Australian Off-Season Thread (2010)

Stripped back, he's a med-fast workhorse who nibbles the ball a bit either way and swings it when conditions suit. The games I've seen him bowl, he's bowled very, very well but he definitely needs a longer run before being considered for anything higher. Put it this way, there's nothing brilliant about him which demands higher selection.
This.

Corey and Andre in 'thinking along the same lines about a cricketer' shock.

I did make it clear that he has been outstanding in his career thus far. But it's 5 first class games old, so as outstanding as he has been, for him to get picked would have been a joke - and very unlike the Australian selectors.

How do you reckon Starc and Copeland compare to a fit Burt ****ley?
Reckon ****ley is and will be the pick of the 3, to be honest. Just has that something about him. Bowls a really heavy ball.

Not much to crow about with the bat, though.

Fools rarely differ or something.

In fairness, Adam Dale wasn't much to look at when he kicked off his FC career and contrary to what the doomsdayers were saying all along, after a good start, he just kept taking wickets, played a bunch of ODI's and (in my view) too few Tests for a bloke who bowled as well as he did. Copeland might prove to be in a similar vein. Something to be said for a bloke who just knows how to get blokes out.

Yep - Dale is the exact bowler that springs to mind when I think of Copeland. He's only about that pace but does have a knack of getting blokes out.

A bowler like that though tends to always need to do more than others to get picked because of their 'unremarkableness', for want of a better term.

Tbf, I'm in love with Copeland, so my posts on him atm are likely to be very biased.

Probably going to be meeting him tomorrow and training with him and my brother
Haha, so you keep mentioning. Only had the one session with him, but I was mainly checking him out. Fwiw, oneupsmanship only ever ends in tears on CricketWeb. ;)

Copeland has been the find of the year, his numbers are just staggering for his 1st season, doubt he'll ever play for Australia though.

Any of you guys reckon the Australia A series will be televised on fox sports or setana or whatever? It would be awsome if so. Might chuck foxsports an email trying to convince them to broadcast it, Blewett, Waugh, Border and all the foxsports guys can commentate.

Australia A games are so rarely televised. Unlikely.

Gahhhhhhhhhh **** you Cricket Australia and your incompetency and hypocricy with your 'we take T20 seriously' bull**** whilst still giving the captaincy to a bloke who'd struggle to crack his state team in the format. Worst ****ing group of selectors.

Sigh...

In other news:
The omissions of Nathan Rimmington,Ben Cutting, and Michael Klinger from the Aus A 50 over side is quite a suprise.Overall not too bad a fifty over squad but Haberfield and Drew I don't think should be there or Usman since he hasn't done anything in the format yet (though I certainly wouldn't rule him out in the future since he looks like a very solid batsman) .The four day squad is very good though (other than cutting's omission).

When do they announce the test squad to play Pakistan?

Seems strange they announced 4 squads the other day and not that one.Are they waiting on Hilfenhaus fitness or somebody else or is it just an excuse to get another slap up meal and plenty of beer down their necks?

Cricket Australia has confirmed an expanded KFC Twenty20 Big Bash for next summer, with the states to play an extra match each in the group stage.

Having started with just seven matches in its inaugural season in 2005-06, when the Bushrangers beat both the Redbacks and Warriors in the group stage and then thumped the Blues in the final, this summer's competition will comprise 20 matches.

Each team will play six matches, three each at home and on the road, before the top team earns the right to host the final and the teams that finish second and third on the table go head-to-head for the other spot in the decider and in the lucrative Twenty20 Champions League of 2011.

The competition gets underway at the WACA Ground on December 30 when Western Australia hosts Tasmania, while defending champion and four-time winner Victoria starts against Queensland at the MCG on January 2 and South Australia plays New South Wales on January 4 at Adelaide Oval.

The preliminary final will be played on February 1 while the final will be held on Saturday, February 5 unless WA earns a home decider - in which case it will be held 24 hours earlier - because the WACA Ground will host a one-day international between Australia and England on February 6.

Dwayne Bravo will be back for the Bushrangers, as will Chris Gayle for the Warriors with his fellow West Indian Kemar Roach joining him and Kieron Pollard will return for the Redbacks while the Blues will welcome big-hitting Sri Lanka Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland is looking forward to another exciting summer, not least because he hopes to see more local players push their cases for international selection as Steve Smith, Dan Christian and Travis Birt did in 2009-10.

"We couldn't have asked for any more from last year's competition," said Sutherland, who also confirmed that Fox Sports will show every match live.

"The evenness and quality of matches, as well as the performances of the Australian and international players, were major reasons so many people watched it at grounds or at home on television."

"While the international imports had a huge impact last season, what was even more exciting was the performance of the uncapped Australian talent which catapulted them into the spotlight of national selection."

"A spot in the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 is again a lucrative incentive for the top two teams and despite Victoria setting the standard in world domestic Twenty20 cricket over the past five years, one of the biggest attractions of the competition is that it's impossible to predict who will contest the final in early February."

"If last year is any indication, fans can look forward to another season of high-energy, closely-fought Twenty20 cricket."

"Combined with the battle for the Ashes, it shapes as a bumper summer for Australian cricket."
