Inaugural WACA Development Squad for 2010-11

28/05/2010

The Western Australian Cricket Association has announced the formation of a Development Squad for the 2010-11 season.

The objective of selecting a Development Squad is to assist players to bridge the gap between under-age representative cricket to the WACA District competition and in turn to interstate ranks.

23 players have been invited to join the inaugural list, which contains a mixture of ex-Warriors squad members, consistent performers in the Retravision Shield and promising under-age players.

The Development Squad will work in an organised structure, training regularly with the Retravision Warriors team as well as playing games against representative sides such as the WA Indigenous XI and Country XI.

The group will be overseen by new Warriors Assistant Coach Lachlan Stevens and also have access to specialised coaches, including a Development Coach who will be appointed in due course.

All players will be invited to join the Retravision Warriors 2010-11 squad at a camp to mark the commencement of pre-season training next month.

Mangan is a ripping bloke. Interesting to see "Cameron Huckett (University)" there. Didn't know that he was heading that way; former Aus U/19 swing bowler from Victoria. Also a great bloke, loves a can.

AUSTRALIA may have a new state-based one-day competition as soon as next summer.

The stale limited overs interstate tournament could be split into two different events at opposite ends of the season.

The new competition to kick off the summer would be completely different, with matches of either two 25-over innings each or a reduction from 50 to 40 overs.

At the end of the summer a traditional 50 overs a side Ford Ranger Cup would be played as part of Australia's preparation for the World Cup on the sub-continent next March and April.

Each state would play five matches in each new competition, to replace the 10-match home and away rounds in the current Ford Ranger Cup, which drags out across most of the summer with little context.

There will be a push at this month's Cricket Australia board meeting to try to have the changes introduced next season without harming Australia's chances at the 50-over World Cup.

There is a strong consensus that something must be done with the Ford Ranger Cup, which struggles to draw crowds and has become a poor cousin of the exploding Twenty20 Big Bash.

The options are being discussed at a wide-ranging CA seminar, which began on the Gold Coast yesterday. Chief executive James Sutherland will give the keynote address today.

CA's general manager of cricket marketing services Mike McKenna has put together an extensive investigation into various aspects of one-day cricket.

"We've done a lot of research. There is a lot of work underway reviewing the one-day format," a CA spokesman told The Australian last night.

"There is a public appetite for one-day cricket but there is some confusion about how it's positioned and with a view that it needs some sort of refreshing.

"Michael is talking about a number of theoretical options and getting feedback on them.

"He is hoping to finalise that feedback and take specific recommendations to the board meeting later this month.

"He won't be commenting publicly on what those recommendations might be."

England and South Africa have both dropped their domestic 50-over formats for 40-over options.

However this appears to have mixed support in Australia while the World Cup remains a 50-over tournament.

More appealing appears to be the idea of playing domestic 50-over matches with two innings, although there is even some disagreement over how that should be played.

Some favour restoring all 10 wickets for the second 25-over innings.

However, others believe this is too far removed from the now traditional 50-over format and that teams should simply pick up the score from their first 25 overs when they begin their second innings, including the number of wickets lost.

THE Australian cricket team could be heading towards a radical shakeup with totally different Test and Twenty20 sides playing at the same time in different parts of the globe.

The seismic shift with more players becoming Twenty20 specialists is gathering steam with Cricket Australia supremo James Sutherland flagging the possibility of the new Australian team structures.

"While hosting Tests here, Australia could have its Twenty20 team touring somewhere else," Sutherland told a cricket seminar on the Gold Coast yesterday.

"As more Twenty20 cricket is played there are clearly opportunities for players to choose to be specialists.

"Taking it through to its natural extension, if you have a specialist team then why can't you have a specialist Twenty20 team and a specialist Test team (playing) at the same time?

"In rugby union for example, the ARU has a Sevens team and a Wallabies team. I don't see it as a huge amount of difference to that.

"I don't think its inconceivable.

"It is difficult not to see a generation of players coming through with an eye to becoming Twenty20 specialists." Australia was initially slow out of the starting blocks to embrace T20 cricket but Sutherland's comments show it now realises the wide-ranging ramifications of the colourful, sawn-off format.

Behind the scenes, CA is already making a move towards a separate ranking of T20 players when chief selector Andrew Hilditch sits down to formulate contracts for Australia's top 25 cricket stars. Australia's Test and T20 teams already have a different look. However there are several players - Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, Brad Haddin and Mike Hussey - who play both formats.

Australia has improved significantly in Twenty20 cricket - making the final of the recent T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. However it has never won a major tournament and its record of 21 wins from 36 starts needs improvement. Any move towards a stand-alone Twenty20 team would require a major overhaul - for starters Australia would need to find a new T20 captain as Clarke is the Test vice-captain.

