Australian Off Season 2017

Really, really glad about Stanlake.

He really, really, so earned that contract in his dazzling performances this summer. Hard work really does pay off.
Yep his 1/110 from 16 overs of white ball Cricket for Australia and his 0 Shield matches make him an automatic choice really. Originally I thought the 20 man group was fast bowler heavy but he is just one of 6 quicks.

Hohns did say this though:
"Billy has picked up the last spot on the contract list for the coming season. We see him as a player of immense talent and a great option for Australia in the future. We want to be able to monitor his progress in the coming 12 months, not dissimilar to what we have done with Pat Cummins in the past."

If I was picking a 20 man contract list with different pay tiers I would go:

Smith Starc Hazlewood Warner (A)
Cummins Wade Maxwell Lyon (B)
Handscomb Renshaw Finch Head Khawaja Pattinson Faulkner Zampa MMarsh (C)
Henriques Bird Hastings (C-)

- I've included Faulkner, Henriques and Hastings instead of Stanlake (lol), Agar and Cartwright.
- Hilton Cartwright was the most unlucky omission but the other pair I don't feel like there is any need to justify why there were not included.
- The A tier guys are getting picked every game if fit despite Warner's poor Test overseas record and I think they are our stars and rightfully deserve to earn the most.
- Cummins is obviously a star/star in the making but just hasn't quite had the same results yet so I need to see him perform for a full season before he hopefully makes the leap up.
- The gap between tiers/pay scales aren't that big especially between C and C-.
- Cartwright, Stoinis, Sayers, O'Keefe, Nevill, Lynn and SMarsh were considered.
- I also thought about Siddle a lot, but not for the purpose of this exercise.

Really? No one can see why a young beanpole quick who hoops them away at 90+ is going to be of interest to the selectors as a pick for the future? The guy's rep is already how he scares six shades of **** out of everyone who faces him and he's nowhere near getting it right yet.

Re: Stanlake, in a funny sort of way that he looked so raw, nervous and out of his depth in his ODI/T20 appearances may have helped him get a contract because it encourages admin to treat him as a 'project player' who needs extra care and supervision.

Glad Shaun Marsh missed out on a contract. Had a lot of chances over the years and despite some high points too fragile mentally & physically to continue with at his age.

I'm worried about Cricket Australia trying to take control of his program, citing their success with Cummins...
It's probably too early to say whether it's a success too. What he did in India, it just confirmed what we already knew, that he's a gun. But my God it's taken a long time for him just to feel his body is up to playing FC cricket again and if he falls over again prior to the Ashes...

Yeah, and CA tried to take over his program back after the South African series in 2011. It's not what's happened in the past twelve months that's the issue, it's the five years before that.

Channel 10 & Foxtel combined gives me some hope. It might also provide the best way for expansion, with multiple games on the same day being easier / more attractive for the rights buyers.

The day BBL is fronted by Slats and Heals... :shudder:

Whichever channel wins the rights surely has to insist that the best players are available for home ODI's and T20I's unlike what happened this year. If they could find a way to have them available for BBL too, even better as it would make expansion to 10 teams easier. May mean fewer ODI's and T20I's but who really cares at this point.

T20I's are only worth something to the networks if Warner, Smith etc. are playing and ODI's have lost their lustre even if they still rate well.

T20s are viewed by most here as a league format. A bit of light entertainment between the real cricket (ODIs and tests). The big bash rates well but only because there's nothing else on. I doubt it would get Foxtel many subscribers.

Wrong on all counts I'd wager

I agree with stephen. BBL needs to be on FTA as often as possible, ideally maintaining the one game a night scheduling.

Fox Sports-exclusive games may work if there are more double headers in the schedule, i.e. Fox Sports shows an early game live and exclusive, which leads into a simulcast of the primetime game just like they do with the NRL on Fridays.

The people who are going to get Foxtel for cricket are far more likely to do so for overseas tests than the BBL.

T20 cricket really has no competition on tv when it's on. It doesn't compete against the international matches. It is on during the tv ratings off season. People simply wouldn't watch the bbl if it was on pay tv, they'd either watch nothing or whatever crap was on in the same time slot.

Yeah, it wouldn't be something that lifts up subscription rates. Reportedly gaining AFL only had a minimal effect on Foxtel uptake, let alone a six week cricket tournament.

I think seven of the ten most popular shows in any given year on Fox are NRL matches, which makes sense because it's basically a made-for-tv sport given all the action is concentrated around the pill.
