Nah, come on. You've been banging on about Ashwin being the answer for India in the tour thread since the first test, even when there's been impending rain, it's hooping around corners and two spinners in England is rank idiocy.

He's fine for commentary. I would even say he's great to have there. Sure it's good to have knowledgeable and insightful people on there but too many commentators shy away from anything even remotely controversial (eg. Gilchrist, Hussey) and in the end just don't really offer any opinions on anything.

We need more of a regular joe who just comes on and talks **** about the players. Now I'm not saying Mark Waugh is ignorant or anything, I'm sure he has some very good insights, but he's more honest and has less of a filter which I appreciate.
He's kind of like a richer man's Ian Healy. He's a dickhead but can be good value.
I know you guys bemoan the lost generation of Aussie bats who could never get past Ricky Ponting and several Waughs, but who cares, let's discuss the Australian Current XI vs Australian Guy XI. Who wins?

David Warner
Will Pucovski
Marnus Labuschagne
Steve Smith
Matthew Wade
Cameron Green
Tim Paine
Pat Cummins
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazlewood
Nathan Lyon

Chris Rogers
Ed Cowan
Usman Khawaja
Shaun Marsh
Marcus North
Moises Henriques
Graham Manou (I needed a keeper, and Tim Paine is pretending he belongs in the other XI)
Nathan Hauritz
Ben Hilfenhaus
Michael Kasprowicz
Doug Bollinger
Current side and it's not close. Lyon alone would destroy the Guys Batting, much less the quicks.

Yeah, mainly coz I think a 4th seamer, unless he can bat, hardly adds value anyways, unless he provides a point of difference to the other 3. That has not happened so far. I understand Shardul in the first test and Ishant at Lords but Leeds was literally crying out for a second spinner. It was as hot and bright as it could be expected ever in England and the pitch was rather dry.

Even a Aus XI v pretend Aus XI discussion has to have Ashwin in it. This is the sort of posting which led to the Tendulkar vs Mangoes thread years ago, except Tendulkar always got a game for his side.
And what a thread that was

Back to the coaching situation, what do people think about realistic options for when Langer leaves in the middle of next year?

I fells like coaches are a bit thin on the ground these days, at least ones that won't demand an IPL-level salary - it feels like Mickey Arthur has coached everybody over the past decade. Seems to be the consensus that Ponting or Gillespie are unlikely to be enticed, though one can hope. There doesn't seem to be anyone in the setup as a heir apparent like Silverwood for England either (and I wouldn't say he's exactly going well, albeit with less than optimal circumstances).

I've seen some mention Bayliss, though he wasn't spectacular for England and I'm not keen on the more white-ball focus that he seems to be tagged with. Anyone got any opinions on Andrew McDonald, who seems to have been around a lot recently? And any other more out there options?

I'll do it.

I'll have to move a couple of other things I've got on the go, but I should be right for a Tuesday and Thursday arvo session during daylight saving, provided a couple of blokes can get there early to take the covers off and set up the nets.

From what I have seen, McSweeney, Davies & Konstas are the pick of the young batsmen

Selectors obviously rate Inglis but he’s a 5/6

Return of Green is very important as he can slot in at 4

Hardie is a good cricketer IMO while Webster is performing so all rounder spot is covered

There’s plenty of bowlers IF they can stay fit

Not all gloom and doom but there’s the chance that Uzi, Marnus, Smith and MItch are all on the way out and that leaves a massive hole

Definitely concerns over the batting but it is way too early in this series to sound the doom klaxon. We all know how hard Aus are to beat at home and it’s very possible they will come back stronger. Even this game isn’t over yet, you never know.

It's over now bruh

It wouldn't surprise me if Australia endure a period like the 80s from here on in

Because there's no point. Everyone knows Labuschagne should be dropped but he won't be.

Averaging only 23 over 12 months is bad enough but to see an Aussie #3 struggle to get 2 runs off 52 balls is unheard of. Sack him immediately.

He made a match winning 92 on a difficult pitch about 3 innings ago tbh

So what, Dean Jones made 100* in his 3rd last innings. Have you seen Labuschagne's last 10 innings:

3, 2, 6, 90, 2, 1, 5, 3, 1*, 10