However, Greg Chappell is not convinced that future players should focus solely on becoming T20 specialists without a fall-back position if they are unable to succeed in 20-over cricket.

Meanwhile, the domestic 50-over competition could be revamped with matches of either two 25-over innings each or a reduction from 50 to 40 overs. The Ford Ranger Cup has been struggling to draw crowds and CA has conducted an internal review on the future of 50-over cricket headed by marketing guru Mike McKenna. There could be a push at this month's CA board meeting to tinker with the domestic 50-over format next season.

GOLD COAST INTEREST IN T20 FRANCHISE

Tuesday 1 June 2010

The Gold Coast is the latest regional centre to put up its hand for a franchise in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.

With Cricket Australia bosses holding a forum on the Gold Coast to discuss the future direction of the game, it was timely that mayor Ron Clarke pushed forward his city’s credentials.

The brand new oval stadium at Carrara, which will host the Gold Coast FC in the AFL next year, will be readily-able to cater for a cricket co-tenant.

“Our weather is fabulous and with the new AFL facility it would be a perfect place to have a drop-in pitch and host a cricket team,” Clarke told The Courier-Mail today.

“We would certainly welcome a team on the Gold Coast.

“Andrew Symonds is a local boy and I’m sure he would love to play for the Gold Coast.”

While Clarke spruiked his region, Geelong and Newcastle appear to be far more advanced in their push for franchises.

Cricket Australia has stated their interested in expanding the competition to eight teams when the new KFC Twenty20 Big Bash begins in 18 to 24 months’ time.

Townsville has also been mooted as a possible Queensland location but there has been little movement – at least publicly – in the region.

Cooper, Kruger in line to make ODI debuts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom Cooper and Brad Kruger may be set to make their ODI debut for The Netherlands against Scotland in Rotterdam on 15 July, having been included in the selectors’ 13-man squad for the one-off game.

Cooper has played in all six Clydesdale Bank 40 League matches this season, while Kruger came into the side for the games against Derbyshire and Northamptonshire last weekend.

The team to play Scotland will also be strengthened by the availability of Ryan ten Doeschate and Alexei Kervezee, since neither player’s county is involved in a game that day. The result is that the Dutch will be at virtually full strength for the Rotterdam match.

Neither is available, however, for the four-day Intercontinental Cup fixture in Deventer, which starts on 10 June. And with Cooper and Kruger ineligible for the Cup match under ICC regulations and Atse Buurman and Bas Zuiderent also unavailable, it will be significantly different side which takes the field at Het Schootsveld.

Bart Schilperoord comes in as wicketkeeper, while Wesley Barresi will slot into the top order; both made their first-class debuts against Canada last season. Tim Gruijters has also be named, and is likely to play as a specialist batsman, given that the only others are Barresi, Tom de Grooth and Eric Szwarczynski.

The seam attack will be reinforced by the addition of Maurits Jonkman and Ruud Nijman – this may well be the match in which the Jonkman twins make their long-awaited first appearance in the senior national side for the first time. Whether Nijman also plays, along with Mudassar Bukhari, may depend on whether the Dutch decide to go into the game with the two spinners, Seelaar and Kashif.

The unavailability of senior players has been a major factor in the disappointing Dutch record in the Intercontinental Cup, and with just 15 points from three matches in the current campaign they are effectively out of the running for a place in the final. This might have given the selectors an opportunity for experimentation, but in all honesty there are precious few players staking a claim for a run in the side.

The ODI record is much better, and with Kervezee, Ten Doeschate and Cooper all in the team The Netherlands will go into the Rotterdam game with confidence.

The full squads are:
Intercontinental Cup (Deventer, 10-13 June): Peter Borren (captain), Wesley Barresi (both VRA), Mudassar Bukhari (ACC), Tom de Grooth, Mark Jonkman, Maurits Jonkman (all HCC), Muhammad Kashif (West of Scotland), Ruud Nijman, Bart Schilperoord, Pieter Seelaar (all Hermes-DVS), Tim Gruijters (Warwickshire Academy) and Eric Szwarczynski (VRA).
ODI (Rotterdam, 15 June): Borren (captain), Bukhari, Atse Buurman, Tom Cooper (both VRA), Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex), De Grooth, Mark Jonkman, Kashif, Alexei Kervezee (Worcestershire), Bradley Kruger (Bradford/Leeds UCCE), Seelaar, Szwarczynski, and Bas Zuiderent (VOC).

I would much rather see Hartley instead of Ronchi in the A side. Seems like a just reward after carrying QLD with the bat last season and being the best pure glovesman in the country.

Mathew Wade to picked in the A side instead of Ronchi or Hartley tbh. Sad about Marsh aswell, wonder who will be his replacement.
