersbach (63 off 65) had the AIS reach 100 in just 13 overs.

Floros bowled just the three overs in the first innings for 0-11, and took 1-41 off seven overs in the second.

The match was a warm-up for the Sri Lankans for their first unofficial Test against Australia A at Allan Border Field starting Friday.

Australia are set to host a Zimbabwean touring team next year for the first time since 2003, following a meeting between Cricket Australia and the strife-torn country's sports minister, David Coltart.

In keeping with Zimbabwe's plans for gradual re-engagement with the cricket community, any series will be played between "A" teams from the two countries. This still represents a major step for the African nation after years of sanctions and international condemnation.

The Zimbabwe tour, likely to take place in mid-2011 at a time once slated for Test matches between the two countries, would also be the first step in a reciprocal agreement that would also see an Australia A side play matches in Zimbabwe.

"There is a spot in 2011, but the trouble is that slot was for two Tests in Australia and even though Zimbabwe wants to re-commence playing Test cricket next year, there's a recognition that to throw this young team into the Test arena against Australia at this stage would be counter-productive," Coltart told AAP.

"We've discussed other means of utilising that slot but with more appropriate opposition.

"It's very much tentative at this stage.

"(An A series) is what the discussions are centring on, the exchange of A teams rather than at Test level.

"We've discussed an exchange of tours, in other words (tours) both ways."

Coltart is due to meet with Foreign Minister Stephen Smith in Canberra on Thursday, and expects a similarly fruitful dialogue.

Smith told Federal Parliament in March that he favoured further engagement with areas of Zimbabwe life that were showing progress, while the Department of Foreign Affairs has made it clear there will be no diplomatic opposition to the resumption of formal cricket contact.

"I've had a number of very constructive meetings with the Australian ambassador to Zimbabwe, John Courtney, and he's certainly been very sympathetic to my arguments and I know his view reflects Canberra's view, so I don't anticipate difficult meetings tomorrow," said Coltart.

International NewsBack to International news Preparations begin in Brisbane ahead of Sri Lankan tour
Thursday, 17 June 2010With the tour of Sri Lanka getting closer by the day, seven BLACKCAPS have taken the opportunity to adapt to sub-continent conditions and will be spending the next two weeks in Brisbane.

The seven include Kane Williamson, BJ Watling, Daniel Flynn, Daryl Tuffey, Grant Elliott, Andy McKay and Brent Arnel, who weren’t part of the side to play in the West Indies recently. Some of the players are returning from injury while others, such as Kane Williamson haven’t experienced Sri Lankan conditions.

The two week training camp is overseen by New Zealand Cricket performance director Roger Mortimer, who will be putting each player through their paces to ensure they are fit and ready to be selected for the tour. “We have selected a squad of 20 to prepare for Sri Lanka in August,” he said. “They need to get outdoors, so Brisbane is ideal given the facilities, bowlers and temperature.”

Bowling is the main focus while in Brisbane. The pitches in the sub-continent are traditionally low, and the players need to prepare accordingly. “They are using this as part of their preparation for the upcoming tours of Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh, with a special focus on playing spin,” he said. “It is a great chance to get outdoors as practising indoors just isn’t the same.”

Although the players have been chosen in the wider squad, they are still vying for a spot in the final touring squad which will be named during the next month. Mortimer said the players are focusing hard on reaching that selection goal. “It’s tough for the selectors to make decisions purely on preparation, outside of playing, but as we know the better the players prepare, the better they will play,” he said. “So it all helps in terms of the direction being taken now, which is turn up to play knowing you have done everything you could to play at the very highest level.”

Ben Hilfenhaus' bowling is the most important thing for Australia in this match but it was his batting that dug the A team out of a hole on the opening day against Sri Lanka A in Brisbane. The hosts were 7 for 103 when Hilfenhaus, who has been out since last year with a knee tendon problem, arrived to partner Steve O'Keefe and lift them to a more competitive 208.

Sachithra Senanayake, the offspinner, completed a stunning day when he ended the 105-run partnership and also finished the innings to claim 8 for 70. The figures were his best in a first-class game and he started the damage by removing the first six batsmen as the hosts slipped to 6 for 92. Senanayake's hopes for all 10 wickets were ended by Dammika Prasad, who removed Peter Forrest (12) on the way to 2 for 21.

O'Keefe was knocked over by Senanayake for an innings-high 61 while Hilfenhaus fell to Prasad for a career-best 42. Sri Lanka finished at 1 for 17, with Hilfenhaus bowling two overs and O'Keefe taking the wicket of Tharanga Paranavitana for 3.

Steve O'Keefe's impressive game for Australia A continued as he took seven wickets before his side gained a 305-run lead with two days to play against Sri Lanka A. O'Keefe, the New South Wales left-arm orthodox spinner, scored 61 at Allan Border Field on Friday and backed up with a memorable haul as the visitors were dismissed for 103 before lunch.

That gave Australia a 105-run advantage and they increased the comfort of their position by reaching 6 for 200 at stumps. George Bailey, the captain, finished unbeaten on 57 and O'Keefe was 28 not out, while Michael Klinger (32), Usman Khawaja (30) and Andrew McDonald (21) got starts. Dammika Prasad was the leading bowler with 3 for 34 while the offspinner Sachithra Senanayake, who took the new ball, had Ed Cowan lbw for 9.

O'Keefe, who has played six first-class games, was as difficult to conquer as Senanayake was on the opening day when he captured 8 for 70. O'Keefe delivered 18 overs while taking 7 for 35 in an outstanding performance mixing control and destruction.

Replying to Australia A's 208, the Sri Lankans were in a reasonable position at 4 for 72 before losing their last six wickets for 31. O'Keefe grabbed four of those to add to his dismissals of Lahiru Thirimanne, the top scorer with 20, and Dinesh Chandimal (15) at the start of the day.
