Australian Off Season 2017

Not surprised Khawaja not in the one-day squad. Ordinary fielder, ordinary runner between wickets means he has to be exceptional when he gets his chances and his ODI record is pretty blah. Even against Pakistan last summer he was fairly underwhelming.

While watching the Windies/Pakistan Test, they put up an interesting graph showing that of all the Test sides since the start of 2016, Australia had the least amount of runs from their 8-11 bats.

It's surprising to see as Australia in the past few decades have prided their tail scrambling runs better than others; even someone like McGrath was involved in a lot of valuable partnerships and hanging around with other bats to help reach their tons.

The standards seem to have slipped a bit in recent times; probably something the team needs to focus on as a whole in this off-season.

He got selected for the ODI team just as he seemed to have lost a bit of form in the format. Which would be frustrating as he was in such incredible form for the previous year and never got a look in to the side.

He would have been one of my first choice ODI players for Australia a year ago but I don't know if he even makes my 11 or even squad now that Head and Lynn have come in and performed and are just awesome in general respectively. Also Henriques in the form he's in now and clearly Maxwell has to play.

It's between him and Finch for the top-order spot for mine and there's not much between them. IIRC Finch has been pretty **** lately as well.

If it came down to the fact that both are horrendously obese and love smacking boundaries on account of not being able to run much, I'd pick Usman any day.

But I can't recall Finch being as miserable a fielder as Khawaja is at his best. Been quite reliable over the years.

I like Khawaja as an ODI batsman, but he had chances and didn't take them. Easy to see why they went back to Finch.

Did you write this in response to a post I made? I swear ive written about Finch and Khawaja but can't see my post.

Gnske lol that really isn't a haircut you could set your watch to.

Pattinson has earned his call up to the odi side but I can't help but wonder if Australia would be better off with him rekking county sides like he is now. Such tip top form. 20@11 in CC this season.

Agar, Cartwright, Stanlake have all received CA contracts while Faulkner, SMarsh, Siddle, Nevill, Henriques, O'Keefe and Stoinis all miss out.

I assume Stanlake is there so they can totally control him, like the years Cummins got a contract

Hastings is another who has missed out. I think you are right Spikey but I don't like it, he shouldn't be making more money over others just for that reason.

Also how did Stoinis make the CT squad, get called up for the Indian tour and is now behind Cartwright in contracts?

yeah Western Australia have got insanely lucky here. I'm not exactly sure where Agar is getting international games over the next year, given he's behind Lyon, Sok and Holland for tests, and they take every opportunity to not play their best OD spinner. Meanwhile, given all the back and forth, how do you decide which two of Cartwright, Marsh, Stonis and Henriques get contracts? Presumably there's no all-rounder written into the test team right now, so that doesn't work in anyone's favour

Seems like Greg Chappell has got his hands on the contact list.

Still I think S Marsh's international career is probably over now. Siddle was an expected casualty given he was only ever a test bowler and there is at least six fast bowlers ahead of him right now even if he was fit. Nevill was an expected cut given the preference for Wade.

Faulkner has been on the outer ever since his drink driving offences. O'Keefe will be lucky to see any more cricket outside of the subcontinent (and Sri Lanka/India are both probably 3-4 years away now).

Stoinis has been awful except for one ODI in which he was Bradman and McGrath all rolled into one. I think he'll be a flash in the pan to be honest.

I'm genuinely surprised at the dropping off Henriques from the list. He seems to be hitting form in all forms of cricket. Wouldn't be surprised to see him become a regular in at least one international side soon.

Cartwright is next in line for the test side now that Khawaja is coming back and the Marsh brothers are gone from that format. He's behind Maxwell but I wouldn't be surprised if he got some international cricket over the next year.

Agar is the truly puzzling one. I haven't seen anything to suggest that his bowling or batting is up to international standards. HOWEVER, this could signal a plan for unleashing the pace quartet next summer. Pick Agar at 7, drop Lyon and play the quartet. I don't like that plan because we lose when we drop Lyon because every side needs an international quality spinner but it wouldn't surprise me.

Hey Mitch Marsh has a contract and so does Arun Finch, so Cartwright might be behind that pair.

Ooh yesssss

Really, really glad about Stanlake.

He really, really, so earned that contract in his dazzling performances this summer. Hard work really does pay off.
